Halloween is my fave, it never really scared me, but i love it!!!!
actually, spelling aside, its not a bad list. one of my favorite all-time books about horror movies, a book called Projected Fears, lists the ten most "influential" horror films - and its almost the same list.
The book's list is:
Dracula
The Thing (1951)
Psycho
Night of the Living Dead
The Exorcist
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Halloween
Silence of the Lambs
Scream
and, The Sixth Sense
interesting huh?

^^ Really sinister movie. I saw it on the big screen for film class years ago. The print was completley silent with no music at all quite a weird way to watch it. Amazing on the big screen tho all the same.
The Exorcist tripped me out when I saw it at the theatre when they re-released it. The surround sound was really creepy. It was a midnight screenin and I was WAY stonned.
Halloween 2 had some moments that made me anxious so did The Grudge but I was stonned then too.
I love watchin intense shit when your that lil' bit too toasted. Its a weird parnoid assault on the senses.

Nah, I didn't like the book that much either. Both the book and movie are confusing, but at least in the movie its put together in a less convaluted way.

Yeh I liked how the film was kinda a insight into the writing of the book. I really enjoyed his book Junkie tho.

Yes, Max Schreck (sp?) definitely was a creepy character in that film. Anyway, from the list there, I suppose Audition is the only one that really creeped me out, although there were moments from the rest that I found a little tense or scary. It's very rare for a film to actually freak me out very much. Not sure why.

You become kinda desensitised to them after awhile, as a kid horror movies scared me more after watching them than during.
I think my imagination turned them into something more scary than they actually were. I had a few sleepless nights after watchin stuff my brother and sister got out as kid :D
The Mothman
11-22-2005, 06:49 PM
none of those really scared me. TCM and Halloween had their moments however. as for The Excorcist....I dont see what the big deal is! not one single part in that movie scared me in the least bit.

The Exorcist really grabbed me the first time I saw it. After I saw it I was in the kitchen fixing food and my husband was in the living room watching TV and the commercial came on where the dog passes out over a man's smelly feet and my husband did a low laugh at the commercial and I went into a shrieking spasm in the kitchen. I was that keyed up.
But when they came out with the Director's cut, I really didn't expect to be scared. I'd seen it a million times but out of nowhere comes this scene where she's crawling down the stairs, and I lost it. Quite fun! Only movie that's ever spooked me twice.

Blair Witch Project!
Most of it was pretty boring, but the last 15 or so minutes is totally worth it. Ive seen it quite a few times, the end always creeps me out. Hell the first time I saw it, I refused to watch the ending I was so terrified. A little after they got to the house, I up and left. Wasnt in theatres or anything, but I had to leave my house, I couldnt take it. Completly terrified me and Im not afraid to admit it.
****
First time I saw it, Signs scared the crap out of me too, cause I wasnt expecting much of anything. When the alien walked out from the bush though...holy crap. Turned it off, went to bed, hardly slept a wink. Next day I watched it again and I laughed at myself for being so terrified of it. Srtill a pretty cool flick though, IMO.
****
Didnt scare me while I was actually watching it, but the night after I saw Jeepers Creepers for the first time, I had a crazy nightmare about the Creeper.
****
None of the ones on the list scared me though. Some damn good movies there, but none that scared me.

Maybe I'm weird, but I thought Blair Witch Project was the most boring horror flick I've seen in a while.

I agree that the majority was really boring, but the tension they build in the last 10-15 min or so was terrifying, IMO.

Another one that scared me in a different kind of way was American Pyscho. The majority of the movie, while being incredbly acted and great overall, didnt scare me in the slightest. The ending however, or at least the way that I interpreted it, was absolutly chilling.

*SPOILERS* [obviously]
The typical way, but Ive heared other interprtations. I took it as meaning that the majority of the movie never happened, Patrick Bateman didnt exist; him and his actions were simply fantasies of [I forget his name, what the lawyer calls him at the end]. One of my all-time favourite endings. How did you interpret it?

*CONTAINS SPOILERS*
Everything happened just not the way you see it through Bateman's eyes, for example the chainsaw dropping kill he killed her just not in that particular way. The last killing scene when he snaps at the ATM, it happened but just not in the way he experienced it in his head. The cop shows up a second after he shots the lady then he runs into more cops and blows up their cars in a couple shots from a regular hand gun, it happened just not that way, what you see happen on screen is just another of his fantasies and when the cars blew up even he stepped back and couldn't believe it.
The whole thing about the guys getting each other's names wrong is just showing you how nobody really knows each other they're just obsessed with the exterior and none of them are going to correct someone who gets their name wrong because it would be too embarrassing for them. So when he killed Paul Allen everybody screwing up each other's names kept giving him alabias.
He hates what he has to be to fit into the world he was born into(remember Evalyn saying ''your father practically owns the company and him replying ''Because I want to fit in.'') He's a yuppie but in the chainsaw dropping scene when the hooker ran into one of the rooms he had ''die yuppie scum''(or something close to that) on the wall. He can't stand that he's a yuppie so he wants to get caught, through the course of the movie he goes from killing someone and covering it up perfectly to running aroung the street shooting people at random and confessing it because again he wants to get caught.
The very end of it when the lawyer is convinced he's some guy named Davis and that he had dinner with Paul Allen twice in London it just gives him another alabias even though he's blatantly trying to be caught. So what that last monolouge I guess you could call it is basically saying is that he's more aware of what he's doing but he doesn't care and he's not going to stop.
Having said all that I think it's an ambitious ending that the viewer can make their own decision about I just think that^ is the more likely of the options.

Of the movies listed I have to pick the Exorcist. Of the movies not listed I have a serious issue with the Amytiville Horror (the orig). That movie scarred me as a child.
