Just wondered what peoples fav comedy's are. I have to say Cheers is the probably my favourite US comedy with Red Dwarf the best of the Brits.

"Frazier" was one of my favorites. And an oldie but hilarious goodie: "Soap."
I tend to like British sitcoms better than American ones though.

I don't have just 1 favorite comedy. So I'll do a little list. "soap" was great. Drew Carey, Home Improvement, The Cosby Show, Cheers, Three's Company, Facts of Life, Herman's Head ( this was a great show imo, but apparently not everyone liked it cuz it was cancelled) It's Like You Know( which was also cancelled) Family Guy, Futurama, Robot Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, & Spongebob. Those are all I can currently think of. I know the topic was sit coms, but I threw in some Adult Swim, along with a splash of Spongebob.

It's only funny If you have the right IQ. I'm not yet sure if its supposed to be high or low, but yeah... like I don't find South Park funny any more... Its a shame, I use to love that show. :( I thought the soup nazi was funny.
That 70's show. I haven't watched tv scince lent of last year. I'm not catholic, someone dared me. lol.

All time favorite is probably Laverne and Shirley (before they moved). Roseanne, Mama's family, Dick van Dyke, I Love Lucy and Cheers are up there too. New(er) ones I like are Drew Carey, King of the Hill, Sex and the City and My name is Earl.

Is it really that hard to understand observational comedy.
I suppose "of all time" would have to be I Love Lucy - insanely popular, still very funny, and innovated the whole genre (3 camera set-up, studio audience, etc.)

That depends on what it is they are observing. If you have no frame of reference to help understand where they are going with something then it will fall flat on its face. It'll work for some but not for all.
why do people love family guy so much - i've watched it and its always the same thing - repetitive and obnoxious IMO

Family Guy is aquired for sure but the jokes are often different and when they're not they're told differently. The pop culture referances are great and never repeat. Like the Kool-Aid man, and the Goonies with the Corey Haim (sp) referance thrown in too. Ah, good ole' Family Guy. C'mon, who else would talk about Edward Olmos? Who!?

Roseanne is hilarious, i watch it all the time when i'm just sitting at the computer.
Faamily Guy, Futurama, fresh prince is alright, but if i have to hear will smith say "ya no wat u'm sayennn a'rightttta' rightttt " ONE MORE TIME!....
in the end. i think seinfeld is about the only series (US) not to fall into a big slump - it ended at exactly the right time and never tried the gimmicky (baby, new cast member) shit
in the UK - i'd say Fawlty Towers is the same (blessed with an incredibly funny and short series run) - i also loved Black Adder (though not the 1st - but 2-4 are amazing)

Fawlty Towers is a gem and I think there are only twelve episodes in total. John Cleese stopped so early precisely because he didnt want it to go stale.
You ever seen the Christmas special they did of Blackadder? Its well worth a look, its based on a reverse Scrooge, where Mr. B is the most generous person in England.

Seinfield was ok but I personally felt it was over-rated. Largely because of Jerry. Could he deliver any line without a "oh my gosh I could burst out laughing at any moment" smile? Kramer was obviously great, I dug George, Elane was alright but it the end it was Jerry who really turned me off to the show. Uncle Leo and the parents were all great too, it was just Jerry...

I've been paying extra attention to the episodes I've watched the last couple of days since reading this post and I don't really see it all that much. Doesn't bother me at all either.

I don't like many sit-coms, I love crime dramas...CSI (I know it's fake, I used to use the GCMS equipment all the time..but still)
but I love My Name is Earl!! I always hated, and still hate Seinfeld.
but I like family guy too..and American Dad holds a special place close to my heart..hehe

Yeah, Freaks n geeks was the shit, funny as all hell, with pretty solid storylines, great soundtrack too...the website says the same guys did another series "undeclared" which I'd like to check out at some point.
I also liked Northern Exposure (which wasn't strictly a sitcom)
Ned and Stacey was also pretty funny
The single guy was alright too
The original series of COUPLING is really funny...I haven't seen past series 2, but so far, it's all quality.
There was one I can't remember the title of...I think it was set in a bar/restaurant, the main characters name was "jack", and there was a chick that was (I think) supposed to be his ex working at the place that he still frequented as a customer...the chick had short brown hair...I know I'm going on next to nothing here, but whatever the hell this show was, it was pretty funny.
