View Full Version : The Point?
Just curious as to the point of the new members section here - As far as I can tell - new people introduce themselves and then the old-timers tell them one of two things:
1) fuck off
2) quit spamming (and fuck off).

THE IMAGE was not visible - you blithering idiot. if you want to try to be funny (as opposed to just beligerent) then make sure your stupid "funnies" image is visible to those reading the board. Otherwise its just as pointless as the rest of your mildly abusive and generally irritating posts.

While I get your joke (and got it originally but was just yanking your chain) - I do think SHanks and Zwoti make my point - generally the attitude around here is that until you've posted over 3000 - your a pathetic noob and don't count and are worthy only to be objects of ridicule. I get most of the humor (even the british since I lived in the UK for a number of years - so you can spell it humour if you'd like) but do find the attitude a curious one at times.
The only point I'm making is that in this "new member's lounge" some poor slob posts "hey I'm new" and then the attitude pops out.

forget all this jangling for a mo...
... I know where you're coming from about the bashing. It's not just about the 'big number' posters having a go at the new people, anyone joins in. Amusement can be had, from seeing someone getting riled up when they make their first few posts in this part of the forums. Some take it with a 'pinch of salt' and laugh it off. Then there's the other n00bs, the one's we bait, who get annoyed and take the bait... these are the people we're after... the ones who argue back, which gives us more of an amusing incentive to bash away... childish, ...maybe, but if a n00b can't see the funny side of it, then thats their issue not ours.

Here's a no brainer: Don't post in the New Members forum.
Two years ago, when I joined HDC, I took one look at the New Members forum and simply jumped in the General. No one noticed, and here I am.

Bravo Zero!! I'm glad there are a few adults here. This pattern seems to have stopped now, thankfully.
Alright Sistinas, and anyone that's been here for some time, I would love to hear a history of HDC, in particular the mass cleanup that became necessary a couple of years back. With all the complaining about new members never sticking around and traffic being lighter than it was back in the "good old days", I'm curious to hear what happened back then and possibly steps that can be taken to improve things now.
P.S. And I can't help but notice two MODERATORS participating in this childish practice.

Noob bashing was fun. It was simple-a new member makes a introductory thread and was greeted with a flurry of creative "fuck you"'s. After that they were treated like any one else here.
As far as "mass cleanups", the only one that springs to mind is Kpro's drunken spree.
As far as making a difference? Not much you can do IMO. Online forums are like wearing a beeper in this day and age. Online forums are a dinosaur.

I remember when I first joined there was a lot more traffic and a lot more agro. It really sucked the fun out of posting sometimes and the 'hazing' wasn't just restricted to the noob threads. There was definitely a culture of antagonism although, it didn't deter me and probably didn't deter too many others.
Shortly before I disappeared for a couple of years (due to a WoW addiction) there was the OMC Dave willy flashing scandal which resulted in some expulsions and a revising of attitudes. But the board is definitely much improved and a great resource for sharing knowledge.

Ahhhhhh, the OMCdave incident. I DO NOT agree with skeevy old dudes trying to use the 'net for underage tang. However, I never witnessed him do or say anything out of line(except his silly(fucking dumb) posts). I talked to the guy on chat and the phone, I really don't think he was the demon people made him out to be.In all the conversations we had he never once mentioned scoring underage snatch on the net.
I seriously think Dave was run off because some vets didn't like him. They didn't like his posts. Some people here may not be mods but they call shots;). As online forums die this problem is a scapegoat. Dave didn't kill this forum-facebook and elitist veterans did.

The thread I dredged up was 4 months old and the reason I brought it up is because there are complaints from members about how 'dead' this site is and how it wasn't like the 'good old days', and I pointed out that __V__ had given an explanation as to why things were in the state they were in.
You might not agree with Sistinas' method for creating traffic, but at least he's trying. It's better than making impotent remarks about how 'dead' this site is and then compound the problem by saying things like it's not like the 'good old days' making new members feel decidedly unwelcome.

I don't see any signs that reviving this thread has increased traffic to this site. Reviving this thread has not and was never intended to bring in more traffic, I was attempting to stir the pot, get the vets posting. Usually during a controversy everyone has an opinion. That gets people posting something, anything.
Yes, I was rude and foul mouthed, is that any reason to run away and pout? Like sympathy much?

I wasn't sure which thread you were referring to. There was more than one brought up.
I'm just tired of complaints about how 'dead' things are; this is nothing but destructive. I think Sistinas made it very clear that this is an attempt to liven things up (I'm sure he doesn't really feel that way about you), and like I said, it's better than just griping without making any attempt to rectify the situation.
If you have any tips on some possible hot topics of conversation (you know I have no problem with controversy:rolleyes:) I would love to hear it. I get concerned about voicing unpopular opinions on certain films not because I'm afraid of debates, but because people take it WAY too seriously and get really upset and start hurling personal insults. I recently had a wonderful CIVIL debate with Despare and Bwind on the subject of guns, a very controversial topic, and we managed to discuss the matter without calling each other 'morons', 'd*****bags', or refuse to speak to each other again.
I would LOVE to discuss certain films that I felt were overrated and/or pretentious and give people who seriously think certain highly regarded
films are total crap (they're not all trolls) a chance to argue their case without being subjected to a flurry of name-calling or being told they're just an ignoramus not worthy of anyone's time.

On the subject of facefriend and all those other social networking sites, aren't you put off by how immediate it is and how easy it is for people you don't want to know anymore trying to find out if they're doing better than you in life?
If I wanted to be in touch with those nerds, wouldn't i have stayed in touch? I much prefer a forum. You can drop in and touch base with people you've never met, barely know and don't have much in common with (other than a love of horror)?

So, for future reference: it's perfectly okay to call someone a c** guzzling jerkoff who sucks donkey d**k, as long as that person isn't a mod, then you will be banned. The horrific abuse I've seen dished out to new members and even to people who've been here awhile that has gone unchecked (and sometimes actively encouraged) by the people in charge, leaves me once again scratching my head over the banning of Sistinas. What's good for the goose should be good for the gander.
