So seriously...when did it become so hard to find a job?:p

I've been job searching for like 3 months now!!! I've gotten one extremely bad interview, and all the rest of my call backs have been for hours I can't work.

Okay....so maybe it's just hard to get the job I WANT....but still. Yesterday I made THREE calls. I got voicemails for all of them...not one of them has called me back yet. I follow up all the time, people say they'll get back to me...and NOTHING.

I don't know what to do anymore. I'm really frustrated, and my college loans are going to have to start being re-paid. I'm starting to feel like I went to college for no reason (which I KNOW isn't true), it's just that I'm really kind of depressed now. You work really hard for something, and then....NOTHING. I don't expect any job to be handed to me, I guess I just wasn't prepared for how hard it was going to be...that's something they DON'T teach you...you know? :p

My mom told me that yesterday a receptionist job opened up at her work, so she's gonna find out about it for me...I won't mind working that for a while, but I didn't exactly go to school to do that ( and I have nothing against receptionists, as I'll probably have to be one for a while. I just mean that I'm looking to do something related to my field). I guess I just want the job I went to school for :( WAAAAAAAAAAH.

BAH. I'm not sure why I made this thread, other than to vent. I guess I'm just whining. HOWEVER...if you want to share your thoughts/advice/or just tell me to shut the hell up....go for it :(

Thank you though. It really is hard to get into...everyone wants experience...they don't care that you have a degree, they want you to have had at least a year of work...it's like...how can I get experience if nobody wants to give me experience? :(

So yeah...I'm basically freaking out that I'm going to be stuck working a job I don't want for the rest of my life...b/c nobody will give me a chance at the job I DO want...and that I actually went to school for. Everyone keeps telling me not to worry, but it's really starting to get to me I guess.

I could always go back to school I suppose...but since I just finished, the thought of 3 more years for a masters isn't very thrilling ;) I eventually want to go back, but I really need to work right now. Going back means more school loans....UGH...it's such a vicious cycle..

you keep doubting your reasons for all
those years of studying..not to mention
the amount of money you borrowed ..etc.

I myself have been training hard to become a qualified teacher..studied for
7 years..with placements as teacher aiding
in the meantime..
Last year..i got my masters ..finally..and now concentrating on my bachelors..
however..em getting the same response..
sorry ..no fulltime placements available..
As for them bloody voice mails..!!grr
Makes you want to storm down to the offices and find the person to that voice and choke her..
They never ring back..courtesy call my ass!!..
You feel that you want to give up..but don't..after all that hard work..something will eventually come
around.
Em still waiting too ..
in the meantime..we have all just started our xmas holidays..
em one of the few lucky ones from the
education dept..who will continue to get paid over the holidays because of my degree..
other work collegues arent that fortunate...they got their last pay on monday,,no more for them till feb 06

Luckily, I have people in my life who help me out, so I don't have to worry about being kicked out or not having my bills paid...but it makes me start to feel bad after a while. I don't like being dependent on others...it's always great to have people who support you and help you, but it's good to stand on your own too. All of this not working just makes me feel like I have no purpose or something. In school, I had a purpose...I was getting my degree:p But now it's like....what am I doing? I know it's not good to think negatively like this...it's just hard to stay positive after a while :(

EXACTLY! It's like nobody cares...they don't call no matter how many times I follow up! And some of the places I apply to are like 45-60 minutes away from my house. So I really don't want to waste my time/money driving up to these place just to be told "SORRY, the position's been filled" or whatever :( I wish THEY would just call me and tell me something/anything.

College is like this safe little bubble, and once you leave it...I swear it's like one of the scariest things ever:p I knew it was going to be hard, but I wasn't prepared for all of the rejection...or for that matter, total lack of response/general impoliteness.

Thank you for the encouragement. It's good to know that somebody feels the same, and understands what I'm going through.

Trust me, I'm know how lucky I am and I'm very grateful for all I've been given in life. Things could be SO MUCH worse, and what I'm going through is nothing compared to what people go through every day...it's not even a blip on the radar.

I try never to take things for granted. When I hear things like what you've told me, it always puts things into perspective and forces me to think about my own life...to focus more on my "have's" than my "have nots".

The U.S may be a "dreamland" to a lot of people, but it's still not an "easy" place to try and survive. I don't believe ANY place is an easy place to survive...but there are certainly places where you can have a better quality of life, yes. Most people don't make enough to live comfortably (or what WE'VE been conditioned to believe is comfortable) and struggle to pay the bills each month. Even here, very few people have it easy.

We don't have to worry about alot of things that people in other countries have to worry about. But that doesn't mean we have no worries. But again, trust me...I know how fortunate I am.

But I hear the same damn story from my wife...she's got two medical degrees...went to school forever, owes fuckloads of money because of college loans...

And me, her hubby...

Smoked a whole fuckload of pot in high school, was really violent, had a terrible attitude towards education, and got expelled...

TWICE!

Then...never went and scored a GED, never went took a single course in college...

And I've supported my unemployed wife...
And our baby...just fine...for almost 4 years now.
And no...I'm not a laborer...
I sit in a comfy office in the penthouse of a high rise office building.

I'm so glad I didn't waste my time with college.

That's not to say I'm not educated now though...

I've matured...decided I wanted to learn about life, history, whatever...

So I read, I research...I learn about it on my own.

I don't need some opinionated professor telling me what to read and how to think.

We do know how lucky we are but thats just our point..
the jobs over here(NZ) are plenty but are taken up by foreigners who will work for the minumin wage..where as those of us
who have studied hard for our professions
are being sent to the back of the line.
You come to our schools here and they are
being taken by teachers whose second language is English and thier mother language 1st and foremost..
its ridiculous but hey...thats beauracracy

I have university degree (political science) and I work on Monday as typewriter (handwritten text retype in Microsoft word) on Tuesday I work as secretary on Wednesday and Thursday I work some delivering jobs and carrying bags.., on Friday again as typewriter
I have no pension insurance and have health insurance only because I am still listed asunemployed because I work in firm which deceives country and taxes

Hard to tell because I am no good in writing English

What I need is a job, which I can't seem to find, because employers don't like people hold BA's in Religious Studies and are mentally ill.:p EXCEPT Uni-bloody-versities.

I'm supposed to be writing a book. I said I was going to write a book. I know how the storyline goes, I know most of the characters, I know lots of things. I just can't get it out of my head and on to paper... or rather, computer screen. Either way, I can't transmit thought from my brain into my hands.

we have members of parliment here
who spent half thier lives in and out of police cells...and have done well for themselves..

Em not racist by no means..but 10 classes out of 15 are taught by pakistani indians..in most schools around N.Z.
Almost every shop owner is pakistani indian..
Every takeaway..taxi driver..vege store..
furniture store..(see where em going with this) are either pakistani indian or Asian..
I almost freaked when we went to wendy's ice cream store yesterday and
guess who served me ..new owner/operator...Asian..and macdonalds
owned and managed by //pakistani indian.
Its bloody amazing...good for them..at least they contribute to our economy..
but try going to them for a job and you would most definately get a refusal because you know your worth and they will not pay it ...they only hire thier own race who work for less money.

I'm glad things worked out for you. I have no doubt things are going to work out for me too, even if it's not over-night. Not everyone who goes to college has a problem finding a job, it all depends on the field you choose.

I don't regret the time I spent in college for anything. It made me a better person, and it's something I'm really proud of. I never thought of my prof's as opinionated people who told me how to think. In fact, they encouraged us to make up our own minds and become our own person. It wasn't a waste of time at all. If anything, it was time/money extremely well spent.

I'm going to have to second this. I went to college but now work for the railroad with a bunch of guys who didn't go to school. and every now and then one of em will bring it up that I could have gotten this job right out of high school and not have had to "waste my time" at college.

so anyways, if this was myspace, I'd give you some kudos for that.

I just always feel that it's usually those who didn't go to college that like to say it's such a "waste"....how would they know? THEY DIDN'T GO ;) And if they know people who went, and thought it was a waste....that doesn't apply to everyone...and if you can honestly go to college for 4 years and think it was a waste...then you did something wrong, in my opinion...you should've taken something away from it.

Even if I end up doing something that I didn't get my degree in, I'll always have my degree...and nobody can take that away from me, and it's still an accomplishment that I'm proud of.

I've gained plenty of "real world" experience as well...things that nobody could teach me in college. However, I've also gained knowledge from college that I could never have gained had I not gone. Just b/c I chose to go, doesn't mean I missed out on the "real world"...and just b/c I'm having trouble finding a job right now, doesn't mean I'll never get one. I'd never even get the opportunity to get into my field of work if I didn't go.

And again...to say that prof's tell you how to think is ignorant...I'm sure there are some who may be more forceful with their opinions than others, but that wasn't my experience at all.

I don't criticize people who chose not to go...so it's kind of lame for other people to criticize/laugh at those who do. Waste of time? Hardly...I wish I could "waste" some more time in college...it was the best thing I ever did.
So yeah...:p That's all I have to say about that:D
