Has anyone seen this movie? Good...bad?

I'm a little iffy on it, overall I would say it's more bad than good.
On the plus side, it has James Woods.
On the minus side, it has a Baldwin brother.
On the plus side, it has Sheryl Lee.
On the minus side, we don't see ENOUGH of her.;)

I actually like this movie. Yes, I do. I am not sure why exactly, because, sure there is more bad then good. But I like James Woods, I can overlook the Baldwin brother and I think the main vampire is cool as hell. He just looks so sinister.

i concur with all this ..
except James Woods has a lot of really bad lines.
i though it was really piss poor writing for a carpenter film.
Cant even blame the novel because the film completely deviated from it.

A little too many groin jokes, I agree.

Good enjoyable movie worth a watch
I have it and have watched it several times:
Sheryl Lee: Very sexy and IMO, was very good in it.
Daniel Baldwin had a few moments, but there were also a few that were rather bad.
James Woods: I liked him in it. Yeah a few to many dick jokes, but he was good at his line delivery and his acting ability shown through some of the weaker spots in it.

not of a fan of his "wood" obsession then?
enjoyable brain dead movie, which is a shame cause carpenter is better than that

i actually wouldnt have cared about the dick jokes had they been funny or appropriate at any time ..
they were just there as a cheap vehicle to make him shocking and crude .. something that could have been handled better with decent writing ..
yeah - carpenter is way better than that ..

Admittedly the writing was pretty weak, but I still had fun.
Of course, I am completely without taste....:p

I gotta say, it is probably my least favorite Carpenter film.
I liked "Ghosts of Mars" much, much more. I thought it was a good meaningless asskicking film.

John Carpenter's 'Vampires' can be summed up in one word: Excellent...a real triumph.

It is not often you find someone who liked Ghosts Of Mars...personally, i thought it was an OK movie. Good fun!

I was geared up to finally sit through "Vampires" last night. TV Guide channel showed that it was coming on sci fi, there was nothing else on so i figured, what the hell, why not?
So i put it on, and it wasnt "John Carpenter's Vampires", it was "John Carpenter's Vampires: Los Muertos" AKA "Straight to video bullshit"
I expected James woods, i got fucking John Bon Jovi....
Who is, btw, an even worse actor than he is a singer.

i thought it was awful in every sense...
a poor update on Assault on Precinct 13 ... that ran out of money before it began - proving once more as well, that ice cube cant carry a film.

Well, 99% of the people that saw "Ghosts of Mars," apparently, didn't like it. But the people who did like it, well, we're just smarter people overall. At least, that's the only way I can explain it. MUAH HA HA HA AHHHH

listening to the commentary - i dont think Carpenter liked it either ..

You know, I love that commentary, but in a warped kind of way, because Carpenter and Henstridge are fighting all the way through it, sometimes playfully, and sometimes not.

species was less bad with repeated viewings - as you learned not to expect decent performances from the normally briliant cast.
uninspired writing - terrible pacing -
which is a shame because it had all the elements of what could have been a super film ..

I hated how the monster could basically 9and literally) pull any weapon she needed out of her ass at the drop of a hat.
Also (this belongs in the howd that happen thred..) I love how the "best and brightest" earth has to offer recieves instructions on how to mix our dna with theirs to make a kid "Okay, dur, lets do it. it couldnt possibly make a super-creature hell bent on taking over our planet, durrrr."

I don't understand it at all...I get such a fine experience out of that movie...
...The closest I can figure is, the people who don't like it are after some kind of "meaningfulness" that the film is not interested in offering. It's a straight action film, about as amoral as an action film gets, so I suppose that's what confuses people. The way the story is laid out, there technically aren't any good guys or bad guys, just groups battling for survival.

naw that wasnt it for me ..
it was the feel of the film .. the villians were goofy - it just didnt have a 'flow' to it ...
i LOVE Con Air for example ... nothing brilliant there - just fun characters ..
i didnt like anyone on Ghosts of Mars.

Dude, the best part of the film is the Martian Leader guy standing on the wall shouting "Yahh! Yahh! Aggaballagallaba! Mallagallballabbahhhh! Yahh!"
Although I have to say, that movie was a waste of Pam Grier. She gets killed so quick! And she's the one with the action film resume!

Well that sort of goes without saying. I used to go out with a chick who looked a lot like Pam Grier. OMG!!!!! She was too much. And she had the, uhm, the "attributes." OMG!!!!! Nice girl. Sweet girl! Until you pissed her off by accident, and then she would turn into Foxy Brown and start kicking ass.

Great film... James Woods is fucking cool in it. But I've liked everything Carpenter has put out (except that shitty Invisible Man movie with Chevy Chase). Sure his new stuff isn't as good as his earlier work I still find it really enjoyable. Great B-Movie fun.

Hmmpf! Yet another Carpenter crap heap! Dreadful film, as most of his have been for the last 16 years or so.
James Woods deserves better.

You too, huh? That is a guilty pleasure of mine (well, I have a lot of those, I like a lot of crap to be honest...heh).
I didn't like Ghosts of Mars either. It bored me. And this is coming from someone that, on occasion, can be embarrassingly easy to entertain. :p

"Con Air" is great stuff. Yes it may be cheesy and over the top...but it plays to those aspects and it's brilliantly made and perfromed. It's not a 'bad' film at all. It's actually a wonderful example of it's kind.
Stuff like "Vampires", "Ghosts of Mars" etc etc are just awful films full stop...there is no guilty pleasure aspect and "Con-Air" is a millions miles away from such efforts.

Do I? Oh...right.
Hysterical.
And it's Steve Buscemi, thanks for the expert and astute input though.
EDIT: And actually why was he a 'pedo' as you put it?
Because he does no harm, of any kind at all, to the child?
I guess that makes most of the population of the World 'pedos' then as most of the people on Earth have also done no harm, of any kind at all, to a child as well.
watch the film more closely next time, THEN treat us to your points.

He wasn't a pedo anyway...he was a serial killer.
The character was meant to have killed over 30 people, wearing somebody's head as a hat. Nothing is mentioned about any offences relating to the underaged, or even pertaining to anything of a sexual nature.
So what? He had a tea party with a little girl...the guy was fucking nuts. You DID, however, see that the little girl was left unassaulted.
I think Buscemi should play Johnny the homicidal maniac (not that it will ever happen)...he had the right presence...

You were supposed to think that the lunatic psycho killer was going to kill the little girl, because he was a lunatic psycho killer, especially when you see him leaving, dazed, with a doll. It was irony, as cheeba said, he was never a pedophile. The irony was that hanging out with a little girl for a while made him decide not to kill again. silly, yes, but hey, it was a bruckheimer movie.

...what I can remember... that scene with the little girl got pedophile undertones...atleast the movie wanted the watcher to believe he was a pedo.....sorry about the name though
