well i just finished Robin Cooks' Invasion last night.

another DVD that was origionally aTV miniseries - but didnt effing say so on the box - as usual.

i havent been burned by that in a long time. There was a scourge of it when video started - distributers hot for cheap but marketable product constantly tried to pass off TV movies as the real thing.

you'd first notice the oversized letters in the opening titles, then the inevitable 'guest star' or 'special guest' appearances.

meaning - no nudity, no swearing, no violence, no grit - and usually - sub par acting.

The other 2 constants are the planned commercial break timeouts and the huge gaps in time and reason.

the latter problem is a very identifiable phenomenon you get with made for TV movies - especially miniseries.

when one episode ends, the next one (origionally next week) begins without continuity - in other words we're supposed to accept that stuff happened between the last time we saw it and the next.

in a real movie you dont get this - there is more of a flow.
you are there for the whole picture so they keep things moving -
any jumps in the story line make more sense ..

but with a TV movie we just accept that 'oh, they sure fixed a lot of problems during the week when we werent watching them'

this ends up looking really bad when its on DVD/video - because we are expecting the story to continue, not jum in these leaps and bounds.

They also have a tendancy to spend a lot of time with non consequential dialogue and skip over scenes that might actually be interesting (due to the small budgets i guess)

i never noticed it before because i havent watched one of these things in years....

anyway - yes - some have decent effects (CGI is cheap now)
and there is the odd decent actor - but for the most part these are still lame shadows compared to feature films ..

and i thing there should be a fucking warning on the box.

Caution : this was a TV movie.

(the Night Stalker and one or two other notable exceptions movies are - of course - exempt from this critique !)

Farscape: The Peacekeepr Wars was actually quite good on dvd, but it was a 2 parter, so it's not like there was a shitload going on.

Had it ended differently, i might have considered Revelations on DVD, but the ending sucked.

I never would have expected it to be commercial free. I thought the one we were supposed to be getting was gouing to be like the sci-fi channel.

i wonder which are worse, made for tv or directly to dvd movies??

anyway. i dunno if this is made for tv or what, but im watching '15minutes.' my mom is watching it and it had deniro in it, so it hought it woudl be ok

but its soo not. basically, theres this 2 russians who are committing murders, arson, etc and getting it all on tape. they end up killing deniro, and a big newsstation paid like $1 million to buy the video tape. the negotiation on the phone, the meeting to exchange the money, the murders, fire, etc.. ALL on video tape.

ugh. so dumb. its not over yet and i so wouldnt be surprised if deniro were to come back from the dead.

Anyways some TV movies are all right, same can be said about mini series. I got the best one ever on DVD which is Angels in America. Which could actual be a long movie or you can watch it by episodes scince its in "Chapters", six in all. Good movie/mini series, Stars Al Pacino, Maril Streep And some other broad I cant remember. Really excellent, Go watch it now!

ROFL

Anyway, made for tv movies almost always suck balls. Sci-fi channel never ceases to piss me off with that crap. I watched Species III just so I could talk shit about it, and believe me, that wasn't difficult. On the other hand... I'm not sure, but I think they played Dog Soldiers as a scifi channel original didn't they?

Dog soldiers is in no way affiliated with sci-fi..l. they just play it. it's the same as when they play john carpenter's movies.
