View Full Version : Great Idea: Bad Movie

This is sort of along the lines of the "Guilty pleasure" threads. There are movies out there that have a great concept, or have parts that are absolute genius, but they are tied to a basically bullshit movie.
My example:
Virtuosity. I like denzel Washington, a lot. I like Russel Crowe.
I always loved how they handled the idea of a sentient program, and how he was able to get out of a computer into the real world (no lame-ass lawnmower man shit...)
Thge ideas and the description of the technology was way ahead of it's time. The problem was, it basically becomes a silly sci-fi action cop movie. now dont get me wrong, i even own the soundtrack to this movie, it is one of my all time favorites, but it has several fatal flaws that prevent it from having wide appeal.
Plus, it had kelly lynch.

i actually never minded that film .. i just thought it was a weird vehicle for Denzel.
Coppola's Dracula probably looked good on paper too ..
I've never seen a worse collection of more unappealing leads in one movie. (yes - in this case I'm including Oldman - i thought he looked like a weasle)

I've never seen it (the wife HATES Kate beckinwhatever), but judging by what i have heard, that is one of the greatest single-word answers ever. :) So little can say so much.
Van Helsing
Could have been a good movie...if it wasn't made out to be like a pre-teen hero movie. Puke.

Hollow Man, it could have been good but it failed.

Every movie that has ever depicted Fairy Tales...I love the idea of twisting fairy tales, and taking them back to the 'darkness' that they originally possessed...But, the way that they have been done has truly sucked...Snow White was the only one that was even HALFWAY decent...
*Hmm...Thinking about pulling up old 'Twisted Fairy Tales' thread for some fresh new ideas*

I remember going on a violent rampage of words after I saw Unbreakable about how utterly pointless it was. I've never forgiven M. Night for that horrible use of celluloid and my time....but that movie could have been really, really cool.
I have finally found a movie that, while not quite surpassing Unbreakable's utter lack of a point, it has most definetly matched it. The Village. I finally watched it tonight. It could have been good....really really really good. But ever since 6th Sense, Shyamalan has been trying to re-create it with 'twist endings' that surprise everyone. Not only did this movie not suprise me, it simply did not have a point. I may never trust M. Night Shyamalan with my use of 2 hours ever again
anyway....enough about movies that I hate.
Cherry Falls is really a pretty bad movie, but it is a big guilty pleasure of mine, along with Valentine, Scream, IKWYDLS, and the subsequent sequals.

But WHAT IS THE POINT?
I loved it up until the ending. I love Bruce, I love Sam.
I cant even explain what I mean by saying it doesnt have a point, but its just the only words to describe it. Then ending was cute with the whole terrorist thing...but there just was no point, nothing changed during the movie.

not sure what you mean by a point either ...
to me it was just a ballsy take on the comic book fascination .. as if they could actually be based on reality.
i loved the slow pacing ... and i absolutely loved the ending ... how the climax was tragic (the music) as opposed to the regular action movie it could have been ... all flashy - pro american go get 'em - like the other super hero movies .. this one really stood the action film on its ear .. somehow taking an action movie and making it a powerful drama ... and . i dont even like Bruce !

Wes Craven's Chiller. That has a great premise, a guy is accidenatally returned to life from cryogenic sleep, yet is pure evil because his soul was not brought back. I think thats a great plot, but holy shit that movie sucked balls

i actually liked underworld and van hellsing. LOL, well not for their horror. but the action and outfits were fun, some of the surprises were neat too
lets see darkness falls, white noise, snow white (horror version, i thought it was horrrrrrible), princess bride (pretty good, but the chick was ugly, and there was a few other things that displeased me), hmm thats all i can think of for now

Gotta agree that Underworld sounded great on paper.
I just hate when I hear people say, "Oh that Freddy vs Jason movie was so bad, it sounded like it was gonna be awesome!" What?!?! Any movie that uses A vs B in it is the most uncreative load of garbage.
EXAMPLE: Alien vs Predator

ehh, i think it coulda been good. i mean ok slightly unoriginal yeh but come on, 2 horror icons dukin it out
but fuck... it was so lame. well freddy had some kick ass lines but still
and alien v predator? didnt see that one. would like to see it though, if they could have some kick ass actions sequences that didnt look all CG and overdone.
but odds are, it was.
edit: god damnit, i forgot to do it in my foreign speak.

Oh, I'm totally not denying the fact that 2 horror icons goin balls to brass on screen isn't cool, it's jsut so unoriginal and a waste of production money. It's like they came up with the idea when they couldn't find a match to burn up a pile of money.
Save yourself the trouble, don't get AvP. Just go out and spend 20 bucks on a t-shirt or something.

you all came up with very good ones like underworld unbreakable and such but the only one i can think of is white noise. I didnt like it at all. I guess i am trying to say it is completely opposite of good meaning but bad movie. It was completely horrible just as bad as the ring. and badly written.
