Platinum Dunes has officially announced their remake of 1986's The Hitcher, which will be released by Focus Features' genre label, Rogue Pictures.

The deal marks the third remake for Platinum Dunes since it was formed by Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. The company began with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and continued with The Amityville Horror, both of which outgrossed their production costs in their opening weekends.

Directed by Robert Harmon, the original starred C. Thomas Howell as an ordinary teen who picks up the hitchhiker from hell, a role originated by Rutger Hauer. The serial killer torments the youth by implicating him in each of his crimes.

Bay says that the new film will add some twists. One possibility, he suggested, is to make the protagonist female. A writer is expected to be brought on board quickly.

Platinum is down to three finalists for the directing job on a prequel to Texas Chainsaw Massacre at New Line that will trace Leatherface's formative years.
