View Full Version : Asian Horror Movies Remade Into American Films

Anyone as sick as I am of American remakes of old of foreign horror films? Can we not think of a decent plot for ourselves -.-. If I see another Japanese horror cinema rip off I'll scream. Don't get me wrong, some of the remakes are good...but have we no pride...?

the beverly hillbillies, starsky and hutch, the flinstones, the dukes of hazard, ... oh shit i could go on for hours .....
these films are made or are being made and you're upset about american film versions of japanese horror movies ..
of course there is no pride in the US popular film industry .. just big $$$ in the eyes.
by the way .. its not like its a new tradition .. foreign films have been a source of inspiration for as long as i can remember ...
So now the horror films are being mined ..
oh well, how else are the lowest common denominator sad sacks going to get exposure to the foreign films anyway when they wont watch anything with subtitles - let alone letterboxed or black and white.

When I mean remakes I mean everything, old and or foreign movies and shows included. It all pisses me off. And last I heard Tom Cruise's production company or whoever the hell works over or under him bought the rights to the Eye. As for Dark Water...-.-...please say it ain't so T-T.

in many cases i dont feel too bad about it ..
I usually know when its a horror ... we usually ferret out horrors from all over the world because we dont have much to pick from compared to the other genres.
What i like about remakes as far as drama, etc goes is that once i find out its a remake i usually hunt down the origional .. a film i otherwise may have not known existed.

... I take it you have seen no Jap movies then as The Eye is not a Japanese movie!
Tom Cruises Production Company holds the rights to The Eye.
Dark water has already been remade and should be released in 2005

When they remake Ichi the Killer I'm gonna take a cue from Boiling Point and driving a tanker into the production company. You can take away my Ring, you can ruin my Dark Water, but you can never take my Takashi Miike!...at least I hope they can't...

Miike would most probably not transfer well at all ... I was watching Gozu just the other day, great movie, Visitor Q is still my favourite though!

There seems to be a shortage of good Horror movies since the 70's and early 80's.....Think about it....How many sequels are there? Sure, there's something to be said about taking a good idea and running with it, but there comes a point where it's time for something new.......
wufong
11-08-2004, 08:36 PM
the reason you don't see many new ideas is because the producers wont see anyone unless they have been through some sort of film/film production school. where they are pumped so full of the same old ideas and formulas that all original thought that they once had is totaly squashed. sure its important for these people to get educated about the film industry. but there are so many schools an so many people trying to get into these schools that they have turned into nothing more than a money making production line. where some failed hack pumps their student heads full of his ideas of what a good movie is about.

Ichi the Killer wouldn't translate. Period. Not saying it wouldn't translate well, it would not translate at all. Even the name wouldn't work.
A lot of Miike just wouldn't work. Audition wouldn't work because one of the biggest things was the contrast in the girl between the first 90-ish minutes and the last 30. The girl would NOT be that meek if the movie were American. The movie would pretty much fall apart. Hippie censorship groups aside, Visitor Q MIGHT could work, but it would be toned down anyways, and then the point of the movie is gone.
So no. Miike won't be remade, mostly because most of his stuff can't be remade.

Following on from what SHADE started. Is it any different now to what it was like in the 80's. There were some great films made in the 80's in Italy & America but the ideas soon ran dry & all we got were slasher films & a lot of poor zombie & cannibal films ( hell of the living dead/ zombie creeping flesh anyone?)
Anyway WORST REMAKE: it's not horror but the film was fucking horrible.
SYLVESTER STALLONE in GET CARTER.
Just loved that happy ending guys.

An Audition remake? Agh. I honestly hope you're wrong though I'm afraid you might not be -.-. If you're going to make a remake at least give do the original story justice and follow the story. Don't try to make the movie better only to come up short instead.

well, i guess its me but i refuse to consider either of those vile mounds of puke to be zombie movies.
I was hoping for films from people who love the genre, not the ones who draw inspiration from video games ... and dumb down their films to appeal to the little basement dwellers that play them 18 hours a day ...

I derive a great deal of inspiration from video games, but i have some talent and insight to back it up. Read what i have so far of Gloom (http://scaredyet.net/gloom), it was inspired by Quake, with some Doom in there.

I hated the fact that there was so little gore in both films, Milla jolovich kick boxing zombies, no bite scenes either i admit you don t need gore to make a good film but in a zombie film the glop should run in rivers

I have never played any of the RE games, but i have seen enough that the major disappointment in the first movie was that it had zombies, zombie dogs, and the licker, that is it. If you are going to make a movie out of a video game, use more than 2% of the monsters.....

I have to give the RE movies credit. I like them more than the games. The games fail to keep my attention >.>;;. Now Silent Hill on the other hand...not hoping it will become a movie...but should it become a bad one I might have something to bitch about then.

What's your opinion on asian horror? And Hollywood remake's?
I prefere the original
ChEEbA
06-18-2005, 10:48 AM
I think you're gonna get largely the same response across the board here, man...most people are very much behind the originals...I assume you're referring mainly about the "ghost" kinda films that have been under remake mania, as opposed to all kinds of asian horror, so, lets talk about how I feel about those thus far.
The ring for example...a lot of people actually liked the US remake...but when compared, I found that while the USA version had more mood enducing music, and gorier effects...the "silence" of the original, the minimalist use of "gore" by comparison (eg - the bodies just looked more terrified than fucked up) worked to excellent effect for me. The asian version felt more tense all the way through, not to mention, explained the story a lot better.
I haven't seen the original ju-on myself, but apart from some interesting effects, and the fact that it got quite good about 5 minutes before it just ended....I didn't think all that much good about....but, I cannot speak comparatively in this case, so I'll leave it alone.
I think the US film makers rely on different methods to establish atmosphere...and, unfortunately when remaking these asian films, they have not really thus far captured what's made them the weird-out unnerving creepfests that they are.
Closest I've EVER seen to the "feel" of an asian horror would be Lynch's Eraserhead...maybe he should work on one of these remakes, eh?
I don't hate US remakes or anything...however, I've yet to find one that has outdone it's asian predecessor.
Dark water looks promising, however, I've not seen the original.
While talking asian films, here's a few I like -
Uzumaki
Battle Royale
Mister Vampire
Tales of the unusual
Versus
The Returner
...Not all horror, but all worth checking out if you've not yet.
Oh yeah, hi, welcome...all that shit.
ItsAlive75
06-18-2005, 11:08 AM
Cheeba touched on it, but remaking asian horror is hard because you're basically remaking a culture. It's hard to remake the feel of those movies because they're made in accordance to the ideals of that culture. Ju-On deals with the problems with family and the definition of "home" in Japanese culture. In comparison, "The Grudge" is about ghosts.
American audiences don't rely on that as much, most US audiences just want scares to jump out and punch us in the face. That's why its always weird to transfer... except The Ring (I felt) made a great transition to American audiences.
Goog answers! I see we agree on many things. By the way, thanks for the warm welcome

But i waited forever and just decided to go to sleep since i got bored so i see what you mean. oh yeah and if you recomend it to anyone make sure they don't skip to the torture scene because it did that and it didn't get scared then i watched the whole thing and i had to close my eyes at parts that i originally yawned at.

i know it's slow but i would never trade it because it is the only movie that makes me scared as if i was 5 years old. i haven't seen a movie that has done that to me. that doesn't mean i haven't been scared. the scene from wait until dark had me jumping 5 feet in the air. my friend shemica had to cover her mouth because she had just drank pop and the scene happened and the pop came out of her mouth. oh and two scarey video games that genuinly scared me were Resident Evil 4 and Clock Tower 3. The problem with clocktower 3 was it got repetitve fast and having to collect items while being chased was too hard.

i do agree about adding a little more to keep interest but i don't think they should add to much because then you would be used to the scares and by the time the ending happened you would be like "so what" but yes they should have added maybe a few dream sequences of foreshadowing or a jump scene or two just to add something to keep your attention but other than that it's still a brilliant film.

since few people are posting messages on my thread i mention them here. my scariest moments are:
ok now to save this thread you can say your top ten scariest moments or scariest movies.
My scariest movies are:
1. Audition
2. Wait Until Dark
3. Texas Chainsaw massacre
4. The Shining
5. Psycho
6. Misery
7. Cujo
8. When a Stranger Calls
9. Suspiria
10. Halloween
and my moments are:
1: Wait Until Dark: When the movie is almost over and audery hepburn has stabbed alan arkin an can't open the door so she mutters "the window" so you think she's safe and the movie is about to be over, then out of nowhere alan arkin jumps out from a darkened room and leaps onto her. i went six feet in the air and my friend shemica covered her mouth as she spat out pop.
2: Audition: the reason it's lower this time is because it doesn't have a certain scene that's scarier than wait until dark but the whole movie is scarier. The scene i would pick is her vomiting into a bowl and feeding in to the guy she has dismembered.
3: Carrie: i wasn't scared but, only because i listened to the comentary of another movie mention it. but from what i have heard i am putting it here.
4: Misery: she F#!%ing hit his foot with that hammer.
5: The shining: The "here's johhny" moment but only because shelly duvall portrayed fear that transended to the viewer.
6: Cujo: When cujo jumps on the screen on the opposite side you think he will. you think he'll go for the mother but he goes for the window.
7: When a Stranger Calls: When the police say "jill we've traced the call... it's coming from the upstairs phone, we need you to get out of the house as soon as possible." my eyes got as big as carrie's and i had to hold myself as she tried to get across the house unnoticed.
8: Halloween: i want to say two for this one. The moment at the end where you think everything is alright then you see him get straight up. it wouldn't be nearly as scary if he had his back a little arched, the fact that it was completely straight somehow made it creepier. but anyway as he gets up your like, "noooo.. look behind you run!!!!" The other moment is when michael is in the ghost sheet and the girl is like f@#$ you and makes a call and the chase scene music plays as he slowely comes toward her without her knowing scared me because it's kind of like those separation moments except she didn't know he was coming.
9: Freaks: the ending chase scene was one of the most suspenseful hollywood has ever produced.
10: Friday 13th: I hate to put this movie on my list but the opening scene is scary because you can see it through ms. voorhees's eyes and you see the fear of the girl just throwing those boxes trying to stay alive genuinly scared me.

it's the weekend, people are off work, busy with DIY, kids, family, relatives, getting drunk, having a bbq, going shopping and everything else that's done on a weekend....
so yeah wait till later.
