View Full Version : The Devil's Backbone
I bought this Mexican horror film in the US, and damn it...it's in Spanish! Of all things! Anyway, it lists english as subtitles available, but they won't display on the screen. I have tried two different DVD players. When tried on my 'puter, it indicated that it was not the proper region format. Anyone else ever run into a DVD bought in the US, with English listed as subtitles, and all printing on the case as english, and noted region 1 on the case that won't work.

I liked it quite a bit also. I thought it was a very moving film, very sad. I know several people that didn't like it because it wasn't "scary" enough, but I don't think that was the point of the movie.

I thought it had some pretty okay creepy moments, with the keyhole scene as the highlight. Loved it, even though i knew it was comming.
But you´re right, Jenna. It´s a good story.

I'd have to say it's Guillermo del Toro's best movie, with Blade II coming in a second.

I agree that it is his best. I also love Blade II (I liked it better than the first one myself) and enjoyed Hellboy quite a bit.

I also agree, Blade II was much better than the Original. One of the few cases of a sequal being better that the original

Guillermo Del Toro is an amazing director, Cronos and Devil's Backbone were brilliant takes on the vampire and ghost theme. Hell, even Blade 2 was a sweet sequel. The guy just knows how to bring a lot of humanity into themes where there usually isn't any.

cronos was a great stylish film.
the only thing i didnt like was Ron Pearlman
I know people think he is the shit but i never liked him .. not even in Hellboy.
Foreign directors seem to think he's the cats ass though ..
Jean-Pierre Jeunet a couple of times
del Toro at least 3 times ..
Jean-Jacques Annaud - twice
he must be ideal to work with .

on a diffrent subject, what is 13th child like? Happy, I looked at you DVD colection. See you got suckers in on the killer creature double features too? Cool movies, but I wish they had put move into the transfers.

started it, didnt finish it .. its always a cheap purchase - bargain bin fodder ... and you get what you pay for ..
as much as i saw - it was weakish .. but not as bad as others i've seen.
re the creature features .. the old movies dont have to be that pristine for me .. its like old rock and roll .. it sounds better on vinyl with a few tics and pops for some reason .. forgivable and somehow appropriate..

I like Cronos, but not even as much as Blade II. I certainly didn't connect with it like I did The Devil's Backbone. Course I only watched it the one time, maybe it deserves a second viewing.
