View Full Version : Invasion Of Privacy?

Dustin and I were watching a show last night in which they were discussing the fact that New York has put up security cameras in the street lights, above the sidewalks in the city...

There were protestors with signs complaining that this was an invasion of privacy...

This is how I see it.....When a person is out in public, there IS no privacy...What's the difference between someone looking at you on a security monitor, and everyone looking at you from across the sidewalk?....I don't understand the point that these people are trying to make.....It's common knowledge that most criminals will not commit a crime until they are sure no one's watching, if they know that someone is ALWAYS watching, that should be a deterrent, right?....I think it's a pretty logical means to try to cut down on the crime in New York (or ANY big city)

I can't imagine how anyone would have a problem with it, unless they ARE the criminals...How can the 'average law-abiding' citizen, have a problem with this...Am I missing something?

One of the protestors said, "Everyone has SOMETHING that they don't want the world to see, and we have a right to protect that"....Okay, even if that's true, It isn't like 'those things' would be put on display in public anyway, so the cameras wouldn't be seeing it......And, when I thought about that statement, I tried to think of something that I, personally, wouldn't want anyone to see (for whatever reason), because the guy said "EVERYONE'...All that I could think of was that I wouldn't want people to see me naked, and I wouldn't want them to watch me having sex...BUT, those are things that I wouldn't do in public...So, what's the big deal?

Stores have used security cameras to deter shoplifters for years, how is this any different?

I discussed this with Dustin, he couldn't come up with anything other than what I did...So, I figured I would ask you guys...

I'm not sure how i feel about it. Any crime deterrent is fine by me but say i'm walking down the street.....nobody is around....i get the urge....you know what i'm talking about..........do i have to spell it out......oh..i guess i do...i'm talking about "nosepicking".....don't deny it...you all do it. How can i get in there and really dig around if i think its gonna be filmed.

I agree with you Bloodrayne. Those are the only things I wouldn't want somebody to see and thats why it only happens in the privacy of my home. I think that the cameras are a great idea though. I remember watching a crime show awhile back and having those cameras helped catch a group of gang members who had beaten someone to death in the street. I forgot what the show was called but it was a documentary on people who kill just for fun.

I agree as well.
Although its VERY creepy. I work right by wall street, and everyday, when i walk by the stock exchange, i notice more and more "strange things". Besides the obvious "army guys" (which are sooo just there for show- to make peopel feel safe)...
im convinced..there is plenty of shady shit going on there that the people dont see.....sharp shooters in the sky scrapers....CIA ops dressed as bums.....

i might sound like im paranoid, but trust me...

I know for a fact because i work with import export companies - the feds tap the lines all the time. We've had a few visits too. (of course nothing wrong or illegl was done, but still - they definitly poke their nose around in phone calls and emails...and the second rifle..or explosive is mentioned[cause we do alot of military shipments] they automaticaly buzz themselves in.

I guess we have to accept th we no longer have TRUE privacy. But ehh ..who cares....if some poor sap's job is to listen in on my phone while im having phone sex with my gf....sucks for him....i dont care...lol

That might be fine and good for you, but this is my business we're talking about here. They should have to pay a fee atleast. :p

I don't REALLY care about it. Public is public.

I also agree that it isn't an invasion of someones privacy, I think it would be a good idea.
If they had cameras in the street lights people might behave themselves, knowing that they're being watched.
I don't see how it it could be considered an invasion of privacy.

Haven't they had these cameras in London for years now? I'm really of two minds on this issue. On one hand, I can perfectly understand the reasoning behind it, and it would most likely help to deter crime. On the other though, something about it sends up warning flags in my mind, and I can't stop thinking about 1984. I don't think it really fits under the "invasion of privacy" banner, but it makes me uneasy.

I don't see a problem with it. Besides the naked thing which only takes place in my house and I'm not a criminal so I don't care what they tape in public.

The more security the better.! I'd be perfectly fine even with a police officer following me everywhere I went. (yes, I live in fear nowadays)

Oh I dont give a shit about 'scratching' in public or anything. I got told off by my partner for 'sorting the boys out' so they were comfortable in the middle of a shop. I didn't know this group of women were watching me at the time. But i think if they're gonna judge me then so be it.

I never felt like I was being watched in New York when I was there. In my opinion, its like London.....there's always gonna be someone freakier to watch round the corner.

They have em' where my folks live in Chicago too, but they're more for monitoring the intersections than the walkways.

But I don't give a shit, its not like I'm gonna be smoking weed or having sex on a public sidewalk, especially in a busy city. If you have nothing to hide, who cares?

I think you already know how I feel about this

A Camera will never prevent a crime from happening. Even after a Crime has occurred, They don't always find the Criminal. They are just another illusion to make us feel "safe". I can understand if you want a Video Camera in your business. a store, bank, etc. But in a public street corner ? If that isn't Invasion of Privacy, what is ? Do we have to "protect" every corner on the planet from crime ? Does it always work ? Who even is watching these camera's ?

Rayne made the comparison "What's the difference between someone looking at you on a security monitor, and everyone looking at you from across the sidewalk?"

I don't know what town you live in, but people don't stare at me 24 hours a day and have it all on record.

If that is not spying ? when does it become spying ? Who draws the line ? Do you trust the government will make the right decision ? Crimes still occur on video. People get shot, people get beat, People get robbed. Criminals won't stop because of a camera. fear is not a rational emotion with them. unlike a normal person.

This is not just a question about "Crime", unless you think everyone is a Criminal. Our nation is overcome with a mentally of fear and paranoia. The 9/11 Hijackers were video taped before getting on the plane.. did it help us that day ?

Yes, It is a Invasion of Privacy. They are just another tactic to feel "safe". It might seem harmless but if we accept this, We will accept any freedom taken away for the illusion of "feeling safe".

I really could care less....there's nothing that I do in public that I would be ashamed/embarrassed about...as long as the cameras aren't in the privacy of my own home, go ahead and film me ;)

Seriously...there are cameras in malls, toll booths, convenience stores, casinos, and some intersections ( to see if people are running red lights). You're being watched more than you think about. This is really no different to me.

I'm not sure that it's going to deter crime...but it may help police find the people responsible, should a crime occur...just like any other camera does.

Even if I DID do something embarrassing...like pick my nose or scratch my ass ;) I really wouldn't care....nobody watching those cameras knows me...they'll probably get a good laugh:D

The whole camera on every street corner thing doesnt bother me by itself, but its just one step closer to being monitored everywhere we go.

I have a problem with it, a BIG one. Its called baby steps.

The federal gummit has realized that they just cant come in and trample your rights all it once they have to do it in increments. Then use excuses like "its for national security," and "its for the children."

Rarely do I head North into Mordor (Anywhere North of I80) but I have seen the camera on the roads and at tollbooths.

I hope they like the pic of me flying by doing 75mph giving the camera the bird.

Next will be saying its OK for them to look at what we do on the internet, phone calls, and private conversations. Hey what are you bitchin about you said that you had nothing to hide so what difference does it make???

Ever hear of "Dont tread on me."

Ditto.

First they came for people with red hair and green eyes and I didnt care cause I dont have those traits.

Then they came for the people with blonde hair and blue eyes and I didnt care cause I dont have those traits.

Then they came for the people with black hair and brown eyes and I didnt care cause I dont have those traits.

Then they came for the people with brown hair and hazel eyes and I care cause I have those traits.

So I look around for my fellow man for help and no one was there to help me.

It worked in WWII with the Nazis in Germany and it will work here too. All the gummit needs is for the sheeple to follow each other to the slaughter.

Just remember that sometimes "the majority" only means that all the fools are on the same side.

I understand both of your views MTC and Desposable...I get where you're coming from completely.

However, we're already being watched just about everywhere we go in public...there are cameras in just about every store that you go into...and the cameras that are on streetlights or in tollboths...are simply there to make sure you're paying your tolls and not running red lights. I don't find anything wrong with that.

I would DEFINATELY take issue with people coming into my home and monitoring my phone calls, etc. However, I can't live my life worrying about what the government will do next.

No matter what country I live in, there are always going to be things that I disagree with gov't wise. Unless I have my own private island, somebody is always going to make rules that I'm subjected to follow. It's not always fair...and it's not always right...but that's just the way it is.

If we didn't have alot of the rules we have, the country would be worse off in alot of ways I'm sure. We've got a lot of freedom here...more so than in alot of other places in the world. I mean, seriously...people risk their lives to live here. We take alot for granted b/c we're used to it....we bitch and complain about things that people in other parts of the world would think we're crazy for complaining about.

I think that we have it pretty good in general. When you see how people live in other countries (not that it doesn't happen here as well) it makes you feel pretty grateful for what you DO have. If it ever got to the point that I felt like my privacy was really being infringed upon....I'd leave.

However, you don't have free reign to do everything you want, or have all the rights you feel you're entitled to, no matter where you live. If you did....that would just be scary, wouldn't it? If we didn't have any rules...imagine the chaos that would ensue then. It would be FAR worse than how bad we THINK we have it now.

Let me say this again, baby steps. The cameras are a another way for the gummit to control our lives. Pay your tolls so that the gummit can get more big and bloated. 40 % of gummit is waste and corruption. Sorry I aint playing ball.

You know what happens when the cameras are on??? The crime continues anyway. People run red lites, shoplift and deal drugs regardless of whether the cameras are there or not.

The rules put in place are for the law abiding citizens to follow cos' the criminals dont follow rules anyway. Its already against the law to commit a crime but it keeps on happening.

Just today my lady and I are in the truck backing out of a parking space and this woman slides in behind me, I almost hit her, she leans out the window and calls me a "fuckin jagoff." My lady just gives her the what is you problem look and off we go.

So what does this woman do??? Follows us to my kids school, and when I get out of the car to go in and get my boy, this woman comes up and starts reading me the riot act.

I wont get into what I said to her but she left in a hurry.

My point is we already have chaos going on and these so-called precautionary measures the gummit takes do nothing for my safety. I can take care of myself thank you and thanks Sam Colt.

And what kind of woman approaches a guy 6 foot and 200lbs that looks like this( see avatar). If I had my boy with me and she did that I would of made good on what I said to her for fear of his well being.

Guess what the cameras at the gas station were probably on and didnt stop this shit from happening.
