Producer-director Robert Wise died yesterday, at age 91. Although most famous for his Oscar-winning musicals SOUND OF MUSIC and WEST SIDE STORY, he directed several science-fiction and horror films, including CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE, THE BODY SNATCHER, AUDREY ROSE, and THE HAUNTING (the atmospheric 1963 version, not the crude 1999 remake).
Although he didn't specialize in horror, both BODY SNATCHER and THE HAUNTING stand among the best films ever made in the genre. THE HAUNTING, especially, is an acknowledge classic -- perhaps the greatest haunted house movie ever made.
He also directed at least one great science fiction picture DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, plus THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN and STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE.
