Man's Headache Turns Out To Be Bullet In Brain

Florida - A man in Volusia County woke up Thursday and found his head bleeding, drove to work and left a note for his boss before going to the hospital and finding out he had a bullet lodged in his brain.

When Glen Thomas Betterley, 53, noticed blood trickling from his head Thursday morning he asked his girlfriend if she had struck him. Emma Lorene Larsen, 65, said no.

"I just woke up and was ready to go to work," Betterley said. "I felt like a headache going on and it was still dark in the room. When I got to the end of the bed, I just felt my forehead and I was like, 'What is this?'"

Betterley cleaned up his blood and went to work.

During the day, Betterley wrote his employer that he could not stay at work and was going to the hospital for treatment.

When he arrived, X-rays showed Betterley had a bullet lodged in his skull.

Officers called his girlfriend at her Orange Avenue home and during the phone conversation they head a single gunshot from inside the house.

Officers forced entry into the home and found Larsen with a gunshot wound to the head.

She died of her injuries.

Authorities believe Larsen committed suicide after failing to kill Betterley.

Betterley said he and Larsen had a great relationship and did not have any problems.

"She told me she loved me and all of that," Betterley said.

Betterley said he is a light sleeper and was surprised he did not hear a gun shot or feel the bullet go into his head.

The two planned to get married in 2006.
