Since people here have not been talking enough about PHANTASM, I thought I would mention it. What a wonderful wonderful film this is! So sparkly fresh and creepy cool, it's enough to make a monster drool. All Hail PHANTASM!

Oh my....I'm so lazy....it's about two orphaned brothers who discover strange goings-on at a local mortuary, which is haunted by some kind of demon--a frightening tall man who they come to know as "The Tall Man" (of course) and who crushes and reanimates dead bodies to use as dwarf slaves. This sinister figure also controls a wicked flying metal ball with spikes sticking out of it whose job it is to impale intruders and drill into their heads so it can suck out their brains. The graphic scene in which the "Silver Sphere" demonstrates what it does freaked lots of people out when this film came out in 1979!

What's it all MEAN? This very dreamlike, surreal film is not designed to make sense, but is very frightening and very funny, too--a good combination for summer popcorn audiences.

PHANTASM also features the groovy Reggie Bannister as the ice-cream-van-driving, guitar-playing friend who gets sucked into the mystery. He has a crazy "What We Gotta Do" speech, about two thirds of the way in. Later in the sequels, he becomes a dwarf-killing, bad-ass mo-fo. PHANTASM also features obsessions with beer drinking, fast cars, and chicks. An extremely quirky, atypical horror film that redefined the genre in many subtle and insidious ways.

BH, I met that actor in your av, Mark Anthony Major, when I was working on "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare" in 1990. He was doing stunt double work for Robert Englund, and was a very charming fellow.

I thought he played a great evil undertaker in PHANTASM II--did you notice that the two undertakers never had a single line of dialogue?

Ohhhhhhh I wanted one of those so bad!!! I used to drool over it at the laserdisc stores. Ended up getting the cheaper version.

I do have the "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things" laserdisc signed by Alan Ormsby and Bob Clark...you've probably got one of those in your fortress of movies too!

that was the first thing we ever talked about when you joined the board.
i have the laser but it isnt signed.

the other signed one i have is the hellraiser boxset - it has a Clive Barker handsigned script inside.

i think its limited to 2000 as well.

another reason laserdiscs were so damn cool... you wont get that shit with DVD

kpro ... would find this interesting .. there is another boxset .. Ghettysburg or something like that - that came with an authentic spent shell. which leaves me to wonder if its ghesttysburg because they used round shot in that war ..i think.
anyway - it was pretty cool whatever it was.,..

Bob Clark...didn't he do Porky"s?

filmmaker2

Yes, as a matter of fact, he did do "Porky's," and "Dead Things" was his first feature film.

As far as laserdiscs, Urge...that's right, I remember that conversation! It was such a good time when lasers were out. Nowadays I might say, "Well, better the smaller disc, the big disc was quite a lot of plastic to consume," but I enjoyed them when they were around. Get it, "around?"

I have a gorgeous laser of "Palm Springs Weekend" that is so clear and bright I think it'll crack my TV screen...

that's probably hard as hell to find, I've only got one signed movie collectable it isn't horror though- Caddyshack signed by Bill Murray, I actually met him here in New Orleans he was promoting Lost in Translation at a book store in the French Quarter at least I think that's what he was doing because he hadn't written a book.

yeah he said she was a Princess and he said something about being in something with Jimmy Stewart but no matter what he said I couldn't think of who she was but I knew I had heard the name before and I just realized that it was in that movie Milk Money with Ed Harris and Melanie Griffith.

my dad was the same way, he always used to watch old movies like Gone with the Wind and Rear Window ect ect. and I'd watch 'em with him asking a bunch of questions because I was really young and only knew people like Arnold(God knows how to spell his last name), Eddie Murphy ect ect.

my dad actually wanted to name me Clint Joe(Clint Eastwood and the character he played in The Good,The Bad and The Ugly) but my mom wouldn't let him, I personally think it would've been cool.

Well when I was in school.........there were just a bunch of Heathers and Cheryls...........Ingrid was kind of weird as a name, although there was always at least one other one, living in a German neighbourhood.

This is the "Phantasm" thread, right? Jeez, we get lost in the woods so much around here.....!

By the way, a long time ago when I got the "Phantasm" laserdisc, I was pleased to find there were all kinds of deleted scenes and things (there's even more on the DVD now). The scenes didn't fit into the film and I could understand why they never made it into the edit.

But I made my own short version of "Phantasm" featuring all the deleted scenes, and also added rap music (just for fun) and some scenes from "Star Wars" so that when Mike gets sucked into the spacegate, he sees that the dwarves are actually Jawas and they are selling robots on the Tall Man's planet.

Was this the thing on "blood-red vinyl"? (Count Floyd would like that!) I think this recording is tucked away in the DVD special features, along with pics of the record...

You know, back in the day, I fondly remember this movie scaring the whole neighborhood in its theatrical run...
