View Full Version : The Picture On The Cover Reeled Me In...But The Movie Sucked

I know there are TONS of movies like this...Has anyone else been taken in by some really cool cover art, thinking it's gonna be a pretty good movie, then found out the cover on the case was WAY better than anything actually IN the movie?
Dead Birds is the first one that comes to mind for me....I mean I guess it wasn't TOO bad...But, I was expecting so much more...
Also..What about understated cover art...The movie was so much better than you thought it would be, and it should have had a much better picture on the cover to get the attention it deserves?
Saw...

tons of modern horrors, like, almost all of them.
Deep Blue Sea has one of my favorite covers, but i think that was a decent movie.

Side FX is another bad movie with a cool cover

I agree. I think the cover for what lies beneath was cool, just cause it was so plain, but it sucked.

Unfortunatley...Both the 'workout' image, and the actual title of the film...Made me think of Richard Simmons...*cringes*

Never Say Goodbye
I was at a video store and saw the case that had a couple names on it that I don't remember and Clint Eastwood. Without thinking twice I picked it up. I watched it later that day and found out that Clint was only in one scene. So I look it up on the internet and he wasn't even credited, they just stuck his name on the box for marketing.

DEAD BIRDS...that was a super cool cover and the poster really got me. What a piece of crap! That movie had the most illogical plot, bad dialogue and dumbest characters I've ever had the displeasure to view.......the main character should have stuck to being buddies with E.T. his acting "chops" just aren't that skilled in adulthood.

absolutely nothing ..
i would never buy a movie based on the cover - i'd have to know something about it or go by the star/s/filmmaker
there are movies i wouldnt consider based on the cover.
i can always tell a piece of shit by how much work went into it (there is an air of desperation about it) and what pictures they chose to put on the cover.
the worse the movie - the more skin they try to show.

dead birds is a nice addition to the low budget horror family.
it's far better than the cover would lead you to believe.
good acting, funky story, decent effects....
i believe this one is a forum favorite.

That's exactly what I did and got screwed. Overall I paid 6 bucks for an ok movie but it was still very disappointing.

that happens .... but then - as far as the thread is concerned ... you wernt sucked in by the cover in the 1st place...
thats a different topic - and one where i have also been reeled in a couple of times .. (on the rep of the filmmaker/star, etc) and it ended up being a piece of shit.

What about Indie films?...Movies by people just starting out?
I'll give almost anything that's considered 'horror' at least a chance...
I didn't know anything about The Shaft either, and it wasn't exactly an 'excellent' movie...But, I was glad that I bought it...It was kinda fun...
Also...I HAVE bought some movies that I DID know something about the people involved...But, that didn't keep them from being bad...
EDIT: What I'm really trying to say here is...If I DON'T know something about a movie...Sometimes the picture on the cover is ALL that I have to go by.....Sometimes I luck out...But, sometimes I get screwed...

I do that sometimes, but I still have to see for myself, no matter what.......If I paid attention to most of the people here, I would have never watched Spawn....And I like it....Not everyone likes the same things...'Good' and 'bad' are a matter of perception (Just like you don't mind sex in horror movies, but I would rather have more 'horror' instead of sex scenes, etcetera)...
And...Even though I believed everyone here (and they were right) about House Of The Dead, I still had to watch it...And...I'm glad I did:p...There were actually a few good scenes (mostly near the end, when they were in that house...The ripping apart scenes...the leg thing...you know)
I thought The Village was majorly disappointing...But, I'm still glad that I watched it, otherwise, I'd always wonder about it...

i still see things for myself .. but it gives me that chance to benchmark it against what certain other people say - based on their likes.
but this is deviating from the origional questions. your examples just now werent movies you got sucked into because of the cover..

I let the cover catch my eye... and then try to read the synopsis on the back, at which time it has to pass the "do my eyes glaze over before finishing the first sentence" test. Many fail.... I may have missed a few gems with such impatience, who knows....
