Hey, great news everyone! I just heard a rumor that the company i work for is closing up their nh office (aka, tax free and 10 minutes from home) sept 1rst and moving all operations to our Massachusetts office, AKA, an hour and a half away and horrible taxes. Anyone have a recommendations for how to make a nice cover letter? :D

pray for a good severance ...
if you're lucky you'll get the deal i got..
my last job - we were taken over by another company .. i got my package the day after my son was born (i was supposed to wrrk the next 3 days but i told them to go fuck themselves.
i had 4 weeks holiday pay coming, 4 weeks time in lieu pay, and a severance package of 13 months pay.
I put the entire severance into RRSPS (registered retirement savings plan) and lived off of the 8 weeks severance allowing me to stay home with my new family for 2 months.
I ended up getting my nexy job before i really wanted one (2 interviews - 2 offers .. i turned the 1st one down)
it was perfect - i hope you can get this kind of timing..
just pray that no one sees your posts about work here - from your work ..

Meh... I am very vocal about my views at work, so they no doubt are aware anyway.
Plus, this company usually tracks the yahoo boards.

New Hampshire, the state i live in, has no sales or state income tax, so i get to keeop a great deal of what i make (although between benefits, social security and federal income tax, i lose over 20% of each paycheck...), whereas Massachusets has someof the worst state income and sales tax in the country.
One of the guys here taolked to someone, and they figured it out,, in order to make the same amount of money in Mass as we do here, they would have to give us a $3 an hour raise, which most definately is not going to happen.

so whats the difference between the state and federal taxation?
Vodstok
05-25-2005, 04:31 AM
Federal taxation is from the country as a whole and goes to things like the military, the president, area 51, etc.
State tax stays within the state and gets used for things like roads, state parks, things like

ah right, the Fed tax is similar to our income tax/paye.... pays into the Governments coffers. We have a council tax which is determined atm by the size of house you occupy, which is similar to your State tax, that pays into local councils such roads and stuff.

Wanna hear the funny part?
That whole "Revoltutionary War" thing we had about 230 years ago or so? Supposedly, we were pissed at the english for "taxation without representation".
Now, we have "Taxation without representation".
ironic, eh?
I would like just one halfway decent human being to run for office and actually get elected based on merits rather than talking a good game and convincing a narrow majority that they will represent their interests.

same anoyance here...Blair just got re-elected as PM, labour lost loads of seats in Parliament, throughout the country, his parties policies and keeping to what he says is absolutely atrocious..say one thing do another. For the last eight years it's been like this, and what pissed me of more, the labour candidate where iI live, who retained her seat, spens our local council money on shite, like there's no tomorrow... during the publicity before the elections I must have got 5 or 6 letters from the bitch, complete waste of resources and money, severl hundred thousand people live in my council/borough, wonder how many other people recieved crap in their letter box......and this is just the small end of what she wastes money on.

we do... it's Nation Insurance Contributions. Can't remeber the % figure off the top of my head. These contributions go towards hospitals, doctors and pensions etc. They are going to something usefull now, but the longterm problem here is, currently a portion of my N.I contributions are currently paying the pensions of the current retired Folks. The Uk is experiencing an ever ingreasing aging population, since people are living longer... the government worked out and reckond that within 25/30 years when I'm around 5 years away from my retirement, the aging population will have grown so large, that the younger workers who will pe paying my pention will have dwindled and the government will have to find a way of getting more money to continue paying out state pensions in 30 years time.
I read a while ago that when the pension contributions were set up there were about 33 workers paying a small percentage for each retired persion. in 30 years time it will be more like a 5/1 ratio, so it's easy to see that N.I contributions will increase a lot or something else has to be figured out.
the main problem is that the govenrment rely far to heavily on current workers paying for current pensions, ther is no form of govenment money 'storage' for future pension payouts. So when I retire, there will be a high chance that there is no state pension, and everyone will have to save more during their carrers and save into privat/company pensions schemes.

Same here with social security. Odds are very good that i will never see it in my lifetime, which is fine becaus ei would prefer to be independantly wealthy anyway.
I love how politicians never look past their own terms...

most of em are old gits anyway, and know they'll get massive pensions with perks from the government in a few years.

hey, in your country, do they get to vote themselves raises?
They do here! Isnt that great? They all work for large companies anyway, or are in some other way inpdependantly wealthy, plus they make a quarter million bucks a year, and then they tell us what to do with our pittance...
I swear... Government positions should all be unpaid. No money invloved at all. That way, it would only attract either honest folks, or just power hungry assholes, no greedy ones.

not sure of the specifics, but it is all agreed within govenment, by some elected group of people .... no doubt the MP's getting the rises colaborate in order to get a higher rise. Most of the ones on the top wack get around £70k+ per year anyway.

I buy DVD's online from a site that get round the customs fees in a cheeky way :) they have 4 different options to choose from, dring the purchase process, to evade the customs...
1: Mark customs label with original price and send correctly priced invoice inside.
2: Mark customs label with original price send marked down invoice inside
3: Mark down customs label and send correctly priced invoice inside
4: Mark down customs label and send marked down invoice inside
I choose option 4 everytime :D :D the last order from them came to about £75 / $137 and the package label and invoice said £20 / $36 roflmao :D for 4 DVD's
