View Full Version : The Cabin

This will be the first feature length film by up and coming horror director, Garrett Gardner. It's a fairly straightforward slasher film where 4 buddies head up to the cabin for a weekend only to run across an escaped mental patient with a taste for homicide. It won't be released in theatres but there's about a 50/50 chance that you'll be able to find it at your local rental place. (Details are currently being ironed out that would put it on shelves at Hollywood Video and Blockbuster as well as on Netflix.)

You can expect cheesy acting, ample gore and a whole heaping helpin' of bwind22. :D I'm not the star, but I'm a main character (One of the four friends.)

Anyways, I'll keep you all updated as we get closer to releasing it, but right now it looks like it will be in post-production until Feb. 2006 and then get released sometime after that.

That's all for now. Only 2 days of filming left for me! (4 scenes) Woohoo!

Damn dude, you haven't mentioned any word of this in months. I totally forgot about it, I'll pick it up off Netflix if it gets there. Er, I mean... ONCE it gets there.

Yeha I posted an update or two on the 'Step Aside Bruce Campbell' thread, but no one ever responded so I just kinda stopped doing it. Plus, I've been busy working 2 jobs and filming in my free time so I havent had all that much time for updates.

We have all but 1 kill scene filmed and there's probably less than a dozen scenes left in the entire movie to film! We can all see the light atthe end of the tunnel now and are getting pretty anxious to get it wrapped.

I'm crossing my fingers on the Netflix thing, but we'll see... I'm sure it will depend on how the finished product turns out.

If it ends up that it just goes into a few film festivals and never gets any sort of distribution, I'll make sure to find a way to make it available to you guys on here in case anyone wants to watch it.

You wouldn't be the first. The film industry seems to embrace actors and actresses who are more "physically" talented.

Uhhh.... I don't recall saying I was physically talented either. Haha. I think I got this role because I was willing to work for free and I have most of my weekends open. :p

I'm about to start shooting the final scene any minute now. It's my kill scene and once it's finished, I'll be done with everything I need to film and then it's just the waiting game for me. I'll keep you all posted.

Hey, What's up everyone?

I'm the director of this movie and I figured I'd stop by and chat.

As far as the movie being distributed, that all depends on how the final product turns out and if we get the right deal. So many filmmakers get screwed over on DTV deals, so it's hard to say that we will get a deal worth taking.

Other than that if anyone has any questions feel free to ask. I guess I could update the progress of the movie during post production. I plan on working for around 10-18 hours per weekend on it, but there is a lot of work still to do. And since we really don't have a crew, I will be doing pretty much everything (editing, sound fx, digital fx, score, color correcting, mixing, etc.).

Our budget was very low, so think of this like Robert Rodriguez with El Mariachi, since our equipment was around $8-9k, but our production budget was dirt cheap at around $1k. If you want to compare that (budget) to another low budget horror movie, the movie Sleepover Nightmare was made for $200,000+ and had around 53 crew members. We had our cast and at max 2 other people for crew at anytime. Most of the time I was the cameraman and we would usually have someone on the boom, it was rare when I actually got to direct from the production monitor (which was a treat), but that's what we had to work with.

I'm not sure if I want to release it myself or have a distribution company do it, but I plan on making a hell of a DVD with tons of outtakes, extras, commentary. So either way it goes, the DVD should definately be worth a pick up (not just a lame trailer for extra features).

Until Later...
Garrett Gardner

Had a bit of Darwinism taking place last weekend.

Saturday afternoon we were set to shoot the final scene for the movie (coincidentally the opening shot) we arrived at the cabin and were getting ready. I had charged the battery for the camcorder before heading to the cabin and when we were about to shoot I checked the batteries power in the camera and it was blinking (meaning pretty much dead). So I figured well, let's get setup and shoot this as fast as possible! Well, I go to move my truck out of the shot and....nothing. It doesn't start, I keep trying and nothing helps.

So, the scene couldn't be shot because pushing the truck out of the shot was not practical and getting everyone into makeup for the shot with no guarantee on how much we would get shot (due to the battery) I decided to postpone the shooting.

Luckily my dad was at the cabin before we were going to shoot and gave everyone that came up with me (4 people) a ride back to the cities while I stayed at the cabin and from time to time tried getting my car to start. Monday I had to get the truck towed to a nearby town and it cost me $560.00 to get the fuel pump and filter replaced.

Shitty weekend indeed. Should shoot that scene either friday afternoon or Saturday afternoon and start editing this weekend as well.

bwind22
10-18-2005, 04:26 AM
Damn, that sucks! Did you get everyone in their makeup before you realized the scene wasn't going to happen?

$500 for a fuel pump seems a little bit high to me, but I guess when you're stuck at a garage in the boonies, you're kinda at their mercy. That sucks dude...

Urine Sane
10-20-2005, 11:50 PM
No, I did not get them into makeup, luckily. And yeah I think $560 is way too fuckin high for a fuel pump. The pump was $271!!! Like you said Im at the mercy of the inbred yokuls. $65 for the tow, and whatever for 2 hours of labor.

It's going great, it's really exciting to see the pieces come together.

And dude, when I cut a trailer for it (and I doubt I can go much more than a month longer without feeling the need to) I will burn it and come show it to you. And yeah, it should be available online. I'll try and get a website worked out with Jason in the coming month or so.

Very cool stuff.

Well, if you, your friends, family, or school have a camera you can get ahold of, that's all you need to get your start. Get a camera and a couple friends and go make a movie. It doesn't have to be anything groundbreaking, just get your feet wet and get something on film. After people see your first movie, whether its good or not, you will plenty of people interested and asking about your second movie and it grows from there.

Like Urine Sane said, just do it.

25 huh? Well, I just turned 21 in August so Im not buying the "too" young defense. Like I said, don't make excuses. I've been working 40 hours a week at a manufacturing plant for almost two years just to make this movie. I got a $6500 loan to be paid off in 3 years and I paid it off in 9 months. It takes more than just wanting to, take that desire to succeed and make it drive you, because nobody is going to call you one day and offer you your dream job if you don't bust your f*cking ass to get it.

If your friends suck, then put up fliers at a college for auditions. There is always a way around roadblocks, you just have to want to get by them. It almost sounds like your searching for an excuse so you won't have to try.

Make it happen mother f*cker!

That's too bad, but you might not to get a loan if you have a camera already. That's one of the most expensive elements.

Fine, don't do it. But there are things called cash loans, where you put up collateral for it (that's what I did) and I didnt have to tell em what it was for. I could have had a $6500 crack party if I wanted to.

I had an idea for the different language tracks, I think it would be funny if we had the people who play each character (or we can find replacements) do the spanish, german, and french tracks for the audio. Of course a requirement of doing this would be that the person cannot actually know that language and I figure we'll just use an online translator. Hell I'd watch a spanish track of a movie if it were the actual actor bumbling through the lines.

As far as commentary tracks I think there are going to be a lot, I keep coming up with different ideas, and I don't think commentary tracks are used quite to the degree they could be.

No, I haven't. Reason being, I can't download anything on to my computer at work and my computer at home is a little piece of shit still running on Windows 95. It's the slowest moving piece of shit so downloading anything on there is a nightmare.

Update on The Cabin.

Okay, this film was slated for an April release, but it's been pushed back to June for now due to a few snags in post-production.

As promised, I still fully intend to make this available in some form or another to you guys.... Best case scenario, you'll be able to order it from Netflix. Worst case scenario would be we either set up our own website and sell DVDs off there or (This will be up to how the director wants to handle it) upload it on to Youtube or something like that.

In any event, it should be available to you guys in one form or another by July 06 at the latest (barring any more post production snags.)

I'll keep ya posted.

bwind22
06-06-2006, 11:48 PM
Just an update....

Due to post-production issues, the release has been pushed back again. We were looking at early June, now it'll probably be more like mid-late July (Hopefully. That's assuming we don't keep running in to snags.)

gee BW, I never knew you were an actor too. For that matter, you never mentioned it either grrrr.

I just read the entire thread. The movie sounds real cool, and its awesome to know you are one of the main protagonists in it. I surely hope Netflix has a copy for me, or you gotta burn me one or link me up to the download page.

All the best, I hope it makes into a few festivals and become really successful. I also wish all the best for your acting career, and hope you get some really meaty roles in other movies.

Who knows? We might see you AND Bruce Campbell in Raimi's Evil Dead 4! :)

Well, this was more of a 'for fun' thing than a career move for me. I just thought it'd be rad to be in a horror movie & my boy Pema hooked me up with Garrett's email address so I dropped him a message. As luck would have, someone had just crapped out on them & they needed someone available the very next weekend, so I said I'm your guy. lol

I'd really rather write screenplays than act & I'm sorta trying to work on that in my free time. If another low budget horror film getting shot locally falls in to my lap, I'll definately go for it, but I probably won't be seeking them out.

I posted my opening scene from one I'm working on right now for critiquing on this forum somewhere. I'll go track it down and get ya the link if you're interested.
