During an interview this weekend promoting Elizabethtown, Kirsten Dunst confirmed rumors to Zap2it that Thomas Haden Church will play Sandman and Topher Grace is Venom in director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, opening in theaters on May 4, 2007.
"We have really great people though as the villains in this film, Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace -- Venom and Sandman," said Dunst, who plays Mary Jane Watson in the Spidey films.
"Maybe I wasn't supposed to say that," she added before reversing her claim. "It's the other way around. You're right," she conceded to a journalist.
Dunst has yet to receive a script for the third film that will begin shooting in January. "But I know the general story. There's a lot that they're trying to fit into this one."
"I think we have ... I'm going to say two and a half bad guys," the "Elizabethtown" star said. "Because I think one of them is resurrected. But yeah, two and a half bad guys, I think, about in this movie."
She is referring to Thomas Haden Church playing Sandman and Topher Grace playing Venom in the film, with the identity of the "half" villain unknown at this time, but it could possibly be Harry Osborn turning into Green Goblin II or Hobgoblin.

Venom is going to be great, but he is totaly out of place with Sandman and a possible Goblin. Personaly I say do one or the other not both. If Rami wanted to do 2 villians do Venom and Carnage b/c at least they would make sense together, I know that Venom and Carnage hate each other but the story would move more logicly I think.
With this combination (Sandman, Venom, and Goblin) I fear Rami may screw this movie up.

Still, Venom/Brock should be muscled....it'll take a hell of alot to make that kid look muscular enough. Oh well, I cant imagine him being any good...but you never know I guess.
And I do agree that 3 villains might not be the greatest idea. Venom and Hobgoblin could work, but with Sandman in the mix it'd just be crowded and confused. Once again however, you never know....Im psyched for it anyway:D

Grace as Venom seems to be a 98 pound weakling turns into vengeful superbeing sort of thing. If he's playing Brock differently as a more repressed, awkward type who can't deal with his anger, than the symbiote will be very welcoming, and make for a pretty scary transformation. Eddie Brock might be a big bruiser, but it's more important that he gets screwed over and gets so mad he can't take it anymore. Venom is an insidious and creepy entity as well as a destructive counterpart to Spiderman. In this case, I think Grace might be an interesting interpretive choice. Now, the utter lack of acting ability might however be a wall. And Sandman's a C list villain. I was hoping Doc Connors would be turning into the lizard. But, on the plus side, bringing in Venom now allows for Carnage in number 4. Cillian Murphy as Cletus Cassidy would be awesome.

From what I know about Ultimate Spider-Man, the movies tend to follow this comic line a little more so than the original comic books. I don't know what the Eddie Brook in Ultimate looks like but if he's a skinny guy and then when he becomes Venom he gets buff then Topher Grace should be fine for the part. I think that Grace might be able to pull off a evil obsessive attitude like the realy Brook. But there is a problem, Grace looks like he's about the same age as Tobey, and as I recall Brook is a few years older than Parker???

IESB talked to Kirsten Dunst (aka Mary Jane Watson in the "Spider-Man" films) at this weekend's "Elizabethtown" junket and she said she will start filming Spider-Man 3 in January:
Q: Are you doing anything special to prepare for this one?
A: I do have to take lessons in two different things. But I can't say because I would give it all away.
Q: Is this really going to be the last one for you?
A: Yeah, unless they pay me an exorbitant amount of money. (laughing) Well if there is more story to tell and Sam Raimi is on board and everyone is then maybe but this is what I am signed to do... three.

The attitude sucks, but you can't blame Sam Raimi for really digging having a budget to work with and a Pullitzer prize winning author working on your screenplay. Anybody who has Michael Chabon doctoring one of their scripts and a multimillion dollar budget after such a humble beginning will be putting on some airs. By the way, is Michael Chabon going to be aboard on 3? The guy writes the only lit fic I can stomach nowadays.

Looks like Elfman will follow suit with John Dykstra (who left Spidey3 earlier this year) and take his leave from the Spider-Man franchise. Composer Danny Elfman has cued up much work for 2007 (the year of Spider-Man 3's anticipated release), including the rumor of scoring the movie adaptation of the adventures of the superheroine: Wonder Woman.
After much creative differences between Sam Raimi and Danny Elfman
during the post-production of Spider-Man 2, Raimi brought in other composers to complete the unfinished score. One of those composers was Christopher Young, and according to sources close to Raimi and Elfman, it appears that Young will be hired for the job. (on Spidey3)
Elfman is currently working on: The Corpse Bride & Charlie and The Chocolate Factory for Tim Burton.
Read more on the forums at Elman.FilmMusic.com
I'm kinda glad Elfman is not scoreing the movie b/c if you go and listen to his other scores they all sound the same, Batman, Spider-Man, Men in Black, Hulk. Seriously listen to the opening score for hulk and then listen to the opening score for Spider-Man. There are parts that sound the same. Don't get me wrong, I like Elman's sound but I think a change might be nice. Well I take that back, when I think about the score for Spider-Man it really fit the movie well. Crap, Rami might be screwing this movie already!:(

Wow! How do you figure they sucked? You can't do Venom too early or else it would have been stupied. Venom is a 2nd or 3rd generation villian. If the Spider-Man movies are going to stay true to the comics and the fans then they have to start from the begining. Now, the Green Goblin was not the first villian that Spidy faced, but the Goblin is a 1st generation villian and his arch voe. Plus the back story with Harry gives the films more substance than simple comic book adaptation. In my opinion they are using Venom early and with the wrong combination. Like I said earlier if they are going to do a Venom story, then it should be about him alone, or if they must have a second villian (as they are doing in #3) then it should be Carnage b/c it makes more sense. But noooooo there doing crapy Sandman b/c Tobey likes him. I'd say that Sandman, Chamellion, and Volture are some of the worst 1st generation villians.

Not the worst by any means (that would be Rocket Racer, or whatever his name was... the guy that rode a rocket skateboard) but still not even close to the top tier. Hell ya, the CGI stuff will be bad ass. But the character is stupied, I'm not sure how Sandman could move the story of Parker along. Rami has always said that he tries to pick villians that move the story of Parker, and help him grow as a hero.

It's official. Danny Elfman will NOT be back to score Spider-Man 3 as previously reported, and it has been reported that composer Christopher Young, who completed much of the onscreen score for Spider-Man 2 will helm the project for 2007's most anticipated film.
An official announcement is expected to be released soon, but this is coming from the same source who first revealed that Danny Elfman wouldn't be back in the first place.
It's also believed that there's a chance Young will reuse alot of Elfman's existing themes, since they are property of Sony, so for continuity sake the film will feel as much a part of the existing Spider-Man franchise as possible.

Sandman is so incongruously paired with Venom. If the two did bother teaming up, they wouldn't compliment each other at all. I think Rocket Racer might have been a better choice. It would give Fifty Cent a role that would keep him from mangling the next Halloween. Pair Rocket Racer up with the Stilt Man and the film writes itself. Sarcasm? You make the call. Sandman blows.
I just bought that book that is a reprint of l9 or so of the original comics and the first encounter with Sandman is sorta silly.
