Because he is inherently evil and an inner force drives him to kill off his family. That, and the fact to set up that he is insane. Carpenter didn't decide Curtis would be his younger sister until the sequel.

Females are usually always the killer's protagonist at the end of the movie and survive. This is because the killer is usually male and females help portray the underdog, weak person that overcomes the Goliath killer in the end.

I have seen them and read books but it still doesnt make sense.
Like in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre the evil family are quite extreme victims of capitalism because of the slaughterhouse closing down.
As well Zombie films are all attacks on consumerism
Think it was Dawn of the Dead where Zombies try to kill people inside a shopping mall.
Its that sort of thinking im having trouble with.
Sure Micheal Myers can be insane for the sake of the film but what caused it.Whats Carpenter trying to say?

Okay, this is petty crap, but his named is spelled MichAEl. My name is Michael, so perhaps I'm too sensitive to catch that mistake. ;)

Carpenter didn't have some great deep meaning. In all the interviews I've seen with him, he stated he just decided to make a movie about the "boogie man" trying to kill the baby-sitter. He didn't even come up with the fact they'd be related until he wrote the sequel.

I think you're looking for something deeply hidden that is not there.

Well, perhaps it is supply and demand. Most of my black friends aren't in to horror movies for some reason. Most of my friends that love horror movies are all white. Perhaps the black race generally doesn't support horror movies financially by going to the theater, so many writers don't write characters to appeal to black people.

That, or it could be the fact most people making horror movies, and most movies, are white people and they tend to identify with white characters and tend to write movies with characters they are familiar with.

Man I am too damn sober to get in a deep mood to come up with better arguments. Perhaps when I'm wasted Saturday night I'll give these questions another stab. lol

Abby (Exorcist ripoff, hard to find)
Blacula (the sequel, Scream Blacula Scream features Pam Grier.)
The Zombies of Sugar Hill (great, sort of a zombie Koffy ripoff)

the film I Walked With a Zombie has a lot of not-so-subtle anti-slavery subtext.

oh, and Bouncer, the reason Ben dies in NIght of The Living Dead is because Romero wanted to say something about the state of Civil Rights in the country at the time. Black people were struggling very hard to achieve equality, and it seemed like no matter what they did, they kept getting "shot down"(pun intended).Even to have a black lead at all which, aside from Sydney Poiter in "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" was unheard of, was very groundbreaking in its own right.
And as for the feminist undertones, I have a feeling most of the films have less to do with feminism, and more to do with the fact that a whole lot less people wanna see a hot teenage boy bein chased around by a knife wielding maniac. Regardless of how much "integrity" some of these movies pretend to have, the bottom line is money. And studio execs know that hot teenage girl being chased is gonna rake in the green.
