View Full Version : Scaring Newbs

This is kinda a dumb topic. But I was wondering If you all thought that we scare all are newbs away. I mean alot of people spend the time to sign up, Post about 10-15 times then never post again. I dont think Newbs even get made fun of nearly as bad as they used too. But does anyone here think that we could have more members if we were more accepting? Some people just dont know how to take a joke.

I don't remember much of a hard time... maybe the ones who leave just get po'd when they post here to find the name of the movie and get "The Gate". Hell, I came here just to look for the name of a movie for a friend and then got sucked in.

it depends..
what i take offense to ..is a nOob coming to a new thread and 'BAM'..introduce themselves and post attitude..
Wu was a good example..and Pagan..
and that Jesus dude.
The thing is..if they can dish it..
they should be able to take it..3 folds.
Of course if you get bitten..your going to bite back...get my meaning.
Since being here ..I have seen nothing but
new members advertise thier sites/homepages/pick fights/troll the threads etc.
Those who left ..couldnt handle being in adult company..
those of us that stayed ..
stayed for the sake of keeping you morons in line..
:D and showing you what real posting is all about..'tee hee'

just kidding ppl..sheesh..!!

I guess I am still a semi-newb, but when I first came in I had a little run-in with Cheeba and that was over before it began, since then it has been smooth. I think at first I didnt understand the amount of sarcasm that flows around here. I dont tend to get involved in any of the banter around here much anyhow, but it is fun to read sometimes. Give the newbs hell if they are worthy they will get through it if not it wasnt meant to be.

Anyway, yeah these newbs need to be taught a lesson. I know it's against the rules, but a lot (but not all) of these newbs need to be straightened out the hard way! I mean, why should we give them a break so we can have more members when they don't even post anyway?

My only problem was joining under my usual "DarthVonPokemon" monicker at the time "DarthBane" was being constantly banned for practicing Assholism on a regular basis. After it was determined I wasn't him, I had no problems (until the 'Got Beef ? Bring It, MF !' war, which is why HDC is only place on net I'm no longer registered as DVP).

Coming to the HDC forums and making the first post was actually rather frightening for me, not so much because regulars might start bashing me than the feeling of stepping into a room where everybody is gathered in their own groups and are already familiar with one another.

As much as I have noticed that many people get bashed because of their posts, there is another reason that I can think of, which may contribute to people leaving as quickly as they come.

When replying to posts, I've noticed people starting up conversations that are only ever understood by those in the know. Those who've been around here awhile. Those who know the "secret handshake," as it were.

I think this can easily alienate others, and make them feel unwelcome. Like outsiders. While some might take that as a challenge to initiate the interaction of getting to know old members better, others may simply make up their minds to leave.

Just a thought.

PR3SSUR3
12-25-2005, 06:34 AM
I really don't see the problem, and how is one "bashed" on the internet? If we're talking about members of cliques (you know who you are, suckers!) where one post might follow another to the tune of familiar agreement and clever/snide words about a new user... why, you can have hours of fun turning this on its head and poking these sad creatures with sticks!

My advice is to remember we're all the same geeks and nerds hiding behind computer screens, so if you spot a status quo then subvert it - why sign up to something open and allow other users to create their own equilibrium?

Characters on a flashing monitor can't hurt you.

See ..and thats it right there..
We are all individuals..who have the same passion in horror movies.
There is no secret club or group..in fact
the regs spend most of the time arguing amongst themselves..damn the gloves have come off a few times in here..but ..!!once all the cuss words are said and the thread has lost its thrill..people move on.
Alot of new members just jump in and join the conversation..and just make themselves part of the forum.
In fact ..when they do that..we dont even notice that thier post count is only 2 or 3 :D .
Other new members just walk in..post up links to their 'web sites' then leave..
OTHER new members sign up..
abuse crap out of everybody..
makes out they are mightier than thou..
thats when we all bond together.
As for feelings...who gives a crap..
if the new member is a trouble maker..and yes we have had a few..
then the rest of the HDC forum whores are going to tell them to FUCK OFF ..!!

ItsAlive75

Nah, we have our cliques... no way around it, ya make friends here and show it within the threads. But that's why if you're new you have to try and make some friends... otherwise you're a lil' bit out on your ass.

How do you define one?

Thinking about my earlier post, I do have to state that most of the bashing (or flaming?) in threads is usually aimed at people who merely post in order to rant about hating horror movies, whatever the titles happen to be, without any additional input.

You're right, It'sAlive75. Newbies bear the heavier load of making the intiative to interact in the threads, so regulars have a chance to get to know them better. That's not to say that regulars need not take up their end of the equation. There are many who do.

I do think it's a two-way street and from personal experience, there's been a lot of interaction with friendly regulars who've had very interesting input in the discussion that I happen to be very interested in.

I don't understand that, Dante'sInferno. Isn't it for the purpose of building an internet community of individuals around the world who share a common love for horror, that HDC forum exists?

While the bond -- as varying in degrees as it may be -- shared among HDC forum members often comes in full and ruthless force against glaringly stupid posts from newcomers, I would draw the line against bashing newbies for the simple reason of having gone through the ordeal myself.
