View Full Version : Horror's effect on your relationships?

The Sevier County News (http://seviercountynews.com/seviercountynews/default.asp?id=1&i_id=377) just ran an article about my marriage to a horror illustrator, and it got me wondering:
Do you find that your love of horror plays any kind of role--positive or negative--in your relationships? Maybe all your dates end up like this . . .
http://www.matthewwarner.com/smilies/sm.gif
This kind of plays to the whole "you must be a psychopath because you write/read/like that stuff" onus.
I was lucky enough to find a lady who's just like me, as I said. Sometimes it's kinda horrifying how much we think alike.
I've been married for over twenty years. My wife doesn't really like horror movies ....sure every once in a while i can talk her into watching one, just like she talks me into watching American Idol...or some such crap.Marriage is a give and take....just like any relationship.
Sure it would be cool if she was totally into horror.....maybe....i think.....like i said, after twenty something years and four kids....somrtimes you need your space....she might go into one room and watch Nip/Tuck and i will be in another watching Dawn of the Dead.It may not be perfect....but we seem to be happy and still going strong after all this time. The way marriages go now....i would say we are beating the odds.:)

My lady and I have been together for 7 years, I love horror, she enjoys it also.
Maybe not to the extent that I do. I mean I live and breath horror. From my constant babbling about how I would like to throw certain people down in the well, make them put lotion on their skin and skin them alive to my writing about disgustingly graphic things.
I am making a short film that is in pre-production right now and she gives me ideas from time to time.
She has read the first 5 chapters of the horror novel that I am writing and gives me constructive criticism.
She has told me that she feels safe sleeping next to me because if anybody ever broke into the house she knows my brutality on the perp would be quite severe.
I think its healthy to have these kind of feelings and to express them the way I do. I do believe it keeps me from really doing something bad.

I found one of my best friends thru horror movies.
I moved to a new town and none of the people I met liked anything horror related.
I met a chick at poetry night who seemed really cool,so I asked her what her fav movie of all time was........It happened to be one of mine.We started out a friendship by being"scary movie buddies".
Now I will be in her wedding.

i think is a postive thing in my relationship. we like the same movies and he'll watch just about any movie i want as long as its not disney or a chick flick. so i don't have a hard time getting him to watch horror movies w/ me at all. we have been together for a couple years now. my ex bf however was a different story we always fought over movies when we would rent them. he only saw a horror movie if it had a wrestler in it or some one from dawsons creek:rolleyes:

whenever i start dating a new girl, a couple weeks into the relationship i give her the "lake placid test." we watch the movie together and if she sees the humor i keep her around, if she thinks it's stupid i show her the door right then and there. a few weeks later i give her the "evil dead II test." most chicks don't get much further than the "sleepaway camp trilogy test." i can't imagine why.

'Nuff said.

My girl loves horror movies, she also loves Wes Anderson films... which couldn't be anymore odd. All the movies we watch are horror or comedy. I fucking hate actions films, Drama is way too fucking boring.

I never unchain my girlfriend from the cellar long enough to see anything, much less my horror film collection.
ok. I made that part up. The general concensus is I'm probably the nicest, easiest going guy you'd ever meet (unless you spam in the film section here LOL). Then when people hear what I do for the first time (compose music for horror films), it's the usual : "That's you ? No way ! I never would've guessed that in a million years. You're joking, right ?" After some convincing, it's always "Why ?". That part I can't explain so easy. Luckily it hasn't been a problem yet.

Sometimes a horror film comes up that she'll want to watch, some I talk her into and some she refuses to watch.(stuff like Audition)
It's the same with me and the sappy love stories that she likes so much.
Just like Newb said it's give and take.

Well as you all know I love my horror and my gf of 2 and a half years just doesnt get me. I mean she likes horror movies (well she says she does) but its not anything to hardcore horror like Zombie or God Told Me To (she cried during the animal killings in Cannibal Ferox) But she will sit down with me and watch a movie, although last night I dont think she liked Vampyros Lesbos to much. It really doesnt matter to me that shes not into it like I am or anything, I still love her to pieces.

zero effect ..
sometimes my wife is in the mood for them - sometimes she's not ...
it's not an issue.
(then again i dont watch horror exclusively either.)
novakru

I didn't know we were talking exclusively about LOVERS.
I thought it meant "relationship"in the general-mate,family,friends.
So,
Me and the hubby like horror,I am probably more into them though.
I think in the beginning he probably took me out to see Horror more for "grabbing when a scary scene came on"factor.
Too bad for him I never really scared that easy-lol.

What about people that you start to get to know, how it affects their perception of you.......how it affects the rest of the "getting to know" phase of a relationship...

I really don't think it would work out if I went out with someone who hated horrors...........pretty much all I watch. And...........I would probably think they were wussy...........lol :p
I really do like horror, but I must admit that my boyfriend likes it more than I do. I think that is one thing about our relationship...though we have our differences, we do have an awful lot in common. I don't really like alot of the gorey (sp?) stuff...but I must admit I love to be scared! It is very exhilirating....;)

My bitch loves horror, she's gotta - it's all I let her watch...and if she talks outta line about it, I just smack her in her fuckin' mouth for not knowing better, tell her if she ever speaks without being spoken to again that I'll slit her god damned throat, then throw her down and lock her in the basement for a day or two time-out.
Meanwhile, here in reality...My girl actually LOVES horror, not QUITE so much as me, but she gets into it. Actually, our tastes in films overall are very much alike...seldom does one of us want to see something the other won't watch in the first place. We got a lot of things in common I guess, and common ground always has a posetive effect on a relationship, IMO...I dunno, maybe it just saves on argument time?
Of course there's the odd occasion that one of us will wanna watch something the other doesn't...at which point one of us will fuck off onto the playstation or pc, or get our ass into the kitchen for the duration.
As for anyone elses negative impressions on the horror genre causing them to take on a similarly negative impression of me...well, if I ever start caring, I'll let you know...
- B
My wife doesn't care one way or the other - though she occassionally says "not another fucking horror movie!"
What kills me is that she likes to "out" me at formal business parties and dinners and shit - she'll just say - "Oh Richard always drags me to these horror movies that he loves so much" - I just get these blank/icy stare from the old bastards I work with. What's the proper response to these stares (assuming, of course, that you don't have a chainsaw handy?)

My Wife is kinda "relegious" and although she will watch them with me every now and then, she is way to easily scared. Hell, White Noise scared her. She actually screamed twice during the movie. She didn't find it very funny when I told her it was maybe one step above The Little Rascals on the fear level. I even had to walk with her to the bathroom after she saw Darkness Falls!
She hates all movies that has anything to do with Satan, Demons, posession, or depicts the pentigram (such as the menu screen on Doom 3). She has watched a several of them with me (I actually got her to watch the Exorcist with me after 2 years) and they usually mess with her for a few days.
I have a collection of Gargoyles and a few other horror statuettes...which she loathes...on shelves around my desk...and she can't stand to look at them. I finally had to put one (A bust of a female vampire) up because she said it was evil and always staring at her, giving her the creeps.
The really weird thing is, I have evil tattoos covering my back and arms...my whole back from neck to waist to side to side...is nothing but zombies/awaking dead and other depictions of horror and it don't bother her. I have several "Paul Booth" style pieces on me...which, if you know who Paul Booth is...is extremely evil in presentation.
Well, at least when I want peace and quiet away from everyone, all I gotta do is go to my bedroom and put in a horror flick with demons in it and I get 90 minutes of bliss!
Hey, they say opposites attract...That's a good thing right? :D
Definately different from my first wife...who was a Wiccan...Huh?
novakru
07-29-2005, 07:52 AM
I agree that opposites attract-I have almost nothing in common with my husband.I think it also has to do with respect, even though your wife is not totally in-line with what you're into-it sounds like she respects it and vice-versa.That's a great thing to see.
The Exorcist is a movie hard to watch for me and I love 90% of the Horror out there....
Some guy I used to know who claimed he was a christian with"special abilities" thought I was demon-infested.(I was 19,and what 19 year old doesn't like to party? It wasn't wierd!)Which would have been really funny if he hadn't scared the shit outta me by trying to "exorcise" me.
I think he is an executive at the 700 Club now.

I'm cursed with relationships so it really does not matter what people's opinions are, of me.
I do really like someone who also loves horror movies but he doesn't like me apparently. :( He seems to when he's actually around me and says he does like me, but otherwise he doesn't keep in contact much and doesn't seem to want to see me much...I dunno. My local paper just published an article (link (http://www.newsleader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050731/LIFESTYLE/507310301/1024)) that's topical. It's all about horror novelist Elizabeth Massie's relationship with her illustrator S.O. Cortney Skinner. (Kind of a strange mirror to the Sevier County one that just ran on Deena and me.)

Here is my partake on my relationships and my love for horror.
I unfortunately have been in a relationship with a woman that didnt like my obsession with horror. well it made me unhappy and eventually she and I broke up. It fucked up a lot of shit with me because I went months without buying horror and I hardly watched it because of her. Towards the end of our relationship I started buying horror and watching it more and more. However, our break up wasnt over my love for horror. It was because she was/is a bitch and very selfish. hahahaha
So after that experience I promised myself I would never ever be with another woman like that. I let women know up front my love for horror and that I buy it often so dont bitch about it. I pay my bills first and all money I have left I buy horror or metal so accept me or not. :-D Luckily I am in a relationship with a great woman who doesnt care if I watch horror 24/7.
