View Full Version : Charlie and the chocolate factory
The Mothman

there is supposed to be a remake of charlie and the chocolate factory coming out soon. it is going to be nothing like the old one. In this one, when the greedy little kids do wrong, BAD things happen. the oompa loompas are supposed to murder them or something. This is what I heard at least. It's going to have Jonny Depp as Willy Wonka.

Johnny Depp will be playing Willie Wonka,Tim Burton is directing and this version is supposed to be closer in tone to the original novel, which is quite dark and this one is NOT a musical.

he is in dire need of redemption after his last 2 outings ... my fingers are crossed.
I kind of hope it isnt too dark though .. i'd like to be able to take my kid to it...god knows we both watched the origional together a million times

Wow, Johnny Depp in a Tim Burton movie. That has never been done before...
I'm sorry, but Johnny Depp will make a horrible Willie Wonka

I'm a big Burton fan myself, but I have to agree that Big Fish was his 2nd-worst movie behind Planet of the Apes. But I also think Corpse Bride will redeem him somewhat, and Wonka may bring him back full force. He probly got a bit miffed when everyone was saying that he had lost his touch when he made Big Fish.
And I also don't think Depp would make too bad of a Wonka. Have you seen Benny & Joon? He's pretty Wonka'd-out in that one.

he'd make a great wonka...but its damn near impossible to recreate or capture a classic performance....i guess this movie is moreso for those who never saw the original to enjoy...my views are way tainted...i'll do my best though..

i actually thought Depp was a natural choice as well ..
big fish wasnt a bad movie ... for a Ron Howard film ..
but planet of the apes was unwatchable ..
i love everything Burton did up to Planet .. and after big fish i was in mourning .. anyone can make a film like that ...
but there are precious few directors that show the vision and daring burton showed in his earlier films.
I need Burton to make the films no one else can ...

I have total confidence that johnny depp will make an excellent wonka:D

I'm a Ed Wood Follower.... Every year we get ED WOODSTOCK here in Sacramento. They have great bands (next year hopefully mine) and they play a lot of Ed's movies.

They should've just named it "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" instead of getting all the shit from a remake...that way they can do whatever to it and it wouldnt fuck up the original..

The book's content is certainly not horror, but what makes it scary is that Roald Dahl wrote it. All of his stories have a dark side, even in the midst of all the playfulness. That's why I think the pairing of Burton and Dahl's work is going to be good. They both have a way of blending horror with that just-enough hint of childish innocence.
I think the original really nailed that insinuated, subtle, dark side of Dahl's work (although I could have done without most of the songs). What I'm saying, I guess, is that you have to go into the story of the Chocolate Factory within the context of the rest of Dahl's work in order to really be looking for, and finding, that darker side.
It's kinda like that book "Hollywood Babylon". To the surface reader, it's just a pulpy, tabloid-esque, book about different scandals during the Golden Age of Hollywood. But when you know the author, Kenneth Anger, the entire book takes on a sinister foreboding tone, which makes it a classic.

Agreed. It's gonna be a dark film, but then again EVERYTHING Burton makes is dark. I dooooon't think there's going to be children being murdered in this movie as the original post claimed. Johnny Depp is perfect for this role though, he's got that perfect blend of dark atmosphere and comic tone. Good stuff.

They were actually going to cast Marilyn Manson to play Willy Wonka, but for some reason Johnny Depp was casted instead, he will work very well with Tim Burton for this movie, as they did in Edward Scissorhands. Rumour has it Marilyn Manson really wanted the part as well.
One of his songs/video clips is a take off of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:confused:

I'm not sure if that's true or not but if it is I think Johnny Depp most likely got the part because he has something that manson doesn't...the ability to act.

I claim Tim Burton authority here.
Manson was intially set to play Wonka, but due to musical obligations (remember his music?) he was unable to play the role. Johnny signed on, but put it in his contract that if Manson changed his mind, he would happily step aside and let him take over. Obviously, that never happened.
Tim Burton (one of the best directors, EVER) should not be remembered for Planet of the Apes, Mars Attacks or Big Fish, IMO. Please note his remarkable work on Sleepy Hollow, Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, Batman 1 & 2, Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton work wonderfully together and the commercials for Willy Wonka look spectactular.

The commercials are starting to show a bit more now as it's getting closer to the release date and I must say that everytime I see a new one it just looks weirder and weirder, and I don't mean that in a good way.

Jhonny Depp will make a brilliant Willy Wonka: the bloke's just got that auora of weirdness that is essential for the part of Willy Wonka.
And Tim Burton directing: Oh yes! Depp and Burton make a super team. Hell, you just have to look a Edward Scissor Hands for prove.
