Their is a movie I've read about in Fangoria and have wanted to see but never have.
I haven't been able to find it.
It's a Japanese horror flick I believe and it's called The Audition
Fangoria reviewed the DVD, they said it was slow untill the very disturbing end.
If anyone knows of this film inform me if it's worth it or not.
(No Spoilers, though)

Yes! You *must* check this one out, FangoFan!
It can be slow at times, but stick with it. It's one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen, and the last 30 minutes are so are some of the most brutal images I have ever seen on film.
Great one. Definitely one of my favorites from Japan.

I second that, Audition is a must-see. Truly disturbing. Supposedly when it's shown in a theater about half the audience leaves during the last ten minutes.
Takashi Miike made another film called Ichi the Killer that is also really great. It's not horror but is really gruesome, rooms full of body parts and that sort of thing.

JUST HAD TO MENTION ANOTHER ASIAN FILM, THIS ONE DIRECTED BY SAMMO HUNG, IN HIS PRE-SHITTY DAYTIME TV SHOW CAREER, IT WAS CALLED "MISTER VAMPIRE"....IT'S THE FUNNIEST HORROR-COMEDY I'VE EVER SEEN, AND ALSO HAS STUNT COREOGRAPHY THATS WAY IMPRESSIVE EVEN BY TODAYS STANDARDS, AND I THINK IT'S LIKE ABOUT 10 YEARS OLD....ANOTHER REALLY GOOD ONE (JUST ACTION, NOT HORROR) IS CALLED "PEKING OPERA BLUES", AND IT JUST ROCKED, BABY!
AM i ALONE HERE? OR HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY SEEN EITHER OF THESE TWO GREAT FILMS??? LET ME KNOW WHAT U THINK OF 'EM, AND IF U HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OF SIMILAR FILMS, LET ME KNOW...:p

I saw Mr. Vampire 4. I agree, it was funny, good kung-fu choreography, and the vampires were... different.
Chinese vampire movies are noted for featuring vampires that hop around instead of walk. They can be stopped or controlled by putting spells in the form of Taoist scrolls on their foreheads.
Can anyone recommend any other Chinese vampire films?

wha....!?!?!?!?
there was a mister vampire 4?
I didn't even know there was a sequel at all!!
Also, if anyone has any idea where to get dvd asian action or horror films, preferably with english subtitles available, please let me know..

I have heard many horror fans say this is a must see movie and has one of the most horrifying last 30 minutes ever. The question is would it be worth the money to buy it because I know that's the only way I will ever get to see it (it's even hard to find buying it, any suggestions?). I'm also not to keen on subtitles, does it take away from the movie at all? Opinions wanted :) ..........

It's a great movie, and the less you know about what happens the better. The subtitles don't take anything away, just watch it. I know Blockbuster carries it, so you could rent it.
A very good movie, it wont scare you as much as it will disturb you.
Then you will be scared at how disturbed you are
Not for the faint hearted and I know that sounds out of place here but for once it is true.
A true horror film for a change, not as in wow dude horror is cool but as in wow dude I'm a sick puppy, I have to watch that again, but in a while.
One of the joys of being English is that this was on the TV, I got myself a copy instantly.
Go get it, fantastic stuff.

Agreed. Hell of a movie. Some of the most brutal filmmaking I've ever seen. AUDITION's definitely one of my favorite Asian horror flicks. Genuinely disturbing, in ways that *very* few horror movies -- even the great ones coming out of Japan lately -- are these days.
Highly, highly recommended. This movie will fuck your brain.

It's shown a lot on IFC--so maybe you could record it and save some money. I don't know if it's shown this month, but I'm sure they'll stick it back into rotation soner or later. They usually do.
I found the first half quite slow but the second half more than makes up for it. Probably the only time I've been in a packed theatre where a syncronised gasp and recoil has taken place.

Both Audition and Battle Royale are great pieces of cinema. Like was said before, the less you know about Audition before you see it, the better. But, basically it will lull you into a false sense of security before presenting you with an onslaught of unsettling imagery. Check out other Miike Takashi (the director of Audition, who pumps out at least 3 films every year) films if you want to see some glorious Asian movies, which often defy genre, aswell as the senses. Battle Royale is simply one of the best movies ever, and everyone should own a copy of it. Kids thrown together on an island, given a weapon each, and told to kill each other. And the evil transfer student is a manga villain braught to life on the screen :o

Gulp. Audition is the movie that will make you wary of first dates with people who might have issues or funny scars.
It's a little bit Blue Velvet, a little bit Play Misty for me, a little bit Misery... great, distubing, grueling.
It's a must see, if you have a strong stomach.
Dreaming Girl
02-13-2004, 11:08 AM
Audition is basically a romantic drama of sorts that quickly dissolves into a surreal nightmare. The style is VERY David Lynch. I think it's a wonderful movie, and one of the few truly "disturbing" movies I've ever seen. It's readily available to rent from various stores in my town, so it shouldn't be TOO difficult to track down... I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed it, the movie is basically about a guy who spends most of his time searching for love/sex. If you want to buy the movie try b-movie.com. It has a bunch of Japanese horror movies, but the service isnt all that great.

Yup. Takashi Miike. He's done a _ton_ of movies (60 or so), but other really good ones include the hilariously sick Visitor Q and the funny, if a little long, Happiness of the Katakuris. Katakuris is a musical!

Everybody's pickin' up on that feline beat,

Now a square with a horn,
can make you wish you weren't born,
ever'time he plays;
and with a square in the act,
he can set music back
to the caveman days.
I've heard some corny birds who tried to sing,
but a cat's the only cat
who knows how to swing.
Who wants to dig
a long-haired gig
or stuff like that?
When everybody wants to be a cat.
A square with that horn,
makes you wish you weren't born,
ever'time he plays;
and with a square in the act,
he's gonna set this music back
to the Stone Age days.
Everybody wants to be a cat,

while playin' jazz you always has a Welcome mat,
'cause everybody digs a swingin' cat.

I liked this movie a lot because of the slow build-up. The last few minutes were intense in my opinion. And I thought they did a good job of developing the characters along the way and building a kind of subtle suspense. A good film, if not a great one and it stuck with me.

i fucking hated the grudge and the ring. im more into the vamp, zombie, and slasher flicks of the genera. as long as its not all supernatrual its ok.
i take back what i said about haiting all supernatrual films. i sorta liked darkness falls( mabey just because the made the tooth fairy out to be something more that just a bitch in a to-to), and i also kinda liked darkness.
basicly i dont like it if the ghost just bitches and moans through the whole film, or when jap films that i didnt like that much gat riped off and made even worse.

I appreciate Japanese horror films, and I especially liked the originals of "The Ring" and "The Grudge."
But "Audition" has to be the most disturbing Japanese film I've seen. A beautiful young woman who loves to torture the men she lures to her apartment.
I had trouble watching some scenes, they just "hurt" too bad.
I don't know many people who've seen this one though. A twisted friend of mine happened to have it and forced me to sit through it.

Audition is a brilliant film, and one that truly secured Miike's place in the exalted circle of horror masters. I watched it for the first time without knowing anything about the movie previously... Needless to say, I was quite affected when what I thought to be a harmless romance went horribly awry.

I was severely dissappointed by Audition. The first half of the movie was like a gentle TV drama. I JUST managed to stay awake, ready for the second half, which did improve a bit. There were SOME creepy moments, and a nice S&M scene at the end. But all in all it didn't live up to the hype. Maybe I was expecting too much. If I'd watched it not knowing that it was a horror film, then it might have had more of an impact.

I thought the Audition was a terrific movie. The slowness in developing the characters added to my horror. From the beginning I felt the man was going to get something he deserved at the end, toying with lives the way he did, manipulating an audition so he can decide who is ok for him. His chauvenist conduct had to be severely punished. It made me wonder if this story worked that way because of the Japanese male culture. Are things still that male dominated and women submissive over there? The shy softness and gentility of the main character made her actions more horrific. Her torture was playful and done with giggling glee. That moving sack too - great shiver. And did she vomit in a plate and feed it to the thing in the sack? Tsk Tsk Tsk. Too cool.

I orginally saw clips on Bravo's 100 greatest moments in horror and was intregued by Audition. It was shown on the Indy channel not long after. I thought it was good, but has been said already was a little slow to get started.
i loved the slow and uncertain start - it really didn't feel like a horror film until it got near the middle - that made the ending all the better for me

I didn't see it all. But the bit I did see ( where she slices a few things off ) seemed like something I would wanna see haha.

She gets kicked off the stairs by horny son who promptly calls the police while dad sans one foot and not likely to keep the other is staring at the psycho while she repeats a previous conversation.
Thats a mouthful...punctuation is a tool of the devil.
I thought it was great, spends an hour and a half building uo the relationship and twenty minutes making you squirm.
A little confusing near the end like many of Miike's films.
Cool beans.

I just saw the director's cut of Audition last night. I really have a hard time categorizing this movie as a horror movie. I would almost consider this a psychological thriller. It was like a sick and twisted version of Fatal Attraction. I didn't mind the slow pacing of the film at the beginning. There were some genuinely funny and touching moments. Where this film lost me is after he passes out. Then he starts having all of these visions and dreams that did not make much sense to me. The last 15min was disturbing and it made me more uncomfortable than scared. I thought the film could have ended better. I mean what the hell was she spraying at the boy, Breath spray? I mean I think she would have been better off hitting him in the head.
Maybe I was expecting too much, but I would give the movie a 6/10.

By the love of God that movie was terrible. Maybe it's just because I find Japanese entertainment to be absolutely revolting in every possible way (except for sailor moon), but that movie was really bad. I mean if you like watching senseless torture then I guess the ending of this boring flick is for you, if you can stay awake until then that is.

Looks like someone completely missed the point. I don't see how you could say that the ending scene was "senseless." The entire film was building up to that point. That's like saying that the final half hour of the Godfather was senseless.

you "heart" Kubrick, but yet you can't handle a real slow moving movie. a potboiler, if you will.
apparently you haven't seen any of Kubrick's films.

Bwahahahaha. And don't forget Barry Lyndon. I love that movie, but DAMN it's slowly paced.

I saw this one like 3-4 years ago and has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot. Slow, boring and I didn't found the torture scenes worth watching this. I really don't understand what people find so good about this movie.
