I have always been a fan of KingKong and I have seen all but 2 of KingKong movies. The 1st KingKong movie was made in 1933 by RKO. The 2nd Kong movie was made in 1938 and it is a very old and almost unknown movie. The title is KingKong appears on Edo. Edo is an island and this 1938 Kong movie was made in Japan. What makes this movie intersting is that it is the 1s giant monster movie to use suitmation a.k.a. Man in suit movie. Suit maker Toshinori Ohashi a.k.a.actor Sanshiro Sagara. Toshinori is considerd the father of Japanese suitmaking. Toshinoris friend Teizo Toshimitsu who designed the Godzilla suit years later in 1954 helped Ohashi make his Kong suit. Sanshiro sagara wore the Kong suit he designed in the 1938 movie this would not happen again until 1976 when Rick Baker would wear the KingKong suit he designed for the 1976 Kong movie. The 3rd Kong movie was also made in Japan produced by Toho studios titled KingKong vs. Godzilla 1962 then Toho made KingKong Escapes 1967. Then the remake of KingKong in 76 and its sequel KingKong Lives in 86. Thats the list of all KingKong movies except for KingKong 2005 being directed by Peter Jackson life long Kong fan himself. I did not mention Son of Kong because it is not KingKong. Years KIng Kong movies were made
1933 USA RKO
1938 Japan
1962 Japan Toho
1967 Japan Toho
1976
1986
2005
The 2 KingKong movies I have not seen are 1938 KingKong Appears on Edo and KingKong 2005 because it has not been released yet. I plan on seen it.

Okay, Goji, you done surprised me! "King Kong Appears On Edo," huh? 1938???????????

Well, I checked it out, and though it looks like no one now living has seen it, the film does appear to be real.

That's totally amazing. Absolutely jaw-droppingly amazing.

If you have any stills from this film, or anything, please post 'em, I'm sure a lot of people would like to see 'em.

Hi Filmmaker pics from KingKong Appears on Edo are just about impossible to locate. The people who know about the movie and who made it etc. are your best sources for info about that very rare almost forgotten movie. Which is infact the 2nd movie about Kingkong. If I can find something I will let you know.

Well dont forget other Kong like movies Mighty Joe Young 1949 Konga 1961. There was a Korean movie about a giant hairy Kong like monster that had a horn on its head called Wangmagwi in 1967 the same year Korea had made Yongary monster from the deep.

The Mighty Joe Young remake was good

I might go check MJY remake out and see how it is compared to the 1949 MJY movie.

Just read an new interview with Ray Harryhausen. He gives the impression he didn't care much for the original movie and is looking forward to Jackson's remake. He felt the original left out the fantasy aspect of the story. Of course Peter Jackson is going to probably lay the fantasy on pretty thick. Which is OK by me.:)

LOL thats funny RedDragon Harryhausen saying he felt they left out the fantasy aspect in the 1933 movie LOL what do you call Dinosaurs in KingKong 1933 REALITY LOL. If there is anything wrong about the original 1933 classic KingKong movie it would be how Kong is seen to be diffrent sizes in the movie. Example Kong is 50 ft tall which is fine and dandy but the scene when Kong fights Tyrannosarus Rex looks great except that T-Rex is 20 ft tall not 50 ft so either Kong shrank 30 ft or T-Rex grew 30 ft. Thats the 1st mistake the 2nd mistake in the movie is when you see Kong chained up in a theatre again this seen looks awesome Except How do you fit a 50 ft tall Gorilla in a theatre? I hope Peter Jacksons movie wont have these mistakes in his new movie. I dont mind watching a movie that has a 15 meter tall Gorilla in it at all.

Many years ago I used to work at a theatre and even though it was a small place we had giant docking bay doors in the back so we could load the sets for plays. So I guess they could have squeezed Kong thru one of those. But what I want to know is...when they were bringing Kong to the theatre, how did they get him thru the steets of NY without anyone seeing him? Oh well ...it's still a great movie..even with a few plot holes

I am pretty sure RKO had the Hippodrome Theatre in mind when they wanted to show KingKong chained up in a theatre after all the hippodrome stage was 200 ft long and 110 ft deep. As far as how tall the Hippodrome was that I am not sure seen KingKong was 50 ft tall. It is intersting to note that RKO owned the hippodrome theaetre 1925-1929. Also famous Magican and EscapeArtist Harry Houdini made an Elephant vannish in the Hippodrome Theatre.

For you people cultured enough to consider "King Kong" a horror film, here's a special treat: anaglyphic photos of a cast of the original stegosaurus model's head.

To view this in 3D, just put on your trusty red and blue 3D glasses, with the red lens over the left eye!

Hi Filmmaker2 nice pics and yes I consider myself some what a fan of Kingkong and I might know a thing or two about Kong.

Speaking of Kingkong I have been wondering if KingKong might get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame when the movie opens in december the new remake. I think just the fact that Peter Jackson who is the current best movie director in the world lends weight to Kong getting a Star seen that Jackson is directing the movie. Not to mention Jackson himself is a life long KingKong fan.
On the other hand one of the stipulations for getting a Star is that you have to have been in lots and lots of movies. This would make Kong getting a star just about impossible because he is only in a handful of movies. Also fictional movie characters dont get Stars unless they have met all requirements and Mickey Mouse and Godzilla seem to have the requirements. Right now the deck is stacked against Kong getting a Star.

Hi Barbra I am very well aware of the 1976 movie APE however that movie is not about KingKong. I was posting all the titles of movies that had KingKong in them not a Kong like monster. If you noticed I did not post the movie Son of Kong or Mighty Joe Young either or the MJY remake or the Korean movie in 1967 Wangmagwi kind of like kong but with a horn on his head or Konga 1962.

I would like to see "APE," but then again I like bad movies.

The stegosaurus head you see in the photos is a copy off the original Delgado puppet. The mold was taken off of it (supposedly by Jim Danforth, so I heard) in the late 60's. As you know, Delgado's puppets have mostly deteriorated over the years. The original stegosaurus puppet's skin is pretty much gone now, so it's very nice that this copy was made, to preserve it for future film fans.

As I recal Mighty Peking Man a.k.a. APE here in the USA was made in Korea in 1976. Other Korean Giant monster movies include Pulgasari 1985 filmed in North Korea and Wangmagwi a Kong like monster with a horn on its head made in 1967 the same year another famous Korean monster movie was made Yongary Monster from the deep. In 1999 an adaptation of Yongary was made titled Yonggary 2001 a.k.a. Yonggary vs. Cyker.

Those two are different films, although I have only seen "Mighty Peking Man" (it's terrible, and a lot of fun).

"A*P*E" (as its title was featured on some posters) was made in 1976 in 3-D, and was filmed in Korea. It features an ape-versus-shark fight scene, and a painting of this scene actually graced the cover of Famous Monsters magazine long long ago (see image!).

In a later issue in the "Letters" column, an angry reader criticized FM for using the "rediculouse" painting featuring "a shark with an ape riding on the back of it."

"Mighty Peking Man" was made in Hong Kong in 1977...

Lets not forget Toho studios 1955 classic Half Human the story of the Abominable Snowman. This movie seemed to have a KingKong feel to it. Of course if there were any type of giant hairy monsters that were probley more impressive than Kingkong it would have to be imo the movie Sanda Tai Gaira a.k.a. War of the Gargantuas 1966. This movie is also the sequel to Frankenstein vs. Baragon 1965 a.k.a. Frankenstien Conquers The World.

I've never seen "Half Human." I would love to, though. I hear it's pretty neat.

I liked both "Frankenstein Conquers the World" and "War of the Gargantuas." Great stuff when I was a tyke.

I think I was 9 years old when I first saw War of the Gargantuas at the drive in back in 1970. I saw it again at a theatre double billing with MonsterZero. I think Ishiro Honda directed Half Human in 1955. I think when Ishiro Honda was asked if he would direct Godzilla Raids Again in 1955 he said no because he already said yes to directing Half Human. Honda did give Motoyoshi Oda the director who directed Godzilla Raids Again some advice. I think any horror movie fan today who grew up watching horror movies at the drive in when they were young were very lucky in seen some of the best horror movies fans regaurd as being true classic today. I feel kind of sad for those who can only watch those classics on dvd or vhs an not know the feeling of going to a drive in to watch a movie. Ahh the good ole days

I totally miss going to drive-in theatres! There are still a few of them around here and there, but it's not like it used to be. There was a special feeling to the drive-ins.

For those who can't get to a drive-in, the Something Weird DVDs often have drive-in shorts and trailers, popcorn and candy ads, and so on, which evoke the experience. Those things are great to watch nowadays.
