View Full Version : Inconsistancy...

Ok, I know that when I was trying to think of movie series I have enjoyed for my other thread, most of what entered my mind for consideration...were films with dissapointing, or not-quite-good enough sequels, seemed it might be an idea to do this too...
So, same deal, but this time with movies that have had sequels that have sucked, or that you were dissapointed by.
N.O.E.S:
I'm not sure a lot of people agree with this, I didnt HATE any of them, but as a series, it sure WAS up and down...I never really liked the fact that Freddy moved in to comedy, although admittedly, I HAVE laughed at his one-liners...cmon, who hasn't?
However, on the whole, I enjoyed 1-3 HEAPS.
The first NOES scared the fuck outta me as a young fellow.., the second one I didn't initially like, but have recently rewatched, and enjoyed it for it's differences and darkness, and the third one has always been my personal favourite, in terms of characters and kills....I mean, the "puppet", that was just fucked up.
However, for me, it went downhill for a bit...4 & 5 were just "ok" to me, I think that "freddys dead" was very enjoyable though...as for new nightmare, it was interesting, but didn't leave that much of an impression.
See, I didn't think they SUCKED, but they WERE "inconsistant"

Tremors...
I enjoyed the first one, and while 2 & 3 were a bit of fun, they just didn't have the "feel" of the first one.
I've yet to sse the prequel, or the series though...
Feel free to discuss.
Agree 100% on Tremors
How about The Exorcist.1 great 2 sucked 3 pretty good
Superman. 1 was good, 2 was better, down hill from there
Aliens. 1 good, 2 better, down hill from there

Yeah, superman 3 & 4 were...I dunno, like completely different.
I knew someone would mention aliens too, I was hugely dissapointed after the first 2 being so good...
I got one more:
Jurassic Park - 1 was good, 2 was roughly as good but seeing the dinos the FIRST time was lost, 3 was just stupid...sucked.

NOES is the best example ..
I really dont care too much for anything other than the 1st, which was an effective fresh horror movie that exploited on our most primal fears .. nightmares ..
Freddy was a mystery ..
Next thing you know someone sees how well the couple of one liners works and the whole series becomes a comedy. a gimmicky comedy.
Over exposure of any villian kills the mystery - familiarity kills the mystery .. we want more more more and ruin it for ourselves ..
every god damn time.

Jaws, Halloween, and The Exorcist (the latter two are on my top 100) all are great movies, and all have sequels that are among the absolute worst movies ever (parts 4, 3, and 2, respectively)

Agreed. Freddy has been turned into a joke. And I hate that, because the first film was a genuinely creepy movie; it worked so well. I like a couple of others in the series (yes, I admit it....I like the first 4 and actually think that three is a more than decent horror flick) but would prefer if there was only the one film.
Exorcist has the most disappointing sequel.....the first film is arguably the scariest film ever made and the others that follow are just outright silly. And I also agree with Jaws and Halloween.
And I will add The Matrix trilogy. The first is one of the best science fiction movies ever made. Matrix Reloaded wasn't bad, but it was a little disappointing. And Matrix Revolutions was more than a little disappointing, the ending wasn't handled well at all, in my opinion. :(

Can't really blame King tho, eh?
I don't think he's been remotely involved with ANY "sequels" to his films...although...could be wrong?

right, like Pet Sematary is one of the best horror films I've ever seen. I enjoyed the sequel...but it sucked as a movie.

Critters.
Now I remember the first one well. That was cool. But I saw the other 3 in the wrong order ( not that it mattered, sucked anyway haha)
Dammit, saw them so long ago can't really remember them.
I will think of some more.

C'mon...of all the shitty sequels out there....you guys GOTTA be able to think of more.
I got one more too - Lethal Weapon.
The first one was great, the second one pretty much on par...the third "ok" but I didn't like it much, and the fourth...y'all KNOW you've done fucked up a movie franchise when you throw Chris Rock into the mix...

Agreed on BHC, although I didn't much like the second one either.
Yeah, almost forgot about the ever-increasing presence of Pesci in LW, but, Chris Rock IMO overshadows even him.
Another:
Les Visiteurs (The visitors)
The first one was freakin' hilarious in every way...I've only seen bits and peices of the sequel, but it had sure lost something along the way, it was like a childrens movie.
Honestly, the USA remake of the first one was funnier than the "sequel".
Of course, I may watch it through to the end one of these days...I could be wrong, but it sure doesn't look like it.

i didnt know there was a sequal, and i still cant get my hands on the french origional. (i quite liked the american version .. i laugh pretty hard at a few parts - the restaurant especially)
how about the flipside ... movies that have better sequals .. there's a challenge.
i can only think of one : Final Destination.
(some might argue Blair Witch)

The highlander films, just to clear it up...I'm still going on the original purpose of the thread here...no way in HELL were any of the sequels CLOSE to being as good as the first.
More: From dusk til dawn, spy kids.

i dunno .. i thought spy kids were reasonably all decent ..
dusk til dawn ... well, when the origional director drops the project after the 1st one ...
i think the ones that are consistent is (usually) when the same director is involved.
has anyone said Batman yet ?
or the Prophecy trilogy . or . etc etc..
Horror is the absolute worst genre for it
1) because the genre itself is rife with fans that want more more more
2) the sequals are usually handed over to hacks in the company. They are compitent enough to grind out 85 minutes of something ... the company figures they'll try to come up with some decent artwork and make money on the rentals.
Rarely are the sequels of this type theatrically released ..
48 HRS...Ist was great, second sucked
Mad Max...1st was good, second was better, third....meh...not to big on Thunderdome.
Die Hard..1st was great, second pretty good, 3rd not so good
Poltergeist ...1st was good, second sucked, I think there was a third...must have sucked.

So did I, I thought Thunderdome was nearly as good as the first one. But neither touches the greatness that is The Road Warrior. One of my favorites.
Oh and since it was mentioned, I have to agree with Highlander. I like the first one quite a bit (Clancy Brown! ;) )But The Quickening is easily one of the worst movies ever made. Which is why I guess they just kind of pretended it didn't exist. :p

Beverly Hills Cop- The first two were good movies and funny as hell, the third one was horrible.
Jaws- The first one was great, the others sucked.
Nightmare on Elm Street- first one was great, there are others in the series that are ok watchable movies and I think New Nightmare was pretty good but as mentioned before in the thread it's the prime example of inconsistancy.
Alien- first one was great, second was good and the rest suck.
Hellraiser- although I don't like any of 'em I think the first was original and overall a pretty good film but the rest of 'em suck.
Friday The 13th- first one was really good and the rest suck.
Halloween- I like all of 'em except Resurrection which was an utter peice of crap but putting what I like aside for a moment and paying attention only to the quality of the films...
The first one is one of if not the best horror movie ever made, the second was pretty good but as for the rest of 'em they quite simply just aren't that good.

John Mctiernan was back at the helm. PLus, who doesnt love bruce, sam and jeremy?
I loved how they played the whole race thing in the movie.they did a good job of making it funny, but also messing with preconcieved notions of how the jokes were going to go.
I always loved the part where Samuel l jackson assumed bruce willis was going to call him a stupid n-word, but he was really going to say asshole:D

i wasnt really a fan of any die hards ... i hadnt learned to tolerate bruce willis at that point.
actually i didnt like him until 6th Sense and Unbreakable ...
then i began to respect him .. (he has developed into something other than his initial Mickey Rourke wannabe persona with his maturity.)
thats one of the things i thought was funny in Sin City .. willis and rourke in the same movie at last (even though they didnt share any scenes)

I admit to liking all three of the Diehard films, I love Bruce Willis. Always found him really likeable. But the third is actually my favorite, even though the first had the best villian I think (I find myself wanting to like any movie Alan Rickman is in for some reason....I hate that Kevin Costner ruined Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves for me  I mean Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman in the same movie, I should have loved it ).
And I just wander all over topic don't I?:o

Ah you didn't like it either. I have a friend (the same friend that happens to like Rawhead Rex *snicker*) who swears that the only reason I can't appreciate that movie is because of my seething, unreasonable hatred of Costner and that if I just gave him a chance....sure....I liked Bull Durham....lol....
And yes I have seen January Man. I have really thought about that movie in awhile, barely remember anything about it. I remember that I thought it was decent. And that it also had Kevin Kline in it. That's about it.

its not earth shaking .. but its pleasant .. i'd say it's worth a viewing ..)
