In your opinion, what genre of music fits horror movies the best?
I think that industrial music (Front Line Assembly, KMFDM) for anime. Punk (Misfits, Terror) for mainstream horror. Grindcore/Metal (Napalm Death, Cradle of Filth) for gory horror films. Goth (Sisters of Mercy) for psychological thrillers (things about ghosts etc.).
Any other opinions?

I actually think goth sounding music w/ alot of piano is great for horror movies.

Hmm...Let me think...
Crappy, sappy music for crappy, sappy movies
Wicked, kickass music for wicked, kickass movies
That's the best I can do right now...*has a massive headache...can't think too hard*...:)

i think there was a thread like this before...
i think the minute you start using the same type of music for the same type of film - you're fucked.
its the same mistake all the hacks make..
when the music plays against type its more unnerving and offsetting ..
light classical music while horrific events are taking place onscreen is a jarring contrast that can work.
even then music should enhance - not distract.

Hard Rock a.k.a. Metal for the slashers.

For creepy movies I like orchestrated themes and then random sound like some piano here and there and then a little percussion slamming in there and quickly dissapearing. Most of Carpenter's stuff worked well with his movies. Zombie put together a good soundtrack for Devil's Rejects too. For though most part though I like original scores and not liscensed stuff. Oh, in Fallen when they're singing Time is on My Side and it's going from person to person, I LOVED that. Hmmm what else. Falling to Pieces in Phantoms was well used too.

Any genre works, the trick is finding a piece of music that hightens the scene, something that you don't really notice until its not there anymore. Kinda like a good rhythm bass line.

Heavy guitar riffs work well on modern slasher movies, but then again they can make them a bit corny and change the mood from horror to action.
I prefere classical/instrumental pieces, they seem to work with all kinds of horror. Except for the comedy/horror movies, but I don't like those anyway.

I think an orchestral/symphonic score almost always works best. Except for anime, which in my opinion, goes better with electronica or J-pop.
