We'll start it off with scary looking sea creatures:

my sister (the one in the movie industry) was/is a dive master - in the Grand Caymans she took tourists to a reef where they could snorkle .. and watch her wrap a moray eel around her neck like a scarf and feed it. (they kind of got a bad rap in The Deep)
terrible eyesight - it would oftn miss the food she was feeding it and it would mistakenly bite her hand. (she has a few scars)
i'll go with the squid ....
no money on earth would get me to wrap one of those buggers around my neck.
theys good eatin though

I saw a thing on tv once where a guy got grabbed by 2 Humboldts. YThey dragged him down about 60 feet, at night, then let him go. They stole a couple of his pieces of equipment...
he said he was scared that they might bite him because he had seen one attack a thresher shark once and the squid bit a chunk the size of an orange out of it's head

Rent or buy the recent "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" Disney DVD, there is a documentary on the Humboldt Squid. And it depicts these things as positively dangerous and easily lethal!
There is also some amazing footage of these things swimming around in groups. These squid are SELF-LUMINOUS--they flash on and off rapidly while swimming, and they are BRIGHT AS HELL. You won't believe it until you see it. I had no idea these animals lit up, but on this video, you can see many of them doing it. I've seen glowing fish before, but this is too much.

Wow, 4-3 for the eel, but it hasnt won yet.
I saw a thing recently where they were checking the claims that humboldts are super aggressive. it turns out, they are when they are being fished for. On a day to day basis, they are acytually very intelligent and calm, but when people start hooking tham and yanking them out of the water, they go psycho.
They dont actually glow (although quite a few species do), they change from white to red very quickly, which in low light may as well be glowing.
Oddly enough, Giant squid DO have bioluminescence (the same thing that makes fireflies glow)
I did a paper on it in high school.

Some great material on the Humboldt Squid can be found here--this was written by the researcher who was interviewed for the Disney documentary. It features an amazing photo of the effect I was describing:

In my opinion, the squid would look cooler, and according to Mr. Cassell's observations, would probably get in at least a few licks on that ole eel...

A Sargassum Fish

http://www.ticam.utexas.edu/~pgm/diving/pics/cuttlefish.jpg
Fyis to help with your decisions. Sargassum fish have details that make them look EXACTLY like the Sargasso Seaweed they live in (they are related to Angler FIsh)
Cuttlefish have Chromatophors, which are skin cells fille dwith color that are directly linked to their brain. they can change into color patterns more complex than a human can create, and can even change their skin texture to mimic their background. They are also at least as smart as a dog.

Not only has the cuttlefish got the ability to camouflage by colour almost instantly, it can do so over multiple textures and surfaces, while moving.
Also, there is NO better mimic than the cuttlefish....well, not in the sea anyway.
Stick insects and those thorn shaped moths/bugs that look like leaves n shit would probably be a close second, but none of them are remotely as "versatile"...
This thing can immitate other fish in motion ,for fucks sake.

I have huge families of lorikeets (or rainbow lorikeets as they're called here) right near my place...alot of trees where I live.

You know, contrary to popular belief, alligators and crocodiles are not really meat eaters. They are vegetarians, really, and are generally friendly, like domesticated cats. Next time you see one, try going over to it and petting it, you will be surprised how friendly they are. Or better still, the next time you see one, throw rocks at it--they love that!

She even had toy dinosaurs that she took with her everywhere she went...When we were in New York, she took all of our pillows in our hotel room, stuck them in the dresser drawers, and laid her dinosaurs on them so they could 'sleep'...She was only 4 then :)

you probably knew this, but im feeling like an ass. Prawns and shrimp are the same thing. the words can be use dinterchangeably, but prawn is usually used in reference to certain sizes and species.

Prawns and shrimp are the same thing
Can't REALLY argue with that. Yeah, it's mainly about sizing and breeding. But yeah, what you'd call a "prawn" here is easily much much bigger than the shrimp. (I think scampi technically comes from the same family too) Yup, we get pretty good 'uns here.
Yeah, I've heard all about the crawfish thing in the south, I was thinking about making the gumbo recipe that came with my dvd copy of "skelaton key"...could anyone tell me how that one rates?
Vodstok
08-14-2006, 07:25 AM
Havent read it som i can comment on it, but one point ot remember with gumbo (i screwed this up huge in the past)
Make the rice sperately from the gumbo and pour the gumbo over it. if you do them in the same pot, you end up with a nasty pasty mess.
Phalanx
08-14-2006, 08:41 AM
ha, I can imagine...
Back to the shellfish thing...it's funny (probably just me) but I've had marron, scampi, lobster, blue swimmer crab, mud crab spanner crab, and a few other shellfish here and there...yet to me, nothing comes close to prawns.
Preferably tiger or king variety (I dunno what you'd call the same thing over there)...but yeah, as stupidly expensive as shellfish can get, I just fine myself thinking it's overrated.
Prawns are great.
However, in terms of fish...the opposite. I like most fish, but I have to say that when you get into the tuna/salmon/swordfish proce range, it gets better.
As for uni/bi/valve moluscs, they're all much the same to me - Although abalone is quite brilliant and IMO just about worth the price, if you can bring yourself to buy it.
