Desensitisation

hey, doing a research project and i need to ask a question to the fans. can audiences still be scared or have we become desensitised? any help appreciated!

I feel that there is always that maybe one movie made a year that can scare the shit out of you. Most of the horror movies (in my opinion) now days are all made the same way. They all follow a similar plot. To me Darkness Falls was scarey and so was Dawn Of The Dead. I don't know if that helped you any, but I tried my best, sorry if it was to no avail.:)

I think different things scare different people. Personally, I wasnt scared by any of the movies that most people say are terrifying [IE: Exorcist, TCM, Dawn of the Dead, Halloween, ect.], but was scared by one most people find stupid, Blair Witch Project. So it depends. Although I just have to laugh at people who get scred by things like Boogyman or Cursed....

I agree with you on the Blair Witch Project man. I think it was so scarey because it was in the woods and you didn't really know what was after them. So I guess you could say that not knowing was the scarey part of that movie.;)

Actually, I was only scred during the last 10-20 minutes....honestly, I hated most of it, boring as hell. But from just before they get to the house until the end...damn, that was great

no way of having any kind of emotion muchless the

That might not be true though, cuz if you're desensitized to violence that doesn't mean you just stare at it blankly.

There's a lot of gory things out there that a lot of people just laugh at.

maybe we aren't entertained anymore if there isn't enough blood or explosions but we still get scared.

anyone recall details to the blues brother movie. They probably destroyed like 200 cop cars and not one of them blew up, they flipped around and piled up but never exploded, these days all those cars would blow up..

I think what vamp said is basicly the case it depends on the individual, different things effect different people in general not just horrror.

for example one person may laugh at a movie that another person is scared to death of.

Poepl do tend to get desensitized to a great number of things these days. We are over-stimulated, we get too much information from too many sources, we get desentsitized because we have been exposed to so much that we lose the ability to feel.

It's why gore, porn, substance abuse, reality tv, and many other things are so prevalent and available these days. 1, the technology exists to make it easily available, 2, the law of supply and demand has created a huge "requirement" for it all.

Okay Vod is staring to get at what I think too, but I think he forgot the biggest 'desensitizer' of all... The nightly NEWS.

When all you see every time you pick up the paper or turn on the news is all the danger we are in at all times. Terror alerts, random killings, missing persons, biological weapons... It's all you hear about all the time. We are bombarded by it. The NEWS forces people to live their lives in fear.

How can you be scared of a fictitious horror movie when we are led to believe that we live in more danger in our day to day lives?

As mentioned in the post about the exorcist, immersion is a big part of what makes horror scary, and what we get these days is not only repetetive shit, it does nothing to involve and immerse the audience. they focuas on glitz and the stars of the movie, when the story and atmosphere should have center-stage.

Plus, as bwind was stating, after 1 week solid of nothing but footage of some assholes killing a couple thousand people over and over and over again a couple of years ago, how scary is a vampire or werewolf?

My favorite guy is the "Party man". I can't stop laughing everytime he talks about partying. He is so scum, there is so many people like him.

I knew it was Cabin Fever, I was wondering which one it was but I know now.

there's another Cabin Fever that came out in 2000 I believe that was about a group of people being trapped in a Cabin after a snow storm.

yeah that's the one, saw it a few years ago, not that good though. The other Cabin Fever is much better.
