I haven't seen Ringu but I have seen The Ring. The Ring was not scary at all. That's just my opinion though. I didn't vote but I will once I see Ringu. By the way is Ringu the exact, and I mean exact, same as The Ring like it has the same people and all that except it's in japenese? Just curious.

I much prefer the orginal Japanese version - it blows the Hollywood remake out of the water.

But for those of you who like your horror movies with blood, gore special effects and action, you probably won't like it.

However, if like me you like psychological 'ghost' stories then this is for. Don't be put off by the subtitles - you get used to them.

You all know the story line but the original plays more on Japanese mythology. It is fantastically shot and directed with suspense building up all through it. Just when you thought it was over, there is a truly terrifying scene which, whilst not making my hair stand on end , did make my skin crawl.

Since watching the film I haven't developed phobias about phones or TVs, or been kept awake at night, but the film stands out vividly in my memory still and that one scene still gives me the creeps just thinking about it. Most terrifying movie I've ever watched? Possibly.

Tip: watch it on your own, at night.

I liked Ringu better simply because there were fewer plot holes. I'm sure we will see similar posts to this whey the "Eye" remake comes out.

If you don't reading and watching Ringu is, far scarier.
The Ring is good but Ringu is I think a classic

I just watched Ringu last night and I thought it was better than it's American counterpart. Of course alot of the creepy scenes lost their effect due to the fact I had already seen a version of them. The story seemed to be a little more complete and left fewer questions than did the American version.

opinions?

Before I start - I really hated the american verison of the film... (I wached Ringu first.)

Then to the point...

I think The Ring is to much effects and Too much Over-explanation... It seems they always have to fing some explanation to the problems. In Ringu, even though You do not have a lot of questions when the movie is over, it hasn't solved anything! :)

Another thing is that I feel that The Ring has combined features from both Ringu and Dark Waters, wich makes it very confusing! I do not think that the water on the floor has anything at all to do in the movie (Given that it is a Telepathic Killer... OK, it is a well in the story, but the well is just a toomb, nothing more.)

Lastly, I will never be able to understand why every kid in an american movie have to know everything!!! In Ringu the kid is just a kid :)

To sum up.

I am the proud owner of Ringu, as well as Ringu 0 and Ringu 2. When it comes to tThe Ring, I do not think I would bring it home unless someone paid me to take it off their hands... :S

Anyway, this is just my opinion, and luckyly tastes are wildely diffrent in the world.

Okay, here is where you all get to hate me....

I found Ringu boring. The lack of effects hurt it. I thought the story in the ring was much more engagin and entertaining, and the bigger budget and effects made the scares more effective.

The "oo, im scared" looks on everyone's faces in Ringu were laughable, wheras the distorted faces in ring were diturbing.

I thought ringu was good for a modern japanese movie, but i have never been a big fan of theirs. Most anime movies are difficult to follow, or lack an actual plot all together, which was my #1 exposure to japanese movies for a long time.

I haven't seen Ringu and I'm not sure I ever will, but I know I wasn't too impressed with The Ring. I didn't think it was horrible, but it wasn't really scary. The ending sucked. And yeah, whoever said that thing about the know-it-all kids... I agree. I mean, I know kids are more sensitive to extrasensory stuff like that, but most six-year-olds don't know how to be crypitic like that kid.

I felt the same way with The Sixth Sense, too. I just wasn't impressed.

i too finally saw ringu last night. i liked it. the one thing i never understood was the scene on the video where it showed the men crawling and it looked like they were being whiped. does any one know whats up with that? the scene i really enjoyed was when the lady was in the well and she found the courpse (sorry, i am bad with japensse names) she snuggled the courpses close to her neck after we saw the flesh peel away and the eyes ozze from the sockets. i thought it was a very morbid yet sweet scene. i am a really fan of that kind of stuff.

The Ring was better visually (the dead people's faces, effects, I'd even give the cinematogrophy the edge over Ringu), but Ringu is better in the narritive sense
