Before I get innundated with links to previous threads where this has been asked already, I'll be up front: I don't have time to search. I know you lot like a debate or an evolving list, so here's one:

I have a fairly reasonable collection of films, collected mainly by accident over the years:

I Spit on Your Grave
Last House on the Left
Cannibal Ferox
Cannibal Holocaust
Anthropophagus
Wu Shu (Run & Kill)
Men Behind the Sun (waiting for delivery)
Driller Killer
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Story of Ricky
Salo
Irreversible
Baise Moi

There's a few which I know I want and which I'm looking for on Ebay:

The Burning Moon
Paura nella cittą dei morti viventi (City of the Living Dead; Lucio Fulci)
Za ginipiggu / Guineapig series

As you can probably see, I'm trying to collect "controversial" / "notorious" films. Italian horror and Hong Kong Category III seem to be the ones to seek but I'm open to suggestion.

The purpose of this thread then is to harvest the titles that I might want to look for.

Recommendations duly invited and gratefully received...

Thriller: A Cruel Picture (aka They Call Her One Eye) was pretty controversial for the violence and hardcore porn scenes. Not a bad movie but not the greatest by any means. I own this one.

I think Caligula was another one I don't see mentioned that garnered a lot of guff. I didn't like the film personally but others think it's a classic.

Based on what you have I would suggest you get Thriller but make sure to get the uncut version because the other is hacked up horribly. Only controversial Swedish movie I think I've seen. http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=RYK030349

By the way, I've heard Mother's Day is pretty bad but haven't seen it. Been meaning to check it out. Freaks was pretty good too but it's old and some people just don't like older controversial films because they don't pack the same punch now as they did.

You need to get yourself a copy of Maniac and The Beyond.

no, ignore any reccomendations of The Beyond, that movie was terrible. There are plenty of good Italian horror movies with scenes similar to the ones in The Beyond, but done a lot better (like the eye gouge scene) that you don't need to see that piece of shit movie

Whatever the Beyond is a fuckin' amazing film.

Stuart Gordon's From Beyond and Fulci's Zombi 2 were both better than The Beyond (Fulci did Zombi 2 a few years before The Beyond and it was still a better flick). I didn't hate The Beyond, it just wasn't as good as a few others I've seen.

"Night Of The Demon"? What is that one about? That's not the lame ass movie, albeit with a tad of violence, about some Yeti, who in the end, just wanted his kid back?

As in Zombie/Zombe Flesh Eaters?

I thought the Beyond was way better than Zombie. Zombie was cool but kinda dull in places.

Men behind the sun is pretty grim if thats what your after. was'nt impressed by the Guinea pig series the gore effects are pahetic. you did'nt mention what region dvds your getting. the first four films on your list have been butchered if you've got the region 2 dvds.

Dr Satan,

Most of my collection is on VHS and as far as I've been able to ascertain, they're pretty much the fullest versions available.

Having only recently crawled into the 21st century and acquired a DVD player, I'm not looking to build a DVD collection. The DVD player is multi-region so any advice on which regions to buy in future will always be appreciated.

from what I've seen is :

a lot of stuff in the UK is cut

a lot of north american stuff isnt - depending on the version. (anchor bay and blue underground pride themselves on having uncut releases ... i think Synapse is good too for that)

from what Shanks says - asian - especially korean - have some really nice unioque releases .. cool packaging ...nice box sets ..etc.

i think for a complete collection you need to look all over the world and research the individual releases .. no easy answer for that one :)

Of course you could never call your collection particularly notorious or even slightly controversial if we're talking UK releases.

Although some recent re-releases may have been re-instated with previously cut gore or sleaze, you really need a Customs-defying uncut New York Ripper, Nekromantik or August Underground on your shelves to have a truly big cock.

Oh, and there are two kinds of people in this world my friend.... those who get The Beyond, and those who dig....

You dig?

;)

Combining jive with The Good The Bad and The Ugly could quite possibly become the way forward for all of us.

Say, The Beyond has great music.

And pipe-cleaner spiders!

its funny but when i watched the film .. i remember the music (in context) feeling inappropriate. It was one of my initial impressions.

I have a friend who scores film (the same guy who scored Stink of Flesh) and he loves the music.
He also has Ebion tatooed on his neck .. we have colourful discussions about the film as you might guess :)

the spiders ... jesus ... at that point i just about lost it.

i have a very clear image in my head of the footage they had to edit out - of the one or 2 real spiders passing the fake ones - stopping and staring at them with a 'what the fuck?' look on their little spider faces.

the same kind of look i guess i had on my face throughtout the whole film :)

some day i'll write a point form list of all the things that drove me nuts ..

one or 2 of them i could live with - but all in one movie was intolerable (for me)

i mentioned it before but the one that started the ball rolling was the opening sequence where these lads were stealthily cruising up the bayou in a sneak attack on the house .. while the rest of their buddies roared up in a motor car ...

i was going 'what the fuck' in the 1st 3 minutes of the film :D

I collect the UNCUT versions of conterversial movies as well. I have most of what was mentioned above. I'm especially happy with my copy of the 25th anniversary collectors edition of Cannibal Holocaust!

A few others to add to your wish list, Uncut only, are:

Entrails of a Beautiful Woman (Asian)
Bad Taste
Braindead/ aka Dead Alive
The Ugly
Street Trash
Sacred Flesh
Flesh for the Beast
Ichi The Killer
City of the Living Dead/ aka Gates of hell

There are many conterversial films out there. Pick up a book called "Beyond Horror Holocaust" by Chas. Balun. It will give you a good start and alot of insight on the what and why of conterversial horror films.

There's nothing else quite like Island of Death (uncut obviously, not the UK version) - the film really revels in its nastiness, and there is some nicely unsettling cinematography through the narrow streets of the Greek island.
