View Full Version : Songs that make you sad?

Is there any song that just makes you sad when you hear it? Mine are:

Heaven - Brian Adams
Dust in the Wind - Kansas

Those two because of memories associated with them.

What Went Wrong - Blink 182

Because it makes me think, mostly thoughts like the name of the song...

The Chair by George Strait
Beast of Burden by The Rolling Stones......most songs that make me sad are associated with something that happened in my life.

I never really got in to Evanescence, but My Immortal has been really getting to me lately. I guess I "feel" it now.:(

Warmness on the Soul by Avenged Sevenfold......

Everybody Hurts is the most depressing song ever.......One listen would make the most stable person suicidal......Horrible Horrible song.....

I also used to listen to Hurt by NIN when I was really depressed at one point in my life........Although it made me feel better rather than sad....

cat's in the cradle - by harry chapin.

its sad because it's true ..

so many fathers out trying to become super corporate-boy because they dig the 'perceived power'
only to find 20 years later that they missed out on their kids childhood and the kid doesnt give a shit anymore.

and when you are a retired nobody - who's gonna be there for you ?

Type o negative bloody kisses, yet so sad yet so awesome.

Not long ago but far away
A rainy winter’s day
All her pain she kept inside
Could no longer hide
No cry for help
She killed herself
Both life & love could not be saved
She took them both to the grave

A pair of souls become undone
Where were two now one
Devided by this wall of death
I soon will join you yet
With my blood I’ll find your love
You found the strength to end you life
As you did so shall i

Oh no
Please don’t go
It’s like a death in the family

A crimson pool so warm & deep
Lulls me to an endless sleep
Your hand in mine - I will be brave
Take me from this earth
An endless night - this, the end of my life
From the dark I feel your lips
And I taste your bloody kiss

Oh no
Please don’t go
It’s like a death in the family

Don’t die on me

Ok, aside from what the "meaning" may or may not have actually been, as a CHILD, before I ever considered anything other than the obvious side of the lyrical content, "Puff the magic Dragon", specifically the end made me kinda sad.

"A dragon lives forever,
But not little girls and boys.
Painted wings and giant rings
Make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened,
Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon,
He ceased his fearless roar.
His head now bent in sorrow,
Green scales fell like rain,
And Puff no longer went to play
Along that cheery lane.
Without his life-long friend,
He could not be brave,
So Puff that mighty dragon
Sadly slipped into his cave"

- Kinda suckful ending for a cool song...I remember thinking about it a bit as a young child, maybe 4 or 5, and to me, apart from the sad end to the story, about as "deep" as it got was me thinking it was just about the death of stuff being special...it was kinda depressing.

Nowdays, nothing...I'll pick up sadness IN songs, but I am not longer saddened by anything musical

you should see some of the kids books we end up with ...
they make you want to bawl while you're reading them to your kid ..

one in particular called 'i'll love you forever'
another one called 'the giving tree'

and yeah .. they are all about loss.

Angel's Wings by Social D

~~How many times have you asked yourself, "is this the hand of fate now that I've been dealt?" You're so disillusioned, this can't be real. And you can't stand now the way you feel.

And when you're down on your luck, hey baby it's a long, long way up...hold back now, hold back your fears. And when you're really down and out, and you feel like there's no way out now, let go now, let go of your tears some more.

And now my biggest challenge, a thing called love. I guess I'm not as tough as I thought I was.

I don't care about what they say, I'm gonna marry you some day. Go ahead and wake up, it's a brand new day. Angel's wings gonna carry us away.~~

Kinda make's me sad and happy all the same.

was listening to Burt Bacharat at work today - and was suprised at how melancholy one song was ..Planes and Boats and Trains..

Trains and bloats and planes are passing by
They mean a trip to Paris or Rome
For someone else but not for me
The trains and the boats and planes
Took you away, away from me

We were so in love and high above
We had a star to wish upon
Wish and dreams come true, but not for me
The trains and the boats and planes
Took you away, away from me

You are from another part of the world
You had to go back awhile and then
You said you soon would return again
I’m waiting here like I promised to
I’m waiting here, but where are you

Oh...oh...trains and boats and planes took you away
But every time I see him I pray
And if my prayer can cross the sea
The trains and the boats and planes
Will bring back you back, back home to me,

oh god yes - its a remake ... i cant remember the origional - it was from when i was a kid ..

there was a slate of these kind of songs a long time ago - it became a genre unto itself ..
Teen angel was one - and there were others ..which is why i could never take it seriously.

that and i hate Vedders voice with a passion...

Well,...from MY perspective...it was a nice change to a lot of the music today, and since it's not among many others, I guess it didn't seem so bad, it was just some heartfelt sounding shit, and kinda like a messed up tragic love story...worked for me, so yknow...

Teen angel? I never heard that....EARTH angel I heard...

yeah teen angel, these are oldies ..

50's punks with hearts of gold getting in drag racing crashes and missing their girlfriends from heaven - that kind of thing.

whatever we find sad is usually because it hits a particular button with us .... for me its anything to do with kids ...

i cant even listen to that Eric Clapton song - the one he wrote after his kid died. Its not even a good song - but all i can think of is someone losing a child.

its a blessing and a curse having a kid ... the curse part being : you want the power to save every other child of the planet from experiencing anything bad - once you hold them in your arms and see how dependant and trusting they are.

so yeah - i'm a suck.

Your probably talking about" Tears in Heaven"...but he does one thats even sadder than that called "When The Circus Left Town". Aparently he took his kid to a circus just before he died and this song is about that.

re: the Teen Angel thing...

That was some obscure late 50s singer named Mark Dinning who never had another hit again. He was kinda like Fabian and Frankie Avalon

Another golden-oldie-death-rock number is "Take Good Care of my Baby" all about the teenager who dies and requests that they take good care of his baby until she eventually dies and meets him in Heaven.

Ahhh...the 50s....so idealistic and cautiously optimistic!
