The UN is calling it the "biggest disaster EVER"
Last I heard, the bodycount was at 26,000 and climbing, throughout India, Thailand and Sri Lanka.
Families torn from eachother by the raging water, tens of thousands killed (and I don't think they've even found half the bodies yet), and literally millions left homeless, in countries that are already poor, and heavily relied upon tourism to make a living.
This is very bad for these countries, and could be the beggining of a downward spiral if they do not receive the help they are in need of.
I actually have a friend in Sri Lanka, and it's so messed up over there that I haven't been able to find out much, at this point, I can only hope that they're ok.
Anyway, just thought I'd do my bit...there's a few charity organisations over HERE working to send what releif they can.
I'm sure there's some operating everywhere...
So, folks...whether or not you have friends or family from any of the effected areas, or hey, even if you've at some point just enjoyed a thai or indian curry, or enjoyed a holiday under the excellent hospitality they offer in these countries....if you can throw a few bucks over their way, I'm sure that even though you'll never get the personal thanks you deserve - you'd be helping someone who's just lived through worse than most of us will (hopefully) ever have to.
I'M POSTING THIS HERE AND IN "EVENTS & HAPPENINGS", as I want everyone to see it.
Apologies if you've read it twice because of this.

So, how did they come up with the "worst disaster ever" bit? Is that determined solely on bodycount, or?

Very descent of you to post this Cheeba.
I work for a large company that looks after IT systems and applications for the business in these countries, and therefore we are contacted pretty much by every country that was affected by the Tsunami on a daily basis.
They have been pretty quiet the last few days as I am sure that they have bigger more important things to worry about.
Me and a few workmates donated some money this evening. Hope it will help.

I find it incomprehensible that so many [ over 40,000 so far ] could die at one time like that. And about half of them are children.
I shall be donating what ever I can.

Yeah this really sucks. There is this one video they kept showing on CNN of people trying to grab onto something and being literally washed away with the current...I mean it looks as if the people are going to die. The footage was quite disturbing. Hoping they were able to get out.

just a part of life.. if theyre not washed away by a tsunami, killed by earthquakes, their starving, dieing of aids.. etc etc..

That a bunch of pilgrims bathing in the sea were killed kind of shows up ALL the religious/God stuff for what it is.
Anyway.....It's a truly terrible event and the scale is quite frankly tragedy off the scale.
But it's Mother Earth. It does what it does.
It was throwing up all kinds of things that we call 'natural disasters' millions of years before we were around to be affected by them.
People live on coastal areas, on tiny islands 3 foot above sea level and so on....
And as such things like this will happen because it's what the Earth does. It always has and it always will.
And in the end one of the things it does will hurt us.
It's how this World works. It's a massive tragedy, but it's the price we pay the living on Earth in general and for living in certain areas of it.
Don't forget you Americans...one day the San Francisco earthquake to end all earthquakes will happen.
We know, we live with such things, we make the choice.
It's what happens when Man lives in all areas of the World.
There's no one to be angry at (unless you beleive in a God....you can be angry at one of them) it's just they way our Planet is.

I dont understand why they have to continue showing video of dead bodies and people being washed away on the news.
Its just like 9/11 when they had all the pictures of people jumping.
This is a very bad timne for them. My family is donating some money...every little bit helps I suppose.

Im not cheeba for starters.
Im Anna "Spallalala". But since cheeba can't seem to sign out I can't get in arrghh.
I just wanted to post this once in here because we have a friend over in Sri Lanka. I spoke with her a few weeks back and we were planning her return. I dont know if she is ok. And it really sucks not knowing.
The last update I heard it was at 80,000 plus now. And it could double by the weekend.
I have noticed that every year around this time something happens. Last year wasn't it fires, or was that the year before. I dunno too wasted to really know.
And yeah orangestar, I do agree with what your saying. I mean theres usually kids watching and they dont need to see that kinda stuff, its messing with the childs emotions. Even if they have to see it at some point in there life, they dont need to see it on repeat.
And well I dont belive in god. I know someone is here with us. As to why all of this destruction and sorrow, well maybe there is a purpose.
I will be back under Spallalala again once i figure out how to get back haha.
Also, I reckon everyone here should go and donate some money to all of this. Cheeba and I are doing so today.

yeah it really sucks! I'll definitely throw some money into the relief effort. unfortunately people's curosity can lead to bad results. in a tsunami, the water gets sucked back into the ocean so lots of people often wonder onto the now dry land to see what's happening, and that's when most of the havoc begins.

The only somewhat negative thing I can say is.....It's funny how if the US steps in to take out a terrorist threat (such as Iraq) we are shunned as a whole and the world hates us, yet if a Tsunami wipes out a lot of people, then all of a sudden, Hey! We're the good guys! Send help, send money, Be humanitarians! How cool is that?

I have always been afraid of something like that happening here. I live on the West Coast and they predict that it will happen like that here some time in the near future. It happened once in the 1700's and it was pretty bad. I dunno. Natural disasters happen for a reason but they frighten the hell out of me. When I was looking at all the pictures last night, all I could do was cry. So many children. One third of the death toll was little kids. That kills me. Now the death toll is over 70,000 and they expect it to double. Ugh. Horrible.

Natural disasters happen for a reason
No they don't. That's the point.
Forget all your Human reasoning. It's the Earth.
It has NOTHING to do with Man.
It's being doing things like this for millions of years and we just happen to be in the way now.
Forget all this very Human. clutching at some kind of logic, reasoning.
There was no 'reason' for it, there was no stopping it, nothing and nobody could have changed anything and if mankind had not been here it would have happened anyway (as it has been since the World existed).
This is an act of Nature. Man and his bullshit hang-ups, Gods and 'there has to be an answer' thinking is of no importance or validity.

...And it's those bodies that are gonna start causing problems before long. Personally, I still don't think they've found more than 3/5 of the bodies yet anyway...
Some are saying that the headcount that starvation, and carrion related disease will take out could well be more than the initial drowning/battering deaths (and then there's more bodies...etc...etc), think about it, THAT many dead bodies...there's not enough people to (for lack of a better way to put this) clean it up quickly enough...and then there's the whole water contamination issue, there was a lot of filthy water in these countries, it's now allover the place...
They'll be very lucky if the initial disaster turns out to be the worst of what has happened.

I'm assuming the animals is something they had the good taste to leave out.
There's a LOT of dogs in sri-lanka and india, both pets and street dogs...heaps of wildlife overall in all of the countries.
It's a shame, some would've known something was up and would have escaped, but I'm certain a fair few of those would've been victims also - the bodycount is probably up there with the humans when you think about it...
I just hope they manage to contain the potential disease and infections that will become a problem otherwise.
