Cafe Painted Over Dead Rat
Australia - A cafe owner who painted over a dead rat rather than pick it up has been fined £12,300.
Acting on a tip off from staff, food safety inspectors in Brisbane, Australia, discovered the rodent stuck to the floor and covered in red paint under the main serving area of Jo's Brasserie.
The rat was just one of a series of finds which also included a giant fungus, other rodents both dead and alive, cockroaches and dinners rescued from bins before being re-served.
Inspectors noted a "distinct musty rodent odour" near the servery, reports the Courier Mail newspaper.
When handing down the fine to owner Theo Morris, Magistrate Ron Kilner said: "It doesn't take an expert to see that the place is in a fairly unhygienic state."
