Haunted

Can we brainstorm a way to start some sort of collection for the victims of Katrina? I want to open a sort of discussion on how we as the denizens of HDC can make a generous contribution to the victims of such a violent storm.

We need:
Water
Nonperishable food items
Blankets
Basic medicines (OTC)
Money
Ice
Anything else that anyone can think of

What are some of the ideas you guys have?
Lets get together on this, right!

I think this is a great idea Haunted. Now, on with the list.

Clothes

Ok, that's all I can think of currently. You took most of the one's I was gonna say. I'll think of some more later.

I have no clue as to how we can get anything there, but as soon as a way is found, I'm down to help next week. Unfortunatly I am broke until then.

I'm sure a web search will turn up dozens of ways that we can all take our items to the same organizations in each of our areas? I'll have a look in just a minute.

Anyone know if local fire stations are helping? I know after 9-11 I cleaned out my closets and took all my things to them

I think it would be really cool if we could set up a relief thing that the members here could contribute to...

I'm searching for any organizations that are taking food and clothing donations, so far it's cash only. We'll NEED some sort of organization to go thru...I can't think of any way we could set up our own...anyone?

That would be cool. I'd participate like many others would.

Well we could always gather all of our stuff and send it to maybe one person...

Anyone who would be willing, I myself would be personally willing to take on the responsibility, or anyone els who is willing we could have several people who would be willing to take the time to take this on....

I already have planned on sending quite a few things that myself and my family has gathered up, so if any of you would like to send things, you are more than welcome to pm me for information...

This would be a reallly kind and selfless thing for us to all do...

Marroe, you're kicking butt, girl! Kudos to you!

Kpro, I'm with you. I think that HDC should do sorta it's own thing and maybe make a contrabution in the name of Horror.com.

I really really hate to say this, but I'd like to stay away from religious organizations. I don't trust them to really do the right thing. I don't want my contrabutions to be sent along with religious tracts on how Muslims are going to Hell or how a person can be saved. It's a selfish propaganda manuever.

Also, the Red Cross can't always be trusted. I once organized a bake sale for the earthquake victims of Gujarat India. We raised close to five hundred dollars in relief funds. The Red Cross took our money and never spoke to us again. They stole it, officially.

So, Marroe, keep up the good work, woman! We'll find something that we can all settle on.

Twelve hits in less than two hours. Show the world we're not a bunch of heartless freaks, right! We may be dark. We maybe creepy. But we're men and women American and otherwise who give a shit about our fellow persons.

Haunted, I don't trust the Red Cross either, I am sending all my stuff through my local chapter of the Salvation Army, which a very close friend of mine works for in my hometown....So everything I am sending is garunteed to make it there...

Anyone interested in helping the cause, feel free to pm me...

Well, The Red Cross hasnt given me any reason not to trust them thus far. Please......no stories. I dont want to start feeling bad and worried about a good deed. I have a good friend that works for them and he'll keep me posted on the tracking of my money. I'd like to think there's good in everyone. Even if it be a little good.

I wouldn't worry about it HB...hopefully all is good and your donation will be used for the purposes intended :)
I've always donated to the Red Cross, and I've never second guessed it...they're reputable (from what I understand), and they're almost always the organization suggested to make donations to in a disaster...

The fact of the matter is...that you NEVER really know what happens to your money when you donate to something...however, if you donate to an established organization...you have to try and trust that they're going to do the right thing...

And you know what? If something shady goes on, and somebody uses your donation for something other than its intended purpose...you're not going to know about it ;) So...you can rest assured that *YOU* did the right thing...that you tried to make a difference...that you went into it with a good heart...what happens after that, is very unfortunately, out of your control. It's sad, and I don't agree with it...as you want to make sure your donation is being used for the purposes intended...however, we just never really know...

HAUNTED-I'm not sure what you meant when you said that you donated to the Red Cross and then never heard from them again...so they "stole it officially" (your money)....I'm not sure how never hearing from them equates stealing...I never hear from anyone I donate to! LOL ;) But anyway, elaborate! Cause that's not cool if that's what happened...however, there's good and bad in everything...and hopefully if you had a bad experience with them, it was a fairly isolated incident :(

Sorry I am not giving any money to any organization.

Feed the world or whatever it was that the rockstars did for Africa-all that money went to a corrupt government not a dime went to the people of Africa.

United Way- gave them money for years, oh by the way the CEO of the charity was embezzling millions of dollars.

Red Cross- some gave money for the 911 families. Didnt go there. More embezzling going on.

I donated a shitload of baby stuff to my local Salvation Army- the lady that volunteered there was taking the stuff for her own grandkids. I wouldnt think anything of this but I have seen her and her children and her grandchildren around town and they arent exactly in need. Maybe a little more gas money to fill up the huge SUV that they were driving in.

my lady wanted to donate her time to the humane society- oh no we dont need your time to volunteer just your money.

SHow me a charity that isnt corrupt. I dont believe its going to happen. Besides I pay over 50% to charity every week to the federal govt.

Sorry Haunted I am not trying to put a dampner on a noble thing but I believe it has to be said.

Thanks to everyone who has at least made an effort in this direction, either making a donation--or doing the homework to ensure (to some degree) that whatever donation you make is going to go where you want it to.

These people need food and clean water to keep them going while this situation is sorted through. Whatever you do, at least take a moment to research the options available. Hopefully you can find a reputable organization with a decent track record. Best wishes to everyone on any side of this situation.

I feel horrible sitting here in my safe home, while others sit with nothing. I've gone through my closet and piled up all the clothes i can give away.

I can't watch the news anymore, it just makes me cry.

Definitely down for starting up some sort of Horror.com contribution to those who so badly need our help.

I looked into the donation situation-Red Cross is handling a lot of it, however they are asking specifically for monetary donations. This is more cost /time effective for them.

I am not against helping these people out, but...
I am just really frustrated that our government can come up with billions of dollars to go to Iraq & Afghanistan, but they are begging us for money to help this country. The gov. recently gave big oil companies billions of dollars in tax breaks & incentives. Gas is upwards of $6/gallon, which is taking advantage of the very people we need to help right now.

WTF???!!!

The RC told me that we would get the charity equivalent of a receipt (because in most cases chraritable donations are tax deductable and they give you documentation). They said they'd send a plaque to the professor who sponsored it. They also said they'd call him. None of this happened. So I followed up. I had filled out a form when I donated, so sure they've heard of me. They were like, "We have no recollection of you or your donation."

Okay, maybe it was the Greensboro chapter. I can give it that. There just might have been a corrupt person involved.

My grandfather, apparently wasn't too keen on them during WWII. They (maybe it was a certain chapter) made the soldiers pay for aide and stuff.

Also, if you've read documents from the early to mid eighties on the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, the RC dug in their heels to keep from testing for HIV antibodies. They passed AIDS like crazy and are responsible for passing it to countless people. They knew it to. Read: And the Band Played On.

However, they have amended their ways and really really tried to spearhead AIDS awareness and make sure their blood supply is completely clean. So long to the Reagan era!

I've always wanted to be a blood donor for the RC (what can someone do with that...give it to the vampires. HAW!). Unfortunately, I take Lithium carbonate and other psychotropic medicines, so I can't because they're passed in the blood supply. No need to be giving Lithium and Seroquel to someone who doesn't need it.
