Saw And Se7en

Anyone else notice the similarities?


I really like Se7en AND the Saw movies....BUT...It kinda makes me wonder if there really ARE any completely new ideas out there....Have we truly already seen all that there is to see?

Of course there are new ideas, they're just not marketable.

Oh, and I thought Saw and Se7ven were different enough to give me two unique experiences despite the similarities.

Saw is not unlike any other post-Se7en thriller/horror in which the serial killer comes up with some overly complicated method of killing people. I think Se7en's impact on its subgenre has been greatly underplayed. It was definately on a smaller scale, but it had a similar impact that Halloween, Scream, and Ringu had on their respective subgenres. A lot of movies tried to mimic their success, but most of them either totally missed what made them so great (Halloween's masterful building of suspense and lack of using gore as a crutch, Scream's self-aware nature and wit, Ringu's ingenious structure and a twist that doesn't come out of the blue, Se7en's awe-inspiring direction and intelligence), or just couldn't quite make it work in the same way. There've been a lot of Se7en ripoffs, several of which starred Morgan Freeman, Saw is no different (except it doesn't have Morgan Freeman in it)

Kiss The Girls and Along Came A Spider were watchable imo but missed Se7en by a looooooooooonnnnnng shot.



I agree with Sam's comments, it's just another one of a bunch of rip offs trying to cash in like the mile long line of slashers that came in the 80s after Halloween. Saw has been better than most attempts and it leans more toward horror than crime which makes it stand out more.

Obviously we can hold blatant "rip-offs" accountable but shouldn't we judge each movie based on it's own merrit? Saw wasn't Se7en, Saw 2 wasn't Cube, and despite similarities between movies what if (and I'm not saying this happened) the writters are simply unaware of another similar script? I'm sure some of the ideas floating around in my head are in somebody else's somewhere. How do you decide if it's borrowing too heavily and how do you even know if another film is an influence? I try to watch movies and judge them without citing any other movies although it's difficult. Sometimes it doesn't matter if somebody brings something new to the table as what they bring is damn good. It gets hard sometime though, watching High Tension as a Dean Koontz (and Intensity) fan had me second guessing the creativity of the writers from the very beginning. For me I suppose it just depends on the overall quality of the movie. To use my food metaphor again, sometimes preparing the same dish with a few different or extra ingredients changes the flavor completely.

The only thing I know is that I really didn't like Saw much at all, I thought the acting was terrible and the "twist" was so outlandish and unbeleivable that it just ripped the whole movie apart for me...

Now Seven...That was one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time...I thought the acting really helped the movie soar into a great movie...And That "Twist" was actual plausable...;) :D
