Well, being that we're mere hours away from Dec. 1st, I thought now would be a good time to start the unavoidable "Best Horror of '05" thread!

So, what's everyone's pick?

I didnt really see alot of new ones this year....Saw 2 would have to be my personal favourite, followed by Land of the Dead. Havnt seen Devils Rejects yet, or High Tension [North American release was '05, wasnt it?]

Id say High Tension, Saw II shortly following.

I'd have to say The Devil's Rejects has my vote as well.

I would say Saw II with Devil's coming in at a very close second. If I was giving a score, Saw II would be 9 and Devil's would get 8.8. Then would be Land of the Dead.

I didn't see any of the remakes (of American or Japanese films) so I don't have an opinion on them.

I am not a fan of House of a 1000 Corpses, but I must say, The Devil's Rejects kicked ass. It was a very smart, dark, funny film and the soundtrack rocked. So that is also my pick.

Land of the Dead, then Devil's Rejects, followed by Saw II and High Tension for 3rd. The people associated with the Fog remake should be burned at the stake.

Best:

-Devil's Rejects
-High Tension
-Saw II

Worst:
-The Fog- I thought this was just as bad as Boogeyman. But they both sucked balls.

I'd pick Land of the Dead as the best (at least most interesting)
and High Tension as the scariest/most fun

the worst (and i think it was this year) for me was White Noise

I'd say, of what I saw, Land of the Dead was the third worst.

What exactly did you like about LOTD?

It wasn't at all Romero's style, so it can't be that...

Compared to other Romero flicks it had very little gore, it can't be that...

The acting sucked.

The storyline was shit.

So...what was it?

Despare
12-08-2005, 07:37 PM
It was the evolution of Zombies, Bud started the whole using weapons and "thinking" type stuff and he even felt sorrow when Doc Frankenstein died. It was Romero like, there was social commentary. I love how people only die because of greed and other people... it's all because of human nature. I LOVED the whole "What's that? Duck!" scene and the gore in the unrated version was pretty good. Story was just fine, what'd you expect? It was a fun zombie flick and I liked it. How can you say it wasn't Romero like when it WAS ROMERO!?!? If he made it then it's Romero like. It may not be as much like his older stuff as you would have liked but it was his. Anyway, to each his own. I hated American Beauty, Apollo 13, and countless other "good movies".

-Haute Tension - Liked it until the ending made it suck.
-Land of the Dead - Not up to Romeros standards at all, but still better than most zombie movies that come out nowadays.
-The Fog remake - Didn't really like the first one. Never got around to seeing this.
-The Devil's Rejects - This was really entertaining.
-Ring 2 - Ack! I hated the first one and I don't even know why I bothered giving this one a shot.
-Dark Water - Didn't see it.
-The Amityville Horror remake - I thought it sucked. The first one was good but not great. This one was barely even okay.
-Skeleton Key - Really good, solid movie. Loved the ending.
-Undead - The first 45 miuntes ruled, then it took a faster downhill plunge than just about any movie I can recall.
-The Exorcism of Emily Rose - Never saw it. I'll get around to it some time.
-Saw 2 - Way better than the first one. The twist at the end didn't make the whole movie completely suck this time around.
-The Descent - Never even heard of it until this thread. Any good?

The Exorcism of Emily Rose was like the court case and Father Moore. It was telling a story, of a real girl named Emily Rose. It wasn't suppose to be horror, nor scary in the way you are assuming. It was suppose to be shocking, that this actually happened - or atleast, some believe it did. It's suppose to make you think, not piss your pants. Your very newbieish at horror. I'm only 16, been into horror for 1-2 years. I'm no expert, but I do have taste.

i think saw 1 was better personally, but thats not whats this is about. lotd, was ok. skeleton key was great! hate me if you want but cursed was the most FUN *scary* flick of the year. maybe because its not really scary, just a seat popper at some points, but it was fun to watch in the front row with a bunch of friends screaming at everything even if it was corny. Red eye gets my best suspense.

dark water my ass. 90 minutes of shit if you ask me. oh my a dead girl in a water tank.

I too have to go with Devils Rejects. High Tension was a good movie but that plot twist at the end has just been done to death by now. Really tired of that shit. Plus, High Tension didn't end with Free Bird.:D

High Tension originally came out in 2003, it was just released in america in 2005 so i guess Devils Rejects takes the cake. Bunch of great non-horror movies this year too

Four Brothers

oooh i forgot about crash. That was a must see. Yes i liked sin city just as much as everybody else, but batman takes the cake because, if you've seen any other superhero movie, new or old, they don't even begin to compare

I had high hopes for Emily Rose; and the possision parts were frightning or, could have been. I watched the directers comments on the film and, he did just what he set out to do. But court room drama, Gag! Not for me. Thank god, the possision seans did not go hollywood, they kept it real but, they could have punched it up some. Man, did I just contradict myself?

I feel the exact oposite. In my opinion, it suffered for every moment spent outside of the courtroom. But this is coming from someone who'd put Runaway Jury as one of his favourite movies;)

In a year that greatly lacked good movies, and even though it was much different than the first and completely strayed away from the first's plot, "Devil's Rejects" easily gets my vote as #1.
