down and out with a bad back i just had a nice little marathon of watching horror movies and listening to the commentaries. it's a great way to watch movies you've seen a thousand times and make them feel fresh. in order i watched/listened to:
"blair witch" (pretty interesting),
"cabin fever" (there's a bunch on this film, i listened to eli's solo one and found it highly entertaining and informative),
"wrong turn" (just okay, had it's moments),
"sleepaway camp" (pretty good),
"night of the demons" (had some interesting points but mostly the director and producers just tooted their own horns about how great their movie was).
shortly i'm gonna watch/listen to the "cheerleader camp" commentary and if i manage to stay awake i'm gonna check out "final destination 2."
does anyone have any favorite commentaries i should check out? this back injury is sure to have me laid up for a few more days so i could use plenty of suggestions.
thanks
oh and BTW, i've already heard the commentaries on the holy evil dead trilogy which i'm sure many of you would probably recommend.

You should watch "Joy ride" with the casts commentary. ;)
Not informative what so ever, but good insane fun.

Avoid anything by Roger Corman at all costs. Havnt watched a full commentary by him, suffered through about half of Pit and the Pendulum...he was putting me to sleep. He makes damn good movies, but he shouldnt be alowed to comment on 'em:p

Iv never seen a movie ever with commentary, But I should. First one I'll watch is probably Quinton Tarintino flick's, I figuer those should be interesting to listen too. Im gonna keep away from any Ron Howard, imagin how boring he would be :p

any commentary by John Carpenter is informative - he likes to educate people but in an entertaining approachable way.
Kevin Smith commentaries are usually even funnier than the films ..
Sam Raimi/Bruce Campbell commentaries are also extremely funny ..

Then you'll want True Romance SE or From Dusk Til Dawn SE, both of which have the QT commentary. Dusk is QT and Robert Rodriguez together.
Best commentaries I've heard for non-horror: The aforementioned and fellow Jersey boy Kevin Smith. PT Anderson on Boogie Nights does 2 of the best I've ever heard. Wes Anderson for The Royal Tenebaums and The Life Aquatic. Romero on Dawn and Day. Made and Swingers with Favreou and Vaughn, hillarious. Goodfellas, Casino and Gangs of New York with Scorsese and Coppola on The Godfather 1 and 2.

In Army of Darkness: Official Bootleg Edition has a great commentary. Its basically just Raimi and Campbell saying, "Yeah, I don't know what the hell THIS was..."

Be aware that the double DVD does not include the commentary for Swingers, only for Made. You have to get Swingers SE, which is usually only 9.99 at Best Buy anyway.

I don't believe so. I seem to remember hearing he did one for Dressed To Kill on Laser disc, but I am not positive. Of the 4 DVD's from De Palma I own, he doesn't do a commentary track on any.

Here you go:
Le Paradis: Some fans on the forum have bemoaned the fact that you haven't recorded any commentary tracks for the DVD releases of your movies. Even on the Special Editions, with all their bells and whistles, there's no director's commentary. It's a practice so commonplace now, that even on Adam Sandler movies the director provides a commentary! Is there a reason why you've chosen not to do this?
Brian De Palma : I guess it's because it's such a tremendous amount of work. I appreciate it when other directors do it. I was talking to Spielberg about this last night since he's also never done one. He feels that it's because he likes to keep a little of the mystery. I don't have that feeling, my thought is, "God Almighty, I have to sit here and go down memory lane with all this stuff! I don't think I can do this." Maybe later, when I'm sitting on my porch and I'm eighty-two, if I can still remember any of this stuff, I'll do one or two. So, basically it's a time problem, but there are some marvellous ones that are just full of fascinating information, you really have to appreciate them.

Not horror, but it's a great commentary.
'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' with commentary by Hunter S. Thompson.
the author of the book in which the movie is based on.
You can even turn on subtitles, in case you can't understand Hunter's mumblings, it's actually pretty funny for most of it.

I had thought of Resident Evil the first time I saw this thread....I thought it was funny all the way thru also, just Milla's comments stand out imo.

Thanks for the info TheOmen ....strange that super-mainstream Spielberg dont do it...maybe he's trying to be mysterios like Kubrick...I'm sure he wouldnt do it either....

I'm convinced that Evil Dead II is my favorite commentary. SO funny. It's pretty much everyone ripping on Bruce (Bruce himself included) and also ripping on the movie. GREAT commentary.

Just watched/listened to David Skal's commentary for Dracula '31. Mediocre at best, really boring at worst. Most of it was pretty well known stuff anyway.

Is that from the Legacy Collection? 'Cause I was considering watching the Frankenstein commentary from the L.C. but I trust your opinion well enough that if you say it's dry (I figure they'll be similar) than I won't waste my time.

It was from the Legacy collection, but no worries. A different person does the commentary for Frankenstein. I havnt got a chance to listen to it yet, but The Wolf Man legacy collection had a great commentary...Id say check it out, Id think it'd be pretty good.

I really like the commentaries but I hardly ever get around to watching them. Here are some that I've checked out:
The Devil's Rejects - The Moseley/Haig/Moon Zombie track. Very funny, very cool. Crucial if you're into that movie.
Shaun of the Dead - Made it about half way through this one and just decided to watch the regular movie for the 217th time instead. It's that good. May revisit this one eventually.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) -
Very interesting, especially since it's one of my favorite films.

Doug Bradley- Hellraiser #3
