Alright, so I have a TON of DVDs and soon we'll see the blu-ray and hddvd formats. When dvd came out I rplaced most of my VHS with DVDs because of how long they'll last but since I take exceptional care of my DVDs they'll last pretty much as long as I will. Anyway, will you replace you dvds with the new format or no? Did you replace your VHS tapes? Just curious because I don't think I will. I know they'll hold like twenty times the data but with all the extras I can't see what they'll add that I'll actually be interested in and with upconvert dvd players I'm fine with my current DVD resolutions on my HDTV. Another bummer is packaging will probably suffer because TV Seasons will only be one or two discs and look like normal DVD cases which IMO is kind of boring. Just looking for opinions.

I didn't replace any of my VHS's and won't replace my DVD's. By the way, what's with having new formats? Just stick with what we've got! I don't feel like changing again!

Well the new ones will have tons more space and higher resolutions. That way when Dolby 12.2 comes around there will be space for the audio.

Yeah, I just like the movies, only reason I replaced VHS is because they get old and stretched out and they all got pretty crappy on me.

VHS is more reliable but it takes more care and you need decent equipment.

the players should be backwards compatable, so there won't be much need for replacing all of them

I bought dvd versions of the VHS I had but never just tossed out the VHS. I might get the new stuff but I'll never just completely replace the old.

I only started collecting movies around the time DVDs starting coming out. I replaced all of my VHS, but there were only about 15. I'll probably buy a BluRay player (especially since they're backwards compatible) but I doubt very much I'll replace any of my collection. I will probably start buying just BluRays after that, though.

So long as the machines really are backward compatible, there's no chance in hell Im replacing this collection.

I wonder if they will stop making DVD's like they have basically stopped making VHS.

I have a huge collection of both, and there is no way in hell I could afford to replace anything. I will still be watching my VHS when IM 90!

they haven't stopped with vhs, mainstream stuff can still be picked up new on vhs...how long for though, I wouldn't know. Even though some stores don't stock vhs anymore.

Also I doubt they'd drop dvd's once the 'format war' between hd and blu-ray has been decided, for quite some time. The current dvd format is still far to popular. The average viewer won't want to fork out more for new gear to play the next format, as they'll be happy with dvd quality pq and sound. It'll be the the hardware enthusiasts who'll take up most of the sales in new players. Give it a couple of years or more, after the new formats decided and released, before you see the average home user replacing hardware.
