Baytown Man Accused Of Luring 14 Year-Old From Wisconsin For Sex
Baytown, Texas — A man is behind bars accused of luring a young girl to Texas after making contact with her online. That 14-year-old girl is from Brookfield, Wisconsin.
Esteban Lopez, 37, of Baytown is accused of luring the girl from her home in Wisconsin last week. He is now charged with aggravated sexual assault. Lopez was arrested by Baytown police on Sunday. The girl was found in his home.
Wisconsin authorities say Lopez lured the girl over the Internet and she hitchhiked all the way from Wisconsin to Baytown. That journey may sound improbable, but counselors at the Children's Assessment Center say it all rings true.
Denise Vines at the center said, "Perpetrators can tell by what you say – almost like a palm reader – they can tell by what you give them what they need to say in order to hook you. So that's what they do."
What reportedly broke the case, according to authorities, is that the girl used her friend's cell phone to contact Lopez. The number was tracked to Baytown and police moved in.
In an unusual twist, authorities say the girl's mother reported her missing and went on vacation the next day. Police contacted her on her cell phone to let her know her daughter had been found safe. The girl's mother then diverted her travels through Houston to pick up her child.
The girl was tended to by the Children's Assessment Center. According to CPS, she was reunited with her mother on Tuesday and they returned to Wisconsin.
