Early Cronenberg Faeces would have been funnier.

Stereo is impenetrable tosh, and rather like a medical research film - but perhaps in tune with the "experimental" types in 1969.

Damned hippies.

What are his best films?

I though eXistenZ was crap and Scanners was worth a watch but not great.. What about the others?

both of those are great.

so are Shivers (aka They Came From Within), Rabid, videodrome, and The Brood

You liked eXistenZ? Wowzer... I thought the plot was alright but could have gone alot further. The lead female pissed me off with her acting skills and how she was so attached to her "pod". The "games" were alright but could have been done 1000 times better.

Scanners was alright.. The end scene was crazy, I enjoyed that alot. And of course the exploding head. It was hard to decide whether I wanted to own it or not, but I chose not.

Cronenberg's best films (in my opinion, at least) are Crash, Dead Ringers, and Spider. Videodrome is good too, but I don't think it's as good as the first three I mentioned.

Yeah and The Dead Zone, The Fly, History of Violence, The Brood... and I'm looking forward to London Fields too. I guess I'm just a mark for Cronenberg. Haven't seen one of his films I haven't liked yet.

those are more mature efforts but they'll never be among my favorites.

I discoverd his films early on (Shivers being the 1st)
and i love those early efforts.

side note .. there is a Canadian TV show where he guest appeared ... it is a show about a fictitional TV station and he was slated to be a guest....
All through the show all of the staff kept asking him about the exploding head in Scanners and he kept telling them how he'd rather not dwell on the earlier films as he's gone far beyond that artistically now.
This kept happening until later on in the show there's a quick cut to him talking to some young beautiful blonde with big tits - and he's happily describing the details of the head blowing up in Scanners with her ..

one of the funniest things i've ever seen on TV...I thought that was pretty cool of him to do .. he's certainly got a healthy sense of humor ..

i've never been a huge cronenberg fan - liked Dead Zone and Scanners, but not really into Shivers and thought Spider was painful. . .. BUT I thought History of Violence was amazing and a brilliant example of filmmaking - i'm just sad it got pushed out of the major oscar categories - I do hope it wins adaptation (though I think Brokeback is a lock on that category)
