I'd really like to hear some of your opinions on when life begins but here's the thing: Everytime I see this discussion it gets poluted with religion, opinions on abortion and woman's rights, and even even when an abortion should be done. I don't want to know any of that, I've heard it all before, what I really want are some opinions on when a baby is alive. I personally think it's when the body begins to form and take shape. Early I know, but that's what I think.

When the sperm becomes animated/created...whatever...
I mean, sure...it's only a component of the complete recipe, but it moves right? whatever inbuilt instinct leads it to do that means that in some way it IS alive.
It seems like the egg thing is the dormant recpticle, more like an internal organ than life itself...the sperm seems to be the thing that really jump starts the process...so I'll go with that.

Oh...As for my answer......When the zygote fertilizes the egg, the cells begin to divide and multiply, doing what they are programmed to do in order to form a human being...This process only takes place with LIVING cells...A heartbeat is a pretty good indication that a creature is alive also...
We have had this debate here many times before...
On a side note...Did you know that it is legal to abort a human fetus, but VERY illegal to even ATTEMPT to abort an animal fetus?
Did you know that statistically the majority of animal rights activists are PRO (human) abortion?
Did you know that a HUGE majority of people who are AGAINST the death penalty...are FOR abortion?
I just find those things to be quite interesting...As well as odd...
And for those of you who will say "But, the majority of people who are against abortion are FOR the death penalty" (which is 100% true), and find that to be incongruent...Let me explain it to you this way...
There is a pretty big difference between killing an innocent, unborn child...And punishing (killing) a convicted murderer, who btw, has to be convicted of at least one other crime besides just murder in order to even be CONSIDERED for the death penalty...Such as, committing more than one murder, or rape and murder, or robbery and murder...Etcetera...

I've seen this discussion before but like I said it often gets mucked up with related issues. I guess I agree with BR, as soon as the egg is fertilized there's life.

As a gal who's been pregnant and felt the life... I'd have to say at the moment of conception. That's just me. I'm still pro-choice. I don't believe that I have the power to dictate someone else's life. And no, I can't wrap my head around the inconsistiancy there.
It's like the death penalty... I don't know where I stand. I can argue both sides extremely well. However, that doesn't make me feel me sure enough to make a decision.

I agree with this, when it can survive outside the womb (about 26 weeks?). Anything before that isnt life, just the potential for life.

At the moment of conception but let me be very clear. I'am prochoice & prodeath penalty. The reasons for this have nothing to do with God. People are the ones with the responsiblity to another's life (children).
As for the death penalty there are some people in this world who don't need to be walking around in it. Anyhow thats my slant on this subject.

That's a good way of stating it, SK. I think my opinion falls somewhere around there.

Em not too sure where you want us to go
on this..or understand the question..
Do you wanna know how to make a baby ??
So em not sure how to answer.
That couldn't be the most beautiful feeling ever..when your baby plays havoc in your womb..but admittedly..when it comes to comparing pain..nothing can out do..giving birth..lol.
Just knowing that your responsible for a new life is somewhat overpowering..
No shit...but when my 1st was born..
I was waiting for the manual..i even hounded my midwife.

I didn't want it to go anywhere I just wanted some opinions without all the debating and arguing. Not very exciting I know. I was wondering mostly because I started to think about life as in terms of baking (weird I know). I was thinking, if you want a cake so you start to make it and then you don't want it you just stop making it but if it's in the oven already and then you decide you don't want it you don't just take it out halfway and toss it you wait for it to finish baking because maybe you'll want it later. If you don't want it later somebody else will because everybody likes cake right? When is a cake a cake? Is it when the ingredients are mixed or when it comes out of the oven... maybe it's somewhere inbetween. This isn't a statement about abortion although I am pro-life... it's just a weird thought about baking. Good thing the two weren't combined though because fetus cake doesn't sound good.

my stance on death penalty:
In principle, I'm for it. Some guy kills 12 people, sure, let 'im fry. However, the system sucks. Just watch either of the Paradise Lost movies. So I'm against it only because of the system that determines who gets put to death

Isn't that just a case of horses-for-courses?
As for the death-penalty, why not save everyone a whole lot of time and money by aborting all the murderers, rapists etc. before they have a chance to leave the womb?

'life' begins when the cells start to divide but i am pro-choice too and also believe that the soul only enters the phoetus after the 5th month.

Uh... There's a flaw with your statement. How are you going to predetermine who is or is not going to turn out to be a psychopath? That's not something you're given to know about your own child while it's still in the womb. It's usually in the developemental stages that you recognize those tendencies.

Ever see the movie "Minority Report"? Kind of the same concept except that they aren't aborted before they're born, they are just killed before they commit their crimes.
