FilmJerk.com reports that writer/director Mark Steven Johnson's Ghost Rider, starring Nicolas Cage, has been moved up three weeks from August 4th to July 14th, 2006.

Wes Bentley, Eva Mendes, Matt Long, Sam Elliott, Peter Fonda and Donal Logue also star in the anticipated comic book adaptation.

TV Guide caught up with Peter Fonda, who plays Mephistopheles in writer/director Mark Steven Johnson's Ghost Rider opposite Nicolas Cage. He talked about the film and here's a clip:

TVGuide.com: Did you go back and look at the comic to inform how you should play the Mephisto character?
Fonda: I had read a few of them before, but I thought regardless of what the guy who wrote the comics had designed here, it was up to me to put it on the screen. As it was, they let me play totally against part. Let me tell you, nobody has played the Devil quite like I do. Oh, man, I loved it. It was really cool.

IESB.net talked to Nicolas Cage about the Ghost Rider movie and here's a clip:

Well, he's a man who's just trying to take a negative and turn it into a positive like we all do, we have been talking about that here today together with The Weather Man, trying to take movies and do something positive with any negative feelings that I have. Johnny Blaze is a superhero who had a very horrible thing happen to him and he's taking that negative and he's trying to make something positive out of it no matter what and that's, in that way I guess you can say I am like Ghost Rider.

This could be good. Ghost Rider always was one my favorite comic book heroes, so hopefully the movie can do him justice. I'm not a big fan of Nicholas Cage, but I think he could pull it off.

Well the thing about Cage is that he actually read Ghost Rider, he was quoted inan interview I read back when I first heard about this movie was that he used to have a huge comic collection and then he was robbed which really sucks b/c I recall he had some preety valuble issues of various series. Now I know that actors will say that just to make the public believe that their going to do the charicter justice, i.e. Ben Afflack Daredevil, but I can't explain it but I think that Cage will slid into the character kinda like Tobey in Spider-Man. Atleast Tobey addmitted that he had never read Spider-Man before.

My only problem with the cast is that Medez is playing Cage's love interest, in teh comic she's a blond chick but oh well, Medez is really hot so its ok.

Never read the comics myself, but it looks kickass. Not a big fan of Cage in geeral, but alot of fans of the book are saying he'll be good, so I cant imagine he'd be that bad.

Agreed, Cage as a superhero? No thanks.

I was freaked out when I heard he was gonna be Superman, I guess he decided he wanted a more obscure role.

That trailer left me confused. On the one hand, some cool imagery, but shouldn't they have hired a few more people who could actually act? Some of the dialogue reminded me of STEEL.

I kinda think this film gonna suck. I'm a GR nut but cage is so wrong for this. This movie needs lots of violense and rated R. not pg13 because any superhero that has a nasty attiude must be R rated. I wonder there doing JohnyBlaze deal if so cage better not fuck this up. Or are they doing the 3rdseries I hope they show the flames burning the flesh off the face when he turn into GR. for me makeup would be 100% better than graphics. if the makeup artist is good a.k.a Tom Savini.

Nicolas Cage on Ghost Rider!
Source: ComingSoon.net June 5, 2006

ComingSoon.net got a chance to chat with Nicolas Cage on the set of his new film "Next" about the anticipated Ghost Rider adaptation. Here's a clip:

"They were just tweaking certain things towards the end," he explained. "The reason the movie was delayed, I know that's been on people's minds. There were some effects that finally got authorized by the studio which [writer-director] Mark [Steven Johnson] really wanted and they're pretty big and it took time to put them together and design them. So we had to delay it and I think it's good because it's something we really wanted to fight for with Ghost Rider going into battle with a helicopter."

Comic-Con Audio: Ghost Rider
Source: Scott Chitwood July 22, 2006

ComingSoon.net/SuperheroHype.com talked to Ghost Rider writer-director Mark Steven Johnson and stars Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. You can listen to the audio interview here!

In order to save his dying father, young stunt cyclist Johnny Blaze sells his soul to Mephistopheles and sadly parts from the pure-hearted Roxanne Simpson, the love of his life. Years later, Johnny's path crosses again with Roxanne, now a gogetting reporter, and also with Mephistopheles, who offers to release Johnny's soul if Johnny becomes the fabled, fiery Ghost Rider, a supernatural agent of vengeance and justice. Mephistopheles charges Johnny with defeating the despicable Blackheart, Mephistopheles's nemesis and son, who plans to displace his father and create a new hell even more terrible than the old one.

Ghost Rider rides into theaters on February 16.

New Ghost Rider TV Spot Airs
Source: CAH January 16, 2007

As Ghost Rider writer/director Mark Steven Johnson announced last week, a new TV spot for the film aired during the premiere of "American Idol" on Fox Tuesday evening. 'CAH' has a rundown of the spot for us:

I'll describe it as best I can remember...

-It starts with the famous GR riding off the building scene
-Columbia/Marvel Logos (I think it had Marvel's logo)
-V.O.: "What if you could sell your soul?"
-Shots of Johnny and Roxanne together, Roxxy asking if something is "burning" with Johnny just giving her a sort of "shut up" look
-V.O.: "To save someone you loved"
-Mephisto: "You will be the Rider for as long as you live..."
-Roxanne: "So, tonight you'll..." (she makes a gesture with her hand, I think touching her head signifying the flaming skull part)
Johnny: "Yes, I believe so..."
-REALLY REALLY cool shot of GR riding over a guy (I didn't see who) in slow motion
-On February 16th
-Mack: "Cool..."
-The Adventure Begins
-Now, there were a whole bunch of shots including GR and BH and his demon buddies, the goth girl being interviewed by Roxxy, and GR riding up the side of the building
-Now, as the screen says "GHOST RIDER" you can hear Johnny say "I'm Ghost Rider."
-Last shot is of GR riding through the water, it looked like he was surfing on the Hellcycle.

Personally I was a huge comic book nerd when I was like 10 and then somewhere in middle school and high school I lost interest, I still liked the characters but I stopped buying comics, I wish I hadn't b/c then I could have gotten Ultimate Spider-Man #1 which is worth close to $1,000. Anyways, after X-Men came out I started going back to the comic shop and then recently my budy with all of the Ghost Rider comics got me going with him almost every week and I'm more of a Spider-Man Iron fan so that collection is slowly growing again. I have a decent sized X-Men collection consiting of Gambit's first appearnce, Rogue joining the X-Men, and most of the major events in the Onslaught storyline. So I lost the point of what I was trying to say which was that the movies have gotten people back into or started new readers in comics. However, I think that was a silent goal with Marvel doing all of these movies.

The production is completely up in the air with no indication of moving forward. I've been tracking it closely (still trying to get the job) and even read an early draft of the screenplay that was funny, but weak.

Craziest part of the script was Carl Lucas taking the name "Cage" from a movie theater marquee playing Nick Cage move. I laughed pretty hard at the reverse engineering on that one.

I disagree. For starters GR is an anti-hero. Second, Cage stated that he had a big comic book collection with a lot of GR, this collection was stolen evetnually though. Lastly, I recall reading or hearing an interview with Cage where he stated that he has a GR tatoo. So all those factors alone qualify Cage to play this part.
Besides after I saw Cage in Gone in 60 Seconds I am able to see Cage in a leather jacket in a car or on a motorcycle.

I think you might agree with me in that GR is a better pick for Cage than Superman.

I never understood where the idea came from to cast Cage for Superman.

I never understood where the idea came from to cast Cage for Superman.

He's a HUGE comic book geek - like crazy weird huge geek. He took his last name from Powerman and named his son Kal-El.

He pestered the studio heads at Warner Brothers constantly about the movie, saying how much he wanted to play the part. He's an Oscar winner, pursuing a passion project - the suits thought it seemed like a good idea, but no director would make the movie with Cage as Supes... but it would be really weird, wouldn't it?

I'd go see it just for the curiosity of it all.

I remember hearing that Cage ditched Lisa Marie Presley because she torched his comic book collection.

And Ghost Rider looks like it will suck about as much as Daredevil or The Punisher did. (The Thomas Jane Punisher, not the Dolph Lundgren one, which I actually liked more.)

Well this movie was o.k. I think that Daredevil was better. I felt that some of teh CGI was obvious, like the close-ups of the skull, it had an animated smoothness that I thought was very apparent. The movie moved wayyyy too fast. I felt like they were in a hurry to get to GR. I think Blaze took control of his power too easily and too quickly. I think that there should have been more character development in the beginning with Blaze and his father and even Roxann's father.
The Elementals were defeated way too easily and qucikly.
I was upset that Black Heart did not go all-out Black Heart, plus his appearence was weird and out of nowhere. I thought that Cage and Mendez were fine the story and the flow just wasn't all that great. I don't think that it was as bad as X3.

Agreed X3....bottom of the barrel.
Not as good as I'd hoped...but def. not one I was pissed about paying for.

Kind of like the idea of Stallone as Batman...before somehow...someway...Michael Keeton was cast....now that's just a weird deal all around.

Much to my surprise, this was a pretty good movie. I had very low expectations. but I ended up enjoying this film quite a bit. Even with Nic Cage channeling the spirit of Elvis. Good FX and a fun story. Sam Elliot was terrific as "The Caretaker" and Eva Mendes is one smokin' hot woman. A good movie all around.

Exclusive Interview: MARK STEVEN JOHNSON FINDS RELIGION WITH 'PREACHER' - PART 1
The GHOST RIDER director/writer talks about his upcoming HBO series, the possibility of a sequel to the Spirit of Vengeance and more.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By PETER BROWN, Associate Editor
Published 6/8/2007

Growing up reading just about any Marvel comic book he could get his hands on, Mark Steven Johnson has always been closely tied to the comic world. So it isn’t surprising that two of the films he has directed and wrote the screenplays for, DAREDEVIL and GHOST RIDER, happen to be based on classic comic book characters with long histories. With GHOST RIDER wrapped up and now out on DVD with a very good two-disc extended cut edition, director and writer Mark Steven Johnson has turned his attention to another comic book-based project but this time a television series by the name of PREACHER that is scheduled to appear at some point in the near future on HBO. Johnson gave iF Magazine a little insight into PREACHER as well as the possibility of a GHOST RIDER sequel.

iF: I know you have been working on PREACHER for HBO and that you said before it is going to be faithful to comic. Can you give us an update on the status of the series?

Mark Steven Johnson: Things are moving ahead and great. I actually already wrote the pilot and (HBO) wanted to me write a bible on how the first season would go and I did that. There was a big shake-up at HBO recently and we weren’t sure if we were still on the bill but things are still looking really good. It has been a dream of mine to bring this comic to television and make the series exactly faithful to the fans of the comics who loyally follow the book.

iF: So will be seeing the same stories from the comic book in the series?

MSJ: Well there would be nothing new to add if we did that so (PREACHER creator) Garth (Ennis) and I have been creating new stories for the series. I love the book so much and I was telling Garth that he has to make the stories we are coming up with as comics because I want to see them.

iF: Obviously HBO has some openings with DEADWOOD, ROME and CARNIVALE off the schedule and it seems like a natural fit with those …

I saw it and I don't understand what some people are pissin and moaning about. It was a fine action movie. It was by no means up to Spider-man levels(although it's way past Spider-man 3 levels) but, it wasn't BAD either. The special effects were great the acting was average. The only problem I had with it was the annoyingly lame villain Blackheart.

It was a lame film all around. No sense of connection with ANY of the characters. The villain sucked, which makes the central conflict weak, which makes for a BAD film.

It did, however, have a guy with a flaming skull riding a fiery motorcycle. And that's the only thing it has to offer.

I'd have to agree, I was preety upset when Blackheart did not change to his demon form, I was really expecting it.
