I just listened to "Colossus" by Borknagar, so i want to right this.
Melodic Death Metal (MDM, for short so i don't have to write that out much durring this) is by far the better to Death Metal in terms of... well, everything. Not that i dislike regular Death Metal, but it will get repetitive and just annoying after so long.
Not only in origionality does MDM surpass it's predicessor, but in energy. I find myself more drawn in by violins mixed into a chugging guitar or in a bridge than simply blast beats and powerchords played inhumanly fast.
I believe bands like Borknagar and at least the earlier Dimmu Borgir are very much the Genesis or Pink Floyd of the Metal genre. Progressive death, if you will. And as well, i believe Grindcore is a more primitive form of Death Metal.
Don't get me wrong, i am not a huge Death or MDM fan anymore really. I listen to Tom Waits more than anything now, but i still listen to these old bands once in a while and the new bands too. And, i also like Grindcore, dispite my previous statement. I'm simply saying that perhaps these bands (MDM bands, so to speak) are the first wave of a new sound in a somewhat unchanging sector of music. Even though these bands have been around for a long time now... i'm just observing more and more that things in the 'scene' are changing. I think, for the better.
