The Mothman

A Dog Of Flanders.
here, lemme sum it up for you.
This kid is born, his mother dies birthing him, and then his father dies when he is a couple months old.
The kid grows up to about 10 years old. He lives with his grandfather.
He has a Terrier and is very good at drawing.
He meets this girl, and basically falls in love with her. (They are both only like 13 by this time)
The girl and him sneak out, and return the next morning.
He is banned from ever seeing the girl again.
The boy and his grandfather's house catch on fire, and burn some other houses surrounding it.
The grandfather had nothing to do with it, but yet he is blamed for it.
He gets put in jail for a few months.
a year later, his grandfather dies, and the kid is now handed over the meanest bastard in the town. The same guy who randomly blamed his grandfather for the fire.
The kid runs away and tries to live on the streets.
he is starving of hunger, and freezing cold on the snowy streets.
He finds one way that he could make money and maybe survive. He enters a picture that he drew of his Terrier in an art contest. The picture is VERY well done.
by this time you are saying to yourself "This is it, he will finally make a big breakthrough" but you are wrong.
He loses the contest to a shitty Kindergarten-style drawn picture. The picture was drawn by some rich fat kid with no talent.
The kid finally goes to a church with his dog, and asks that god should take his life.
he dies and his dog die together in the church.
at this time he wa about 15.
end of movie.
WTF IS THIS????????????????? the worst movie ever fucking made EVER!

I take it none of you have seen "Gerry" with Matt Damon and Casey Affleck.
An hour plus of walking, sitting, and a combination of two. You'd think with an Affleck and Matt Damon, you'd have some dialogue, or even overacting.
But you can't overact sitting down in the desert, can yah?

Well to be honest, the movie this thread is about doesn't sound that bad to me. I really like downer endings, but then again if the acting is shitty, it doesn't matter what the rest of the movie is like.
Speaking of shitty Affleck movies that you would think should be better, Surviving Christmas is one of the worst movies I've seen in the last year. Absolutely terrible! Watched 45 minutes and turned it off.

Dude, this "Dog of Flanders" movie sounds fucked up. I sometimes like downer movies, too, but I'm not in a mood for that sort of thing at the moment, and this sounds like a high-octane downer.
"Boogie Nights" is effed up too. People were telling me it was funny and so on and so forth, and when I saw it, I felt slimy and drained of energy and awful. I thought it was one of the creepiest things I'd ever seen! Great movie! But not something cheerful.

It's not the worst movie ever, just the worst right now, and that Is THE INCREDIBLES. It's the worst because everybody and their retarded brother love this thing, and it is awful. Only good for those who have never read a comic book in their life, or never seen a good superhero movie. I don't even see how little kids like this thing, it's long, it's boring, and it's annoying.

Loved the score too.
i could never hate a movie mainly because everyone esle likes it.
I have to feel the hate in my guts .. it has to be a film that goes against averything i hold holy in filmmaking.

It's a tear jerker? Hmmm.... I can't say that I've ever seen a movie that actually made me cry (Except Old Yeller when I was reaaly, really young. I was like "Why'd they have to kill the dog?" )
As for other good downer movies, I would point you guys in the direction of Kids, Trainspotting, and Storytelling. All very fucked up. All quite depressing. All excellent movies.
I guess if this is a chick flick that is meant to induce crying then it doesnt sound quite as cool as I initially thought, but if it's not a chick flick and just about a kid with a really shitty life that you keep hoping something good will happen to, but it never does... Then it sounds cool.

trainspotting - i never thought of that movie as a downer despite the subject material because of the way it was presented .. it never got into the heavy handed drama - it managed to stay light no matter what .. i think thats what made it unique ..
i dont like relentless painful dramas if their only reason for existence is to force your emotional hand ... thats just manipulation for the sake of itself.
on the other hand if the emotional impact is a result of brilliant performances with a poignant storyline that is actually meaningful... then i'm all for it.
all of us experience pain and loss in our lives from time to time and while some folks would rather not deal with it on screen (understandable) others take comfort in knowing that their experiences have been shared and understood by someone else 'out there'
cinematic empathy if you will ..

there is no movie that could be as bad as movies they show in rehab!!! rehab movies are so god damn bad. i was all like, we should watch fear and loathing in las vegas so we can learn more of the dangers in drug use. BUT, NNOOOOOOOO! we had to watch some awful movie with keanu "should never have played in dracula" reaves and andy grifith. and lots of horrible slightly christain documentaries on the dangers of marijuana and alcohol. i am like what about the dangers of coke and meth or mushrooms and acid! haha so for real, go to rehab if you want to see some awful movies. i would have killed to see old yeller or even revenge of the zombies. other than that, rehab gets two thumbs up.

throw in requiem for a dream and you have a list of movies i do not like because of various reasons. from the outside they are all good movies in their own, but when you have lived that lifestyle, they are fucking horrible. when you are free of girls having sex for drugs, you don't want to see it in a movie. or trainspotting, i lost a really good friend to heroin, so i hate hearing people say "oh trainspotting is great, i want to shoot up" (not that you are saying that, i have just heard lots of people talk like that)... ummm so yeah, i am not a big fan of the drug lifestyle movies. movie empathy can go either way. like Traffic was a well done movie, but again it fits the category of movies i don't want to watch.
i lived a scarface like lifestyle for a bit... and i think thats the only movie i would ever watch again in that category of drug film.

There are so many movies that I hated it's hard to list them. Titanic is probably at the top of my list. I went two full years without seeing that piece of shit, and then broke my vow and watched it with a friend. TERRIBLE.
Maybe it's because Leo DeCrap-rio was in it or maybe it was because Celine Dion sang the theme. Point is, I can't believe so many people paid to see this movie.

so i admit i went to see it. i did not pay to see it, i was taken by a girl. and i recieved oral sex through the whole movie. but the movie still sucked and it made me angry that all those poplle went to see it because they were all pissed at me for getting a 2 hour blow job marathon, but i think it was worth it. i then went to see it with a friend of mine who i did not plan on getting oral from and held her when she cried. there are 2 sides to this coin.

Traffic and Requiem are two more downers that I really liked. I have always loved Scarface but I dont look at that as the same type of movie. It's more like a kickass action movie than a realistic depressing drama.
urge - re: Trainspotting: I know what you mean. They keep it pretty funny but there's no denying that the subject matter is pretty rough stuff. And it's not all funny, some it's is straight up fucked... Like when the baby dies, or when Ewan McGregor is going through withdrawals. It gets pretty heavy at parts but then quickly lightens it up again. It's a twisted blend to be sure...

I can relate 100%. For a while the movies literally made throw up. Bringing back those kind of memories is not the most pleasant experance. Although I've moved past that... I can take the films for what they are a little better. I enjoy them and think they are excellent films...regardless that I know people who have died, I know people who are killing themselves now.. there's not a lot one can do to save people who just don't want it. You can try and try saving them, no matter how much you love them, how many times you tell them that what they are doing is wrong... it doesn't help. (Although its great to hear you personally have moved on from that, its difficult)
Its almost like watching a documentary at some points and that can be frightening.
Next Try Gummo... my goodness...
I was dating someone else when I saw this..we ended kind of out of the blue so we still talk.. but we were out one night and he said "I still cannot believe you watched Gummo with me". That made me feel warm and fuzzy like I never should about a movie like that.

I agree, urge. I've always loved the books and never thought a decent movie could be made of them. I'm extremely impressed with Peter Jackson and everyone who worked on the films. They made it believable, at least for me. And, of course, it has 3 of my favorite actors - Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellan, and last, but definitely not least, Christopher Lee.

I thought the Rings Trilogy was pretty good, but not nearly as great as the majority of the population. The effects were cool, the villains were cool, but the movies seemed to drag. I didn't think that they needed to be 3 hours apiece at all and Smeegal got annoying about four hours into the series. *Shrug* It was good but not great in my opinion.
