I would have to say the Friday series but my favorites that are not on the list are Killer Klowns from Outer Space and The Puppet Master series.

Have to agree its really only a sound effect. Pretty tame.
but then again so is TCM "music".

I didnt know he did that! I love the Red Dragon music he did, most of his stuff is dark with a kinda quirky comedy thrown in, but the Red Dragon Score is truly amazing. Should have put that on here. Hes got a good singing voice too (Nightmare Before Xmas-Jack & Barrel)

The PuppetMaster music should sound good. As a matter of fact any music Richard Band composes should sound good b/c he tends to borrow bits from Bernard Herrman.:D It's all good though.

Mine aren't on the list: Suspiria (Gremlins rock!) Wild Zero because of my Japanese rock heros, Guitar Wolf, and Return of the Living Dead had the Cramps and some other cool rock on it. Though Danny Elfman is awesome and Halloween's soundtrack was pretty groundbreaking.
I think for horror soundtracks Halloween's and Suspiria's are the most outstanding. Suspiria is the only horror movie I've seen where afterwards I was wondering, who did that great music?!

Once upon a time they were credited as The Goblins, but it's just Goblin now.

No I havent heard anything Philips did with Aphex Twin... I like AFX ..fuckin rocks...I have Drukqs and Ventolin-The Remixes..I think they put out a new Album in March something like 20(something) mixes for cash...I think thats the title. Not sure ,What kinda stuff did AFX do with Philips?

No i havent heard it but we talked about it in my Music Synthesis class. My professor said the guy from Aphex (forgot his name) mailed Philip a letter saying "I Want To Work With You" scribbled out in crayon. So philip thought it might be interesting. lol havent heard it tho.

Richard D. James is his name...I was thinking it would be awesome as hell if Elfman, Herrman, Reznor ,and Richard James were to do something together....That would be very interesting.

Looks like we have the same taste in music too soul. You just named my top 2 favorite musicians, along with Herrman and James who rock in their own right as well.

To fuckin cool..not alot of people around here like my music..They listen to country...nothing against it..they work just as hard as any artist..But I could never get into it. I have nothing but admiration for music artist/musicians..just sometimes I cant chill with their sound. YOu know what I mean? I definately like my music loud ...so I have a lot of people "gracing" me with their opinion of my music. hehehehe ....fuck'em all.. :D

im not saying it was the best, but i have to give props to Resident Evil. The sound design was great. That and any movie that manages to fit in NINS Wish has got my respect. Props to Marilym Manson on the sound design.

was so kick ass i had to order the whole damn CD. It goes something like WE are gonna party DIN DIN DIN DIN! LMAO! Love that shit. ALso theme from Nightmare 3 Dream Warriors is phenomenol but Dokken refuses to play that song live anymore cause they sold out. The theme from Friday the 13th Part 6 that Alice Cooper does is still in my car and my girlfriend loves it. Even the 3 year old kid bebops to it. Texas Chainsaw next generation had some cool metal in it when Matty McCanahay was driving aroudn in his truck in the middle of the flick. Trick or Treat had some delicious tunes. THe list goes on and on!

I have to agree with Arioch and say anything by Danny Elfman.
I also loved the score from the original Crow. Can leave out Brad Fidels Terminator score. Also enjoyed the score of resident evil.

My vote's with jaws - simple yet profound - man it puts shivers down my spine just hearing it even without watching the movie.
From a purist's perspective, probably not music though but thought it warranted a mention.

OK - I don't know if I'm going to get shot for this, but I never really pay attention to the music. The only one I know is Halloween and that's just because... I don't know. I guess somewhere along the line the theme song got popularized. I own and religiously watch the entire Nightmare on Elm Street series, and I can honestly say that I haven't a fucking clue about any of the music in any of the movies. I couldn't even swear under oath that there even was any music in any of those movies.

Let the shooting begin....

I am new to this board and anyone who says Halloween's soundtrack is no good is nuts. Simplistic is surely the way to go with horror movies music.
Fear is the most basic feeling so why not go with the most basic music?

I swear to god. I remember in Friday the 13th there was that gay ass shit that wasn't really music. But yea, I didn't even know that there was music in Nightmare. I only remember some of the music that played because the characters were listening to it, like I remember that Johnny Depp was listening to some music and watching a tv show. I couldn't tell you what music he was listening to or what he was watching on tv, though.

I'm listening to Hellraiser Theme right now. I didn't really take notice of the music in the film. Quite nice.

Interesting question about best musical score in a horror film. Some would say the best musical scoring is the one you don't notice, meaning it's seamless within the film.

A film score is not meant to be played without the film, because it should sound 'incomplete', missing it's own spine. Scores that sound good on their own should rather be just an odd discovery.

With that in mind, I would say the musical soundtrack for Alien (Jerry Goldsmith) is the best horror soundtrack I've ever heard. It's so finely integrated with the sound effects (and naturally, the film) that it's really one of the tour de forces of cinema.

Other horror film musical scores I thought were excellent (within the film ::wink::), all very viscerally, evocatively effective, were Halloween (John Carpenter), Psycho (Bernard Herrmann), Poltergeist (Jerry Goldsmith), King Kong (1976) (Jerry Goldsmith), Nightmare on Elm (Charles Bernstein), Gojira (Akira Ifukube) and Evil Dead II (Joseph LoDuca).
