View Full Version : Freedom on the internet soon to be gone

Here is a chilling account of internet oppersion as published in an edition of (The London Independent) by author Daniel Howden.

"...China remains the benchmark in censorship. Bejing hs cajoled major U.S. playes such as Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo inot adapting their sites and services to suit the censors. A Chinese Web surfer typing the words 'democracy' or 'freedom' or 'humna rights' into their server will probaably recieve an error message announcing: ' This item contains forbidden speech."'

Some of you may sit around and laugh at this saying tha scenario can never occur here in America, here are some more headlines: "China again tightens control of online news and information..." or "China shuts down 47,000 'harmful' internet cafes." Or "China charges U.S. monopolizes the internet, seelks globalb control" and "EU wants shared control of internet."

Global internet control. What we are actually talking about is "Global control" They are the same thing.

The United Nations is looking to become the internet police "...to ensure a fair sharing of the internet for the benefit of the whole world."

I have never seen the U.N. do anything that benefits anyone but themselves. The internet was invented by the U.S. and noone needs to be in control of it but us.

That being said, our own federal government has now been asking for records from "Google and Yahoo" as well as others to see what U.S. citizens are searching for on the internet. This is all been done under the guise of national security and "its for the children" .

Why does the world government care what I look at??? Porn, horror, gun websites, political thinktanks and so on. Its my business, I am not hurting anyone.

What we can all do and this means "EVERYONE" is write and call our represenatives in government and tell them we do not want any government telling us what we can and cannot do in the privacy of our own homes.

Then we need to send a message to businesses like Yahoo and tell them we do not appreciate them giving information about us to the federal government.

By the way, when Google was asked to turn over this information they told the US govt. to "stick it" Kudos to them.

Sorry for the length but I think this is kind of important.

Holy crow that's a scary picture isn't it? I hate how they're using the tags of "Homeland Security" and "Child Protection." So the UN is thinking about controling the Internet?

Creeper, for you and I, do you see a rising storm? Can you imagine witchvox.com being shut down for political reasons? Stores not being able to sell occult goodies online because "of the children?"

OUR little nitch of the universe here at hdc being erased because we talk about horror movies which are "innapropriate for the children???"

Unfortunately, NC's reps are the kind of people who would push for this type of legislation.

This truly bothers me.
So slowly and for our"best interest" we are having our rights trampled on but since no one has a clue(including me) how to fight this...what's the option??
We can't rely on our government for anything these days and god forbid you actually go out into the private sector and try to make a difference-the apathy is astonishing.

One day we look back at this time as"when freedom started it's death rattle".

I will do what you suggested MTC but I truly think it will reach deaf ears.
And I am glad Google stood up but it is only a matter of time IMO that they find a loophole and go in and do exactly what they want anyway.

Agreed. I think we are dancing precariously on the edge of a razor and life in this country could go either way. We were forced underground once before and survived, we can do it again. Not that I would want to. I am pround of what and who I am.

I believe that there is no difference between politcians, Republicrat or Democan its all about the money and keeping themselves in power.

I know alot of us feel like there is nothing that we can do but someone once said, "It only takes one voice to start a revolution."

Pat Robertson IS what is wrong with America today.

He can say whatever the hell he likes, but the problem is so many agree with him.

ANd then he cant even back up what he says. If you really believe that then at least stand up for it, not back down when you get some heat.

I saw it. What I also see is alot of folks who dont see it and or dont care.

3 types of people in the world.

Those who make things happen.

Those who watch things happen.

And those who wonder what just happened.

I dont want to sit around and watch E! television, I like my freedoms thank you.

Well China is a Communist country. It's no secret that it's run by an oppressive regime. As for it happening in America, our government has already said they aren't going to give up control over the internet. They aren't gonna do it. And what's the UN gonna do about it? Ha... Nothing they can do.

As for our gov't requests for search info from google, yahoo, and msn... Google told 'em to fuck off and Yahoo and MSN gave them general search data but no personal information whatsoever. Basically the gov't can see what has come up when people have searched certain words, but they cant see who ran the search to begin with. They are doing it in an effort to see how often porn comes up when the average user runs a general search in an effort to make more difficult for kids to access.

I agree with STE, since when has the Bush administration given a rats ass what the UN thinks. They dont.

But that does not mean that the next administration is going to not be UN friendly. A guy like Kerry would have fallen in line with whatever the UN wanted.

Lets not forget that the European Union is pushing for shared control of the internet also.

I was just using China as an extreme example, but understand that all governments are happiest when their subjects are ignorant and kept in the dark.

Look at all the things that go on in the US today, do you honestly think that this administration wouldnt be violating even more civil liberties if the mass media didnt call them on it????

Do you have a problem standing in line for 4 hours at the airport while they strip search 75 year old ladies?? Do you think its OK for the police to go thru your backpack when you are walking down the street at any given moment?? Do you think its OK for the police department to set up roadblocks and check every single person that drives through the area???

Sory I thought that this was America, and I shouldnt have to stand for that SHIT!!!!

I believe what is going is a slow process of chipping away at our rights, incrementally bit by bit. We are all going to sit back and watch becauses "its for the children" and who is against that.

I am all for security but I am not willing to give up one ounce of my freedoms for it. If I want to look at chicks with dicks doing donkeys while making homemade pipebombs and reading "the Turner Diaries and Mein Kaumpf" thats my business.

So that whole freedom of speech thing, we should just throw that out the window right now huh.

The federal gummit should not have the right to dictate what I can and cannot do in the privacy of my own home.

Next you are going to tell me that written material should be regulated.

I dont think that children should be allowed to view porno on the internet, but if an adult wants to thats their business.

There you have it - personal affairs in the privacy of your own home are one thing.

But if your habits are accessible by the public, through the internet, it can and will be governed.

the sad fact is.......they most liekly will get away with whatever they decide to do. Think about it. Most of america gets it's news from the tv, alot from the Daily Show ( I'm not knocing it, it's a great show, just not to be taken seriously.) Also most of america doesn't care about anything political, unless someone is on life support or about to have an abortion. We're lucky that we get the turnout we do at the polls for the presidental election every four years. The majority of the populace is perfectly happy to sit in front of the tv and listen to whatever the reporters and newscasters tell them.

Yes, the internet has brought on a new wave in free speach, and political discussions, but this is still in the minority as far as people actually utilizing the net for these features. People are sheep, they will be led.

As far as the UN is concerned, can you give me one good reason why we should ever be worried about what they think? Who makes up most of the UN's troops when they mobilize? That'd be the US. The UN may have been a good idea back in the day, but it's nothing to get excited about now. As a matter of fact, this whole nation of the free thing was a kick ass idea back in the day, but we're slowly losing it now.

This isn't the only aread where the people are being fucked. In the past few years, there have been several bills regarding use of electronic devices. I even saw one that could ban every vcr, video camera, digital camera, cd or dvd burner, it was fuckin psycho. But the big companies want to protect their profits, no matter what the average person has to lose.

The patriot act isn't really the problem. At it's current stage, it's only a gateway to worse happening in the future. It's not the search for terrorists that bothers me, it's the very real fact that anyone with an unpopular belief can and will be labeled a terrorist. Think about it, the US government did it to political protesters a few decades ago. Flash forward a few decades and they have alot more resources to throw at anyone unpopular in their eyes.

I've written a few emails and letters, and I'm gonna continue to write as much as I have to to get my voice heard on this issue. If my freedom is gonna go down, I'm gonna go screaming bloody murder with an axe in my hand.

Am not really sure how all that is going to play out. I am looking for the next terrorist attack to happen and then more restrictions against us.

Of course, 30% of the population of this state lives in Sioux Falls alone. All we have going for us is wide open space. Hell, the government is even going to close down our only military base.

I'm currently sitting at work, writing emails to the governor, and other representatives of SD. I'm not hoping for much of a response, but I'm gonna get my word on these issues out there.

It is very good this was posted, the more people that realize how many personal rights are being ripped away from us these days without many of us even being aware the better. This is frightening, but not surprising in the least. I understand the need for certain security measures, but it is getting scary, and a bit absurd.

While the debate about influence by violent fiction remains unsettled, there is increasing suggestion that inspiration from violent news-media has and is contributing to crime and copycat acts.

If Rambo did not contribute to Michael Ryan's 1987 massacre of Hungerford (UK), did the reports and sensationalism spark Martin Bryant's rampage in Tasmania a decade later?
