There are all types of stereotypes/categories like Punk, Emo, Goth, Nerd/Geek, Druggy/Alcoholic, Jock, Raver, etc. I can't list them all.

I am a combination of a lot of things: My music taste is punk and electronica...but I'm also a jock, which is a weird combination. I also masturbate to Tom & Jerry cartoons, but I don't know what that would fit under.

So, what do you consider yourself to be?

i also wonder what EMO is?

anyway...my wife calls me a geek, so i guess thats it. i collect comics, star wars stuff, i love to watch cartoons, but only the old ones like the old disney cartoons or looney toons or charlie brown. i am a big fan of the lates 80s/early 90s heavy metal scene and i used to buy everything i saw which had the KISS logo stamped on it.

i also love to read novels...horror, fantasy and westerns mostly. i read star wars novels, conan, stephen king, dean koontz, bentley little, and any books about vampires, zombies and werewolves i find.

Yup, I agree with your wife.

lol.

No seriously, I don't exactly know what emo is...but I was trying to explain it in a different thread (which prompted me to make this thread...I was hoping an authentic emo could explain it).

But, anyway...this is what I was saying:

"I think everybody has a different opinion on what emo is. But emo is just a genre of punk music. I belive it is short for emotional.

So basically, it's bands that may sound like hardcore punk...but then ruin it by singing about how sad they are because their girlfriend left them."

Today what passes as emo is mostly bullshit, its not what emo was or what the name came from. But yes it is short for emotional. and to picture an "emo kid" picture your alterna hipster for the 00's. tight pants trendy hat style of the season and tight shirts preferably thrift store, black rim glasses (though these are used all over the place) and shaggy hair must be black.

Now I fall in to that category of style of dress (minus the hat) But I'm punk/hardcore skate/snowboard guy with geek streaks since being geeky pays my bills.

I hate myself for not having the willpower to resist this thread and what I'm about to say:

A brief synopsis of the history of "emo":
1. Spirit Assembly releases their first Lp in 1993, regarded by many to be the first "emo" record.
2. Most people begin referring to discordant hardcore with odd time signatures as "emo". This includes such famous DC faves as Fugazi, Hoover, and a veritable slew of other screamy bands. It's important to note that, at this point, "emo" was not a negative term. It was an emerging term to describe a type of music that was evolving out of punk and hardcore. It had absolutely nothing to do with crybabies, crying, sweaters, thick black glasses, or any of the other, now trite, stereotypes of what "emo" is.
3. Once the term got around a good bit, a LOT of people who were loosely associated with the indie music scene (i.e. fans of bands like Sunny Day Real Estate) began misusing the term, mainly because they saw some singer-dude cry on stage and thought "this must be that new "emo" thing everybody is talkin about!"

This is, by a LARGE margin, a brief synopsis of the word "emo." Basically, it's a term that was misused by a lot of people who didn't know what they were talking about and eventually it got into Spin magazine to describe some shitbag band like Taking Back Sunday or, as mentioned before, Sunny Day Real Estate. The word has had a LONG and sordid history, one that aging folks who grew up in the punk scene (such as myself) have had a hard time reconciling. Like many words, it's relative. To some, "emo" would be crybaby bands, but to some others who were involved back then, true "emo" is a brand of punk/hardcore typified by Spirit Assembly and any band released on Ebullition records in the early/mid 90s.

I honestly hate this word more than anything that has ever been leaked to the media from the music scene. And I also hate that I couldn't hold myself back from writing this post.

And I also HATE it when people label themselves or others, pigeonholing them into some bullshit genre or stereotype of person. Human beings cannot be thought of that way. I know most of you know that obvious fact, but maybe some people don't (hint hint).

That's a pretty good site. I wish you hadn't posted this while I was writing my post, then I wouldn't have had to. It's interesting that this person considers Moss Icon to be the first "emo" band. Like I said, the history of the word is extremely based on hearsay and speculation, and is the source of, as I'm sure you know, some volatile sentiments amongst some circles.

for one thing .. if you have something to say - say it. This is a forum for that very reason.

I debate this topic with friends constantly ... its interesting - especially if you are older and have seen the music genres splinter into a million different divisions the way it has since the 60's. Music has always had a very strong impact on many aspects of youth culture - fashion being the most visible.

In the 60's you had rock - (which was broken into psychedelic, country-rock, pop, and a few other styles), there was country and western, there was jazz, blues, and a few other dominant genres.
I know i've left out or forgotten a number more, but nothing like there is today ..
There is at least 10, probably a lot more, different distinct types of metal alone. And goth has split into a ton of different types ...
Names of styles withing the genres I never knew existed.

With most of these genres come a distinct style of fashion.
From before i was born, certain bands have tried to develope a look as individualistic as their music. Something they could be identified with. The Beatles is an early obvious example.
And since there was popular music, the kids/fans have always wanted to emulate the dress of those bands as a way to identify with them. This is where many - if not most - of the fashion trends come from. (i'm talking youth fashion here - not Milan runway fashion - although the music fashions will often influence haute-couture)

So - you will see kids pigionhole themselves as this or that. Its unfair to dismiss someone for labelling those that desperately wish to be labelled. (unless they dont know what the hell they are talking about - like most old people who havent been paying attention to anything for the last 40 years and still think all kids are hippies)

So many followers of certain types of music have to dress an exact way to the point where it becomes a uniform. There was a specific punk look, a specific goth look, grunge, ska, you name it.
What bristled me was twofold ... people dressing goofy to say that they were being individualistic .. when they were actually trying desperately hard to look just like everyone else in their circle, and the ones that say they dont like to be labelled - when they are trying desperately hard to look just like everyone else in their circle.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with expressing yourself (or more to the point - expressing someone else) just dont get all defensive and sensitive if someone referes to your look as 'goth' if you are running around in the middle of summer dressed like draculas bride.
Most of the outragious fashions are done to get a rise out of the old folks anyway .. and if you kids think you're the first ones to do it .. guess again - your folks did it to your grand parents, and so on. Its a natural progression of developement .. growth through rebellion.
It kills me when i'm walking in a mall and a couple of kids in foot high blue and pink mohawks strut around looking at people daring them to get a reaction.
Most people (in Toronto anyway) are so used to it that no one cares ... I laugh at the attitude myself - not the fashion.

i guess in summary i'm saying - what the hell, if it feels good, do it.
but dont get all uppity when someone calls your spade a spade ...
After all they are just aknowledging that you achieved exactly what you set out to do.

me - i've worn converse sneakers, blue jeans, and tshirts ever since i was 5. My influence was practicality. I dont think about what i'm wearing .. i just grab the 1st thing off the pile.
Probably because my musical tastes were so diverse that i couldnt possibly dress like my influences without developing a serious multiple personality disorder or becoming incredibly broke.

Now, why would anyone want to 'Categorize' themselves?

What I wear on the outside is an expression of who and what I am on the inside...I would NEVER want to be 'trendy' and I haven't a clue what the word 'fashion' means (which is obvious to anyone who knows me)...If I like something, I'll wear it, if I don't, I won't, no matter what anyone/everyone else is or isn't wearing...

@Urge...I'm basically a jeans and T-shirt person as well, mine just tend to be black because that's the color that I like the most...Just as you may choose to wear blue more than another color...I wear my 'accessories' just as someone else may wear jewelry...It's just something that I like, it doesn't matter to me if anyone else likes it...I dress for myself, and ONLY myself...

Ive been called Goth, Vampire, Witch, Freak, Crazy, Devil Worshipper, Scary, even BIKER (if you can believe that), and some not so nice things, as well...But, I am just ME. I dont fit into any box. The only thing close to a label that I will accept is 'different'...

I suppose that I can accept 'Scorpio' as a label, its pretty much the only thing that really suits me, although I have to admit 'vampire' comes close for many reasons, but probably none of the reasons you may think...Mostly just because I am pale, I have pointy teeth, I'm a night person, and I avoid the sun like the plague, simply because it doesn't agree with me, NOT because I am trying to BE a vampire...It burns my skin, makes me swell, blister and peel, it also hurts my eyes, which gives me headaches, and I simply have no energy in the daytime, it really feels like the sun drains me...I'm really hyper at night, though...People also call me a vampire when I tell them how old I am, and anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I really haven't changed much since I was 20...I still dress, act, speak, think, feel and sound the same way as I always have...Of course I don't LOOK exactly the same, but pretty damned close...People who haven't seen me in YEARS, always say, "Wow, you haven't changed at all"...Well, they probably wouldn't say that NOW with my hair all cut off and dyed black, but always before...Yeah, I'm pretty boring...

nicely said i've been called a bunch of dumb shit too for the way i dress i've had people call me a fag just because i have long hair. and everybody that does that kinda shit is justa asshole that needs to stop and think about how stupid it is to judge somebody by what they wear or how they wear their hair or anything else.

urgeok:

I'll agree with you on several points (the most of anyone so far). I agree that people dress a certain way to portray a certain image. But it doesn't stop there. Since we're talking about music, I will be the first to admit that at one time I listened to music that I honestly didn't like too much, just because it was the cool thing to be listening to. So yes, I think people do pigeonhole themselves and project themselves onto stereotypes. Life imitates art (I think).

What I don't agree with is that you seem to be saying that this makes it ok for us to categorize people. That, since they want to be thought of in a certain way, it's ok to do it. I think a good example of this would be a conversation a friend of mine and I had. He's the manager of a record store in a semi-ghetto area of Dallas. He was talking about how much he hates it that, when he sees a young black dude come in with baggy clothes and some sort of headband, that he thinks they are a drug dealer/"gangsta" and are going to steal something... so he watches them. Now, this young person might be trying to portray that EXACT image, one of a lawless drug dealer/gangster, but it's just morally not right to assume that about him.

Everyone judges everyone else, and if you say you don't, you're lying. Most people I know judge people based on their taste, or lack thereof, in the arts (music especially, but books and film and other stuff too). And since we have established that music often has a heavy influence on fashion, we can assume that most people I know judge others based merely on what they are wearing... and what that says about what they are into.

Im naturally like 85% traditional "Prep". Im a cheerleader, hang out with the popular kids, get good grades, date a varsity basketball player, wear a lot of American Eagle, listen to Justin Timberlake and Ashlee Simpson, talk about makeup, boys, hair and celebrities.

The other 15% is punk/emo-kid. I LOVE Sublime, Dashboard Confessional, and Jack Johnson. I wish I could pull off wearing a plaid skirt with hooker boots. Im a loner at times.

One thing I hate is Goth kids who think that they are original in some way. Goth is not original if you shop at Hot Topic.

And Good Charloote sucks. But one of my goth friends loved them before they came out with their shitty pop songs so she's okay. She's only cool because she dressed all in black back in the 6th grade days when people really thought she was a vampire.

I could go on with this subject for hours.

* 8 large baking potatoes, peeled and quartered
* 2 teaspoons butter, divided
* 1/2 cup milk, or as needed
* salt and pepper to taste
* 1 1/2 pounds beef sausage
* 1/2 cup diced onion
* 1 (.75 ounce) package dry brown gravy mix
* 1 cup water, or as needed

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place potatoes in a saucepan with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain, and mash with 1 teaspoon of butter, and enough milk to reach your desired creaminess. Continue mashing, or beat with an electric mixer, until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until heated through. Remove from pan, and set aside. Add remaining teaspoon of butter to the skillet, and fry the onions over medium heat until tender. Mix gravy mix and water as directed on the package, and add to the skillet with the onions. Simmer, stirring constantly, to form a thick gravy.
3. Pour half of the gravy into a square casserole dish so that is coats the bottom. Place sausages in a layer over the gravy (you can butterfly the sausages if you wish). Pour remaining gravy over them, then top with mashed potatoes.
4. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until potatoes are evenly brown.

One thing I hate is Goth kids who think that they are original in some way. Goth is not original if you shop at Hot Topic.

Yea no shit, Goth outerwear for all the rich kids who want to pretend that they have problems. I never knew what the fuck 'Hot Topic' was until I saw somebody mention it here and went to their website. A little pricey if you ask me, no thanks I will continue to shop at the thrift store and army surplus.

Here is something that drives me fucking nuts, before I had kids I had a 79 HD lowrider, no Jesse James special, just a beat up old chopper.

I went to Bikeweek in Daytona one year and couldnt believe the amount of morons running around on brand new bikes with leather chaps and everything else leather. Also every piece of leather clothing had HD emblems on it. Now I dont know if anyone on here rides, but HD apparel is not fucking cheap.

Me with my Wrangler jeans, cheap work boots, and one off biker shirt, I sometimes felt like I didnt fit in even with that crowd. Everyone trying to be the outlaw biker on the weekend and then going back to their cushy deskjob come mon. morning.

Thats why I say Enigma, just dont fit any category.

And since we have established that music often has a heavy influence on fashion, we can assume that most people I know judge others based merely on what they are wearing... and what that says about what they are into.

hey there ....

i was really keeping my views on the fashion = music level ..
There is an established 'hip-hop' look that has changed and evolved as much as the lingo.
The gangsta thing in your example is more of a racial stereotype.

I dont think its cool to catagorize people in a way that is demeaning but it is a pretty clear indication of what that persons influences are ..musically.

I certainly wasnt equating my views with that of some old fart that sees someone dressed 'punk' and figures them for some squeegie kid..who'd b & e their house at the 1st chance.

I usually assume they are in bands .. to take that much trouble with the obviously premeditated fashion statement.
(the more outrageous looks pretty much guarantee that the person isnt into a mainstream line of business.).

I was once myself called a yuppie by my dads old girlfriend ...
(because i had more than one VCR !!!) I just laughed :)

I work in IT .. i'm not a nerd but people used to use that label for the field before everyone and their brother owned a computer.

Again .. i think my initial post was pretty clear that i view the 'pigeonholing' as nothing more than a recognition of the attempt to identify on a musical basis.

I cant honestly think of any identifiable youth fashion that isnt directly inspired from music ...

there may well be, i just dont know them.....

See, that's another reason I prefer dogs, they won't hold a grudge more than a few minutes unless they've been abused or something...dogs RULE.

So, this is how it went down...I picked dusk up (the black psycho cat), and when I sat down with him, he hissed at me...so I'm like "fuck this" and I hissed back at him, to see if he liked it...
Evidently, he didn't.
See that's where things got fucked up, I guess he took it as a threat cos he kinda hissed/spat and took a swipe, it happened so fast I didn't even think he got me at all - I'd tried to avoid it, so what was even worse than that, was in doing so, I smacked the back of my freakin head into a wall...I stood up then, kinda booted the cat in the ass before he bolted, and saw my nose...the sonofabitch only got me with one claw, but this deep channel right across my nose.

Well, if you notice...most people on here -- and most people in life -- don't pigeonhole themselves. Almost everyone is a combination of traits which span many different "categories" established by society.

All I'm saying is that just because the question was posed...doesn't mean that we are categorizing ourselves into one specific stereotype.

Some people DO readily admit that they are part of a particular group, where others realize that they cannot be categorized.

The loophole is that child pornography has a very clear definition, it is when the genitalia of said child are clearly and deliberately shown, or the child is performing sexual acts. Text shows nothing, and the literature in question actually isn't any kind of porn. It's like the difference between reading the Anarchist Cookbook and actually doing stuff from it.

I hate the world today
You're so good to me
I know, but I can't change
Tried to tell you, but you look at me like maybe
I'm an angel underneath
Innocent and sweet

Yesterday I cried
You must have been relieved
To see the softer side
I can understand how you'd be so confused
I don't envy you

I'm a little bit of everything
All rolled into one

I'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your health, I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
You know you wouldn't want it any other way

So take me as I am
This may mean you'll have to be a stronger man
Rest assured that when I start to make you nervous
And I'm going to extremes
Tomorrow I will change
And today won't mean a thing

Just when you think you've got me figured out
The season's already changing
I think it's cool you do what you do
And don't try to save me

I'm a bitch, I'm a tease
I'm a goddess on my knees
When you hurt, when you suffer
I'm your angel undercover
I've been numbed, I'm revived
Can't say I'm not alive

You know I wouldn't want it any other way

i never really fit into one category or another ..
and its been a bit of a dilema ... not so much now as it was when i was a teen because most teens naturally feel an inherent need to belong to one group or another - something they can identify and derive support from while they are developing emotionally.

I was always into team sports, and pretty decent at them .... but i didnt like jocks. Couldnt relate to muscleheads on any level other than the love of playing the game.
I was always into art .. spent a lot of time in the class (discovering my limitations unfortunately) but i found most of the art-posers to be just as imbalanced as the jocks.
I enjoyed a party but wasnt a drunk .. i mostly saw them as a way to meet girls ..(but as i never approached any i wasnt too successful unless they approached me :)
So i wasnt a partier .. didnt do drugs, drank occasionally ...
Lots of people i knew were heads but i wasnt.
I was always a smart kid .. could hold my own on any subject - pretty decent iq (for what thats worth) but i didnt like the pseudo-intellectuals.

I tried to get along with everyone but i had no qualms about telling someone they were an asshole, be it the captain of the football team, or the most popular princess in the school.

Since i was having problems at home it would have been nice to have had a 'support group' like the ones above but it never felt natural for me to limit myself to one kind of friendship over another.

So it was weird ... weirder still when my friends all did get together because it was a very diverse group.

I was going to say that things are easier now that i'm older but its not. Upon reflection i realize that adults do the same thing .. there are still noticable divisions. Usually based on the social stratus. What do you do for a living, how much money do you make, do you have kids, do you act your age.

I'm 43 but i find that i dont have much in common with most of the people my age. I wanted a house so i am forced to live in suburbia. I care about the future of my family so i'm forced to work in some soul sucking job for finantial stability.
I am surrounded by people who watch survivor and friends at night and make homophobic and racist jokes.

The friends i value most are my more 'bohemian' friends who generally live downtown and are either writers or musicians.
Although i can meet them on many levels I myself cannot play an instrument so that important connection is missing.

I do all the work around the house myself .. i'm handy. On the surface i look like a normal responsible suburban dad but i have artistic leanings (just no talent)

I have a few obsessions that people my age generally dont hav .. music/movies/literature.
I love to collect things .. especially movie related toys .. i love pop culture. Most of my peers could give 2 shits for these things.
Their goals are to have the best SUV/plasma screen/lawn on the street.
(a plasma screen for watching friends .. and occasionally Top Gun)

I guess in summary i really dont fit into any niche and although it looks tempting at times, its not a natural thing for me to do.
(this is why many people turn to religion by the way)
I dont believe in that either.

So - i still enjoy my sports, my music/movies/literature, my tinkering around the house .. but most of all, my immediate family which would be my wife and 4 year old son.

We are probably going to be known as the family that doesnt fit in ..but as far as we are concerned - if it works for us, we're into it .. if not .. then dont expect us to do it just because its the social norm.

wow, i feel like i just took my pants off in public ..
back to work.

I don't fit into any category either.

61 years old--most of my friends and quasi-contemporaries are in their 30's and 40's.

I don't seem to have any of the interests of people my age--Cannot imagine myself driving a motorhome cross country--had much rather tour on a motorcycle.

Work with people trying to learn to live clean and sober without alcohol or drugs--I'm a recovering addict--clean and sober for 14 years this month.

Most of the people I work with are HIV positive--I'm negative.

I have two surviving family members--a 94 year old uncle by marriage and a half-brother. Uncle is still able to walk around--but his mind is shot.

I suppose I should mention that I am homosexual--so is my half brother--but he and I have very little in common--and we both live in the same town.

I seem to get along with straight folks--I have more straight fiends than gay ones.

I hate most sports--unless I can participitate--such as rollerblading--which i still do.

I learned to turn on the computer at the library about 1 1/2 years ago--then I built one up from a dead one--learned to use it--and here I am.

I have a BBA, and I am an electrician--most addicts have more careers than most people have jobs.

And I really miss hearing from you guys when I don't have time to sign on for a few days--which is now.

If I don't get to say so again have HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Wow! I can't believe I just read that whole thing.

by the way...put your pants back on! No wonder you're not accepted by your peers! Ya can't just get naked at a moment's notice! It's just weird.

Ok, but looks like jaun here has got you beat, urge. I mean, he pulled his pants down...then proceeded to rub his ass all up and down the carpet.

Oh, and happy holidays to you too, Juan.

Good game. (regarding being sober).

And my eye color changes with which ever pair of contacts I pick up in the morning--including Wolf Eyes and Alien Eyes.
