with the recent trend (Grudge and Ring 2) of remakes of JapHorror movies sucking, I wouldn't normally have much faith in this one. BUT, this one has legit starpower, not just people who're popular at the moment. I have faith that even if the script is week, Connely will make it at least decent.

I haven't actually seen Grudge, I was just speaking of general consensus. Ring 2 was just boring, and the scene with the deer was pointless and almost funny

No kidding.
I made a thread HERE (http://horror.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14733) about Ringu and Ringu 2, and why people prefer them over the American remake. Strange, but the people that said that they enjoyed the Japanese films more didn't (or couldn't) really put up a good argument as to why.
I, myself, did enjoy Ju-On very much, but I thought the American version was scarier in many ways. The shower scene and the video scene in The Grudge was much more effective than its Japanese counterpart. However, I did enjoy the structure of Ju-On more.
Let's face it. The Ring and The Grudge are good horror films, and should not be dismissed just based on the fact that they are "remakes".
I am going to give Dark Water a chance. From the looks of it, urgeok will, too. The rest of you can watch Jason pick his nose. :p

i have to add though - that after enjoying the japanese origionals i started buying all of the asian horror films i could find and they are all getting to be extremely samey.
The jerky ghost girl, the wet hair .. the scare tactics ..etc
The american touch actually gives it the slightly different approach thats keeping it a bit fresh for me..
I hope Dark Water is a decent adaptation. The Eye will no doubt be next.

Sorry to get off topic...but just as a sidenote i thought Gothika was perhaps the dumbest "horror" movie I've ever seen. Really bad.

There doesn't have to be a reason why something is horrible. It just is.

dude where have you heard diverse opinions oppinions about the hulk, most people thought that it sucked ass( which it did). and as for the cgi it was absolutly fucking terrible i could do better cgi on my computer.
as for dark water im not going to see in theaters, hell im not even gonna rent it when it comes out( ill wait about 5 weeks and get it for free on MVP). it just looks really stupid to me, im not a big fan of ghost movies( hell im not a fan at all, i fucking hate them).
the grudge and ring movies werent really that good in my own oppinion either, the main reason i didnt like them is there was no fear factor. there wasnt any real scary parts or tension( which ive noticed alot latley in jap remakes). i didnt like the jap versions either for the same reason, i dont really like any jap ghost films. the all have the same features( and basiclty the same plot, with only a few minor differences)

There wasn't any real scary parts or tension? Look, I'll say this; The Grudge wasn't good because it was too disjointed (like the original) and there was barely any dialogue or character development. But to say that it (and The Ring) weren't scary or tense at points is just a ridiculous statement. I thought The Ring remake was incredible.

i NEVER jump at movies - not since i was little - and i've seen hundreds of horror movies.
the Grudge made me jump about 3 times and i knew what was coming each time because i saw the origional.
the 'out of sequence' flow didnt bother me - i had no trouble following it.
for people who couldnt follow the Grudge (or Ju-on) i cant wait to see what they think of the sequel !

Two things...
The first statement, even people who hadn't seen the original could see things coming, because the music gave it all away. Build-up, build-up, build-up... silence... SCARE!
The 'out-of-sequence', gotta tell ya... It was confusing for me. But not as confusing as Ju-On (probably cuz there were more folks in Ju-On). The thing is, did The Grudge really NEED the out-of-sequence narrative?

see ju-on 2 .. it'll make your head fall off then.
re scares - the music always gives it away - but there was always a well timed payoff .. and a lot of genuinely creepy moments ..
i'm not very easy to impress ...
The Eye had a couple of really creepy moments too ...

Scared the poo right outta my pants, into the toilet... toilet flushed itself.

previews ? where did you see previews ?
i get all my asian DVDs at an asian mall near where i used to work ..
they are around 5 for $20 so i just grab anything that looks like a horror film .. i never saw previews on any of this stuff ...
i have to admit i am getting a bit tired of the 'sameness' of the styles and content of these films.
i have 4 or 5 i havent seen yet but I'll take a break from them before i come back to finish those ...
i need something new !

I saw the preview online a bunch of times, probably from its release on DVD here is the US.
I haven't seen Old Boy yet, I know its not horror but I've heard its a big turn from the usual Asian films.

Looks like it's not going to be bad. Hideo Nakata's original was a little weak compared to Ringu, so I guess I shouldn't expect too much.
