Woonsocket Man Indicted In Deaths Of Three Women

Providence, Rhode Island -- A Woonsocket man accused of killing three women and discarding their remains in commercial trash bins was indicted Friday on murder charges, the attorney general's office announced.

Jeffrey S. Mailhot, 34, was charged with three counts of murder in the deaths of Stacie Goulet, Christine Dumont, and Audrey Harris. The indictment also charged him with one count of assault with intent to commit murder and one count of felony assault.

Mailhot is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 5 in Providence Superior Court.

The indictment was handed up by a Providence County grand jury, five months after it was given the case.

"I don't feel any kind of relief in any way. I know justice will prevail, (but) it will take some time," said Dumont's sister, Madeline Desrochers. She added her sister's 43rd birthday would have been on Sunday.

"It's no comfort knowing (Mailhot) can wake up every day, he can eat, be among people, open his eyes and look at the sky, while my sister is still in some landfill somewhere," Desrochers told The Associated Press.

Mailhot was arrested in July on two unrelated assault charges for allegedly trying to choke two women this year. Police said those cases were the break they needed to connect Mailhot with the deaths of Goulet, Dumont and Harris, all of whom were believed to have been involved with drugs or prostitution.

Mailhot has been held at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston since his arrest.

Police have said Mailhot knew the women. They believe the women each went willingly to Mailhot's house, where he allegedly killed and dismembered them, then sealed the remains in trash bags and dumped them in commercial bins around town.

Goulet, 25 and a mother of two, disappeared from a local park after a fireworks display on July 3. Dumont, 42, was last seen leaving a friend's car on April 23. Harris, 35, vanished on Feb. 9, 2003 after telling her mother in a telephone call she would visit her that day.

Police recovered Goulet's remains at a Johnston landfill. The other women's remains have not been located.
