View Full Version : Why does that happen?

I asked this in another thread, so i figured it would be a good topic on its own. This is about weird-ass conventions they use in movies that when you think about it, they never really make sense, and you are just supposed to accept it.

first off:
if the villain is the spirit of a person killed by fire, and already they are charred extra tasty crispy, why are they always as flammable as dry tissue, and is their one "weakness". not only is it not very original, but it is kind of retarded when you think about it. They are a) already burned and b) already dead. Have you ever tried burning that dried out, carbonized black shit that's left over from a campfire? you cant, can you? because it is a) already burned and, well, you get the picture.

And no, i dont buiy the whole "its thematic" or "Symbolic" excuse. Its bullshit and bad writing. so there :p

next... How come, in every movie that involves aliens (yes, this encompases many of my most favorite titles) do they seem to have the same basic nutritional requirements, as well as breathing requirements? I know there is that theory that only basically Earth-like planets could spawn/support life, but cmon. Would humans really be that nutritious to giant space bugs or man-sized space lizards?

And is english so universally accepted that even people from other planets can speak it?

I think the Simpsons covered that base pretty well in the first treehouse of horror.
"You guys speak english?"
"No, actually we are speaking rigellian, which by an amazing coincidence, is exactly like your language."

Here is one directed specifically at M Night Shymalan (yeah, you asshole). Why the FUCK would an alien race that has a severe NEGATIVE reaction to water, decvide to colonize a planet where 2/3 of its surface is covered by the shit? Christ, all that mankinfd would have needed was for the invasion to happen during El Nino and shit would have been over before it started...

for things to make sense scientifically - even as a 'what if' scenario it would require thought from outside the box.

the money machines that make movies are incapable of that ...

but then again so is 99% of all audiences ..

you think the masses care ? stupid fuckers just want car crashes and blondes with big tits

the trouble with these errors is that they are so strikingly apparant and obvious to the thinker at the movies, who likes to analyse what they're watching, whilst they are watching the film... I'm like this all the time, I pull films to bits in my mind and whilst this is a good thing, it can sometimes degrade my viewing pleasure, because I'm too busy picking up on the wrong things and not enjoying the film like I should be. I have to get myself in the right frame of mind beforehand, so I enjoy the film.

then on the otherhand you have the people who are happy with just sitting in the cinema, motionless and thoughtless untill the film credits roll, and they say to their partner..."like that was a cool movie" lets go home. these are the poeple who the filmmakers like to entertain.

i call them 'the lowest common denominator'

they're just thrilled they could understand it.

when a movie shoots over their heads and they dont understand it they say 'the movie was stupid'

three words for you: hit nail head.

absoluto fucking correctomundo.

Infuriates me when I read reviews or hear people say how'crap' they thought a film was, when their fucking insignificant fucking brain cells, can't even comprehend what they've just watched, and go about slating a film, as they haven't got any capability in understanding what they've just watched.

I was looking at rotten tomatoes yesterday, reading some of the reviews of frailty. most were good, but the few bad ones seemed to be from people who either didnt get it, or seemed pissed off they didnt think of it first.

One dsaid "The picture doesnt knwo its a comedy"

Obviously, that guy doesnt know he's a moron.

Its a good thing i never decided to go into teaching. when she calls me "teacher" and asks if she was a bad girl, i lose it.

It sjust about as basd as when she asked what i would do if she were cloned and she and her cloned tag teamed me. i damnnear went off the road. And i wasnt the one driving.

resuming topic....

this isnt a knock on those that do analyze all the movies they watch, but why should those of us that are tired of analyzing everything in day to day life and want to just slip into a movie not caring why or how it was made and just watching it, be classified as fucktards or lowest common denominator?

Some of us just watch the movie for entertainment aspects only, while I do read online reviews for almost all the movies I see, Ive found more times than not, that those that are getting the big bucks to tell me why I should or should not see a movie 9 times out of 10 lack the skills to write a column better than some of the shit house graffiti Ive read on jobsites.

I feel if the movie is based on facts then yes it should be scrutinized to ensure the integrity of what happened being conveyed in the film. But other than that, who cares how they kill the guy as long as the bastard dies? *granted creativity counts {SAW}* As someone said earlier the big money movie machines are the ones calling the shots, would we rather they just up and said one day "Hmmm it appears our movies lack depth or insight, we need to stop making movies period", would make for an awfully boring evening I think.

With regard to horror, honestly when was the last time you were actually scared by a horror movie? 10? 13 tops? Unless we have the funds to do something about it, all we are doing is beating the proverbial dead horse. Big money movie machines dont give a shit about us, look at the theaters when you go, most of the time they are a glorified day care center full of prepubescent trolls crowding the walkways and entrances, slowing up the lines at the concessions, and usually the same little bastards shooting text messages back and forth and making those annoying tones in the theater while others are trying to get some sort of enjoyment out of their 12-15 dollar raping they took at the ticket stand.

i wouldnt say i analyze the movies i watch ... until after the fact when i'm explaining why i did or didnt like it.
even then it's not that deep an analysis. (the story was good - the acting was good ..etc)

i wouldnt sit there in the theatre breaking it down instead of watching it.

the comments i made were pointedly aimed at the people who criticize a movie because they couldnt understand it ...
thats pretty clear. 'i didnt like the movie - it was stupid - because i didnt understand it'. .. that is my precise issue..

would you criticize any piece of art based on your lack of understanding ? i hope not ...

a smart person would either admit that they aren't prepared intellectually and attempt to learn more about it - or not bother - but certainly not place the blame on the work.

i've heard this pathetic critique applied to more than just film ...
it's like telling people that you're stupid - and damned proud of it.

i understand that there are a lot of films that are enjoyable brain candy - but even then i prefer a level of competancy - otherwise its still going to be impossible for me to enjoy - i cant get past a bad performance.

[i]
As someone said earlier the big money movie machines are the ones calling the shots, would we rather they just up and said one day "Hmmm it appears our movies lack depth or insight, we need to stop making movies period", [/B]

not at all .. because they are calling the shots based on public demand. and that's practically based on a scientific formula.
They are not in the position to take risks.

I've said in about 20 threads now that it is not the fault of 'hollywood' that bad - or mundane films get made - its because of the people who want to see them .. and that itself was a response only to those who blame Hollywood for everything.
its supply and demand - the oldest law of business.

there is no solution .. this is the way its always going to be - and its why i appreciate the odd 'excellent' film here or there that breaks the mold so much more.

back to analyzing a movie ... i have seen a ton of them and i will say that without scrutinizing a film while watching it (i prefer to lose myself in it) some things will jump out - like a particular perfect marriage of music and scene - or a thrilling moment in a performance .. or a spectacular shot (especially the long continuous ones) ...
they get noticed ... but i'm not looking for them .. excellence stands out on its own ..

My point in starting the whole thging was that with some of these things, if you think about them, they just dont make any sense. Sometimes its not really a big deal (sure darkness falls sucked, but it was going to whether she was flammable or not)

But in the case of Signs... I mean really.... Would china invade a country with a sea of battery acid, and every home and building had pipes full of it? I dont think so. That was piss poor writing on his part, and he just expected no one would noptice or care. THAT is disrespect for the audience.

some things are just stupid .. i dont care if its in a movie, or a book or conversation.

if a friend said something glaringly stupid you'd probably tell him so.
imagine if you had to pay $10 for that conversation ..

i do believe that dumb shit writing is an insult as well ... but if the audience doesnt care .. oh well.

unfortunately - like most things - you dont know a movie is bad until you already paid for it ... and there are no refunds on your 90 minutes spent.

Lazy writing - that's why it happens.

Now, nobody wants to watch a movie that's 100% realistic, unless it's a documentary. If I want realism I'll step out of my door. Nobody goes to a horror, fantasy or science fiction movie expecting a science lesson. BUT the story should at least be internally consistent.

and not outlandishly incorrect ...
you cant get involved in a movie if it is glaringly innacurate ..especially when dealing with science ...

but i agree .. that has a threshhold - we're not all Stephen Hawking
